Coby J100u Quantum Fx J100u Boom Box Review

Coby J100u Quantum Fx J100u Boom Box

(More customer reviews)
Prior to purchasing this radio, I searched and searched for a detailed review of it, but found none. I basically bought the thing without an inkling of what to expect. But the mystery is over.

Now, on to the review...

The Quantum FX J-100U is one beastly looking blaster. It's huge...much bigger and heavier than I expected. It measures a whopping 17.5"W x 14"H x 6"D, easily dwarfing a GE Superadio III. It weighs slightly over 10 lbs without batteries. Much of its weight comes from its mostly wooden cabinet. There is a thick vinyl strap mounted on the top, which acts as the carry handle. The front of the radio is plastic as is the 6 "D" cell battery compartment mounted within the rear wooden panel. The radio also operates on AC, with a detachable AC cord, which plugs into the back of the radio to the right of the battery compartment. To the left of the battery compartment, there are two unused holes marked "PHONES" and "DC 9V IN". The actual headphone jack is mounted on the front of the radio. Inside the battery compartment appears to be a switch for 110/220v. It was set on 110v and I have not checked to see if the switch is functional.

Here's a rundown of the radio's features:
AM/FM/SW1/SW2
Cassette Player/Recorder
Built-in Microphone
USB/SD input
3 Band Equalizer 100Hz/1KHz/10KHz
Dual Rotating Telescoping Antennas

Here are a few other specs worth mentioning from the instruction sheet:
Max current consumption: 38mA
Max power consumption: 16W
Speaker: 30W 4 ohm 6.5 inch
Output power: 8W

But that's just about where it's impressiveness ends. Most noticeably, on the front of the radio there is what appears to be a huge 10" woofer thanks to the exaggerated speaker grille. In reality, the speaker is only 6.5". Printed around the perimeter of the speaker grille, in bold red lettering, are the words "THE ERUMPET OF THE BIG POWER/GOOD QUALITY SPEAKER/BASS REFLEX SYSTEM". I'm still puzzled as to what an "ERUMPET" is. And speaking of speakers, there are what appear to be 3 other smaller speakers, one on each top corner and one in the bottom left corner. Well, sorry to break the news, they are all fakes. The top two were easy to spot as fakes. But the lower one was less obvious due to the really nice metal speaker grille covering it. Simply by holding one's ear in front of it and not hearing any sound coming out of it was the giveaway. But also the specs in the instruction sheet only lists one speaker. By the way, the two metal looking guard bars running down each side of the front panel are plastic.

The radio has a 4-band tuner with the following frequency range for each band:
AM: 530 - 1600 KHz
FM: 88 - 108 MHz
SW1: 3.6 - 8.5 MHz
SW2: 8.5 - 22 MHz
The band is selected by a 4-position slide switch, which has a good feel to it, not too hard to slide and not too easy either. The tuner itself is another story. For one, it's almost impossible to see where dial pointer is, in part because it is recessed so far behind the tuner window, the pointer is not brightly colored, and while the tuner display itself is large, the area where the dial pointer is visible is very narrow. Secondly, the tuner tunes backwards. That is, normally when you have a slide scale tuner, the frequencies increase as you move from left to right. On this radio, the frequencies decrease moving from left to right. Though there's nothing functionally wrong with that, it is a bit disconcerting when you're used to tuning it one way all your life. Strangely, on the tuner display, they printed the words "NEW DESIGN" on it. I wonder if they're referring to the backwards tuning? Overall, AM/FM reception seems to be average, nothing exceptional. I do need to extend the dual telescoping antennas in order to get some FM stations without interference. I was able to pull in a few shortwave broadcasts, namely Radio Taiwan International and China Radio International, though the signals were prone to fading and there was a lot of hissing and whistling.

The cassette player/recorder pretty much does what its supposed to, no surprises. It has your standard functions: Record, Play, FF, REW, Stop/Eject, Pause. Does anyone still even use cassettes anymore? Anyhow, I would say it plays better than it records. It can record directly from the radio, USB/SD input, or through the built-in microphone. The built-in microphone is not very sensitive. Speaking in a normal voice, it worked best when I spoke directly in front of it. From about two feet away, it barely picked me up and from about three feet away it didn't pick up anything. And keep in mind, the player and recorder is mono only. Don't expect to be making high quality studio recordings with this.

While everything else about this radio is pretty much old school, it is updated with USB and SD card inputs mounted on the top of the radio. Through these inputs, you can playback music in digital formats. Though the box states MP3 player, the instruction sheet gives no details as to what formats are supported. The player is very basic, as it plays the files sequentially from the root directory of your USB drive or SD card. There are four function buttons that let you play/pause, repeat, go back to previous song, or skip to next song. There is no display to show artist, title, track, etc. There is only an LED indicator that lights up when you're in USB mode. While I first tried playing MP3 files just to make sure it worked, I then added some WMA files and was surprised that they also played. Pushing my luck, I then figured I'd try to see if it can play WAV files too. No dice. Oh well, two out of three ain't bad.

There are a few other things that need to be mentioned. It has a 3-band equalizer that allows you to adjust the bass, midrange, and treble. This is done through three rotary controls on the front panel. There are no position markers on the knobs so you have to guess what level you set them at unless you turn them all the way to the right or left. While you do hear changes in the sound by adjusting these knobs, there still seems to be something lacking in the sound. For example, even with the bass turned all the way up, it still sounds lacking in bass. Even with the treble turned all the way up, it still sounds lacking in treble. Maybe if they put in a real tweeter instead of that fake one it would sound better. It may make an interesting project for me someday to see if I can put one in myself.

The volume control is also very disappointing, as it goes from no volume to very loud in a very small increment. Maybe this radio was meant to be played loudly, but there should still be a better range of control. I have not tested to see exactly how loud it can go without distortion since I live in a condo and doing so would probably prompt the neighbors to call the police, but it does seem like this thing can go very loud.

Warranty? What warranty? There is no warranty mentioned whatsoever in the instruction sheet or on the box. Nor is there any manufacturer address or phone #. If you buy this thing, you're on your own.

Ending on a positive note, at least the headphone jack, while not being stereo, outputs to both the right and left sides when you plug in stereo headphones.

Bottom line, it looks impressive and has many features but doesn't do any of it exceptionally well. It puts out loud volume but the sound isn't as rich as you'd hope. The wooden cabinet is nice but the phony speakers are cheesy. I still like the way it looks though.

JBL OnTour Portable Music Box Review

JBL OnTour Portable Music Box

Impressive sound compared to other portables.I have a set of Wharfedale Loudman's used for 2 years. They're good value for the $40 I paid, but the "On Tour" has much more "depth"The sound is pure, rich, "on" I've listened to some of the more expensive portable alternatives and didn't think they beat the LoudMan's so didn't buy.Took a chance on these based on a review and the brand name.Doesn't have boom box volume, won't blow you out of the room, but there's plenty of volume without setting on max.And even on max setting, there's no sense that you're on the edge of distortion.

They're heavier than I expected, just less than 14 oz, exceptionally well made, sized more like a hip flask than the 'glasses' case described in one review. This isn't for your pocket, but OK for a brief case or tucked in the corner of a suitcase.I use mine in small group meetings and on travel.

The folks who designed this created a winner.

Product Description:
Share your music while on the road with the Harman JBL on Tour portable speaker system, which features an integrated protective cover that slides open to reveal a pair of full-range speakers. The slightly curved chassis measures 7 by 1.4 by 3.5 inches (W x H x D) when closed. When open, the cover shifts focus to serve as a stand, pointing the speakers upward to produce optimal sound on a flat surface. The system is compatible with most portable audio players thanks to its stereo mini-jack connection, which hooks up to such devices as the iPod, iPod mini, and a variety of other MP3 players, CD players, desktop computers, and laptops. The JBL on Tour is also easy to control, with a touch volume pad that both manages the volume and mutes the sound when desired. The speakers also remember the previous volume setting once the system shuts down.
Unlike many portable speaker systems, the JBL on Tour prides itself on its steady bass and clear, accurate audio. The device employs Harman's digital amplifier technology and Odyssey aluminum-domed transducers to deliver a full, rich frequency response that extends from low bass notes to high-end tones. In addition, the system uses computer-optimized equalization to improve the soundstage and an advanced energy management system that keeps the unit from wasting battery power during use. Additional features include gripping rubber feet below the speakers, an audio input cable, and a universal AC adapter. When used as a portable system, the JBL on Tour provides more than 24 hours of continuous play on four AAA batteries. The device also includes a low battery alert.

Average Reviews:

I did not purchase this from Amazon, but I wanted to write a review anyway.I have been looking everywhere for a stereo system that has clear sound, great bass, an iPod hookup and cd changer. If it had a cassette deck, that would be even better, but I could deal without one.I really liked the idea of an extra subwoofer.I wasn't going to purchase this system because it only has a 1 disc tray for cd's, but I figured that's where the iPod comes in for continuous music, and I should at least try it.Needless to say, I bought this stereo and hooked it up immediately (set up was a piece of cake).

I was immediately disappointed when the wires for my speakers were extremely short.Maybe only about 3 1/2 feet long.I like to spread out my system a little so I can get the best sound. Now, I'm not talking about placing speakers all around the room - they wouldn't even extend to the edges of my entertainment center.

The worst part of all, and the main reason why I am returning this system, is the sound is muffled.Even when I changed the preset EQ settings, the only one I was somewhat happy with was the "MP3 SURROUND"... but it still muffled my music.I could barely hear "s" sounds in the vocals... when I could, they sounded more like an "f".I should say, I am also very picky when it comes to electronics, but when I'm spending $200 + dollars, I think it's allowed! All I am asking for is crisp sound.

So, here are my pros to the system:
--Very nice looking stereo system
--DSGX feature really boosts the sound, along with the subwoofer
--LOVE the included iPod dock, which also charges
--7 different EQ settings for sound (my old stereo had 4)
--530 watts for loud sound

My cons, which severely outweigh the pros for me:
--Muffled sound.Vocals and music bits are not clear at ALL
--1 CD playing capability
--Wires and chords aren't long enough to spread out components to my liking
--Expensive for the things it is lacking

Hopefully this review will be helpful - I wish I had one that was this detailed when I was looking.Mind you, everyone has their own taste.

I would not recommend this system to anyone who is looking for crisp, clear sound. But if you like a nice strong bass and a lot of power... you may want to take a look.

Emerson iTone Portable Sound System for iPod (Black) Review

Emerson iTone Portable Sound System for iPod
Average Reviews:

I bought this as a low cost alternative to some of the other iPod clock radios out there and returned the first one because I was getting the same loud hissing out of the speakers like previous consumers have stated. When I exchanged it for another one, I got the same hissing.I tried multiple cradle adaptors and was about to return it again when I pulled the iPod up very slightly from the docking station.Once I did this it was crystal clear.Turns out the docking station plug is taller than most other iPod charger docks and puching it too far will create the interference.

Sorry for being long winded, but long story short, now that I have it figured out, the sound is fine and for a workplace music player this is just the thing I was looking for.Knowing what I know now about, I would recommend it.

Atlantis Multi-Media System & Video Output for iPod - SF-1001 Review

Atlantis Multi-Media System & Video Output for iPod - SF-1001
Average Reviews:

I have tried the Altec Lansing iM600 firewire charging AND usb docking station, only to find out that my ipod touch 2nd generation does not work properly in it.I was very bummed out, as I had already had to return 2 other ipod docking stations!I found out that the iPod touch 2nd gen. is pretty much too new of a product for most of the current docking stations out there.Very few will actually charge the iPod touch 2 gen, and neither will this model.BUT,this was not my reason for purchasing the Atlantis. The Altec Lansing sounded pretty great, but was much more money and did not work for my iPod.I bought this at Sam's club for $29,so I don't know why it is listed on here for $169......but WOW it is a great deal for the price. The remote control is great, it has pretty powerful sound for a small boombox. It does not have a rechargeable battery in it, but I will rarely take it with me anywhere. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS
1. GREAT VALUE!!
2. GREAT SOUND,NO CRACKLING, FOR A SMALL SPEAKER IT PUTS OUT SOME GOOD SOUND.
3.SOUND FILLS MY KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM.
4. REMOTE CONTROL IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND CONTROLS THE IPOD SONGS TOO
5. CAN PLUG IN USB OR SD CARD INTO PORT AND WILL PLAY MP3'S AS WELL
6. ALARM WILL TURN ON WITH IPOD AND SOUND STARTS GRADUALLY WHEN ALARM GOES OFF, SO YOU ARE NOT JOLTED OUT OF BED WITH A LOUD SOUND SUDDENLY
7. VOLUME WILL DEFINITELY GO REALLY LOW TO SILENT IF YOU WANT SO THAT YOU CAN FALL ASLEEP---ALSO HAS SLEEP MODE IF YOU LIKE TO FALL ASLEEP TO MUSIC SOFTLY

CONS
1. TAKES BATTERIES IF NOT PLUGGED IN.DOES NOT HAVE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK
2. MAY NOT SOUND AS GOOD AS A BOSE OR HIGHER END MODEL, BUT DEFINITELY SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE IHOME CLOCK MODELS, AND AS GOOD AS MOST $150 MODELS.
3. IF YOU LIKE TO BLAST YOUR MUSIC, THIS MAY NOT HAVE THE GREAT SPEAKER QUALITY TO DO SO WITHOUT BLOWING THE SPEAKERS, BUT IF YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO LOUD OR MODERATELY LOUD MUSIC THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT.
4. WILL NOT CHARGE IPOD TOUCH 2ND GEN ON THIS MODEL

I COULD PROBABLY LIST MANY MORE PROS!!!BEST $29 I SPENT

Executive Docking Station for Sportster Replay Review

Executive Docking Station for Sportster Replay
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
And here's why:

Got this thing to use with a Sportster.

My wife and I have been trying to get this thing working - meaning, positioning the antenna - for the last 2 hours. It would go to 3 bars for a second, then down to none - in the same place. It would receive ok in the exact MIDDLE of the room - held up in the air - but not in the window... It would work when hand-held, but not when in the EXACT location placed on a book or something, would not work.

It didn't work right in front of a window, but would suddenly spring to life in a position which made no sense - such as when I was standing in a ridiculous pose (making fun of the unit) and pointing it right at the ceiling.

It did receive fine.... out front of the house. I'm not drilling holes for a 50' extension antenna...

So as we were exasperated and a bit stunned at what seemed to be not-ready-for-primetime technology, I decided to try something....

I took the receiver that came with the Sportster... plugged it into the Sportster unit, and plugged that into the Docking Station... instantly, 3 bars. I moved all around the room and the least I got was 2; I covered it with my body, though, and that stopped the reception. But that makes sense, unlike the laughable and erratic performance of the Directed base unit.

So, it comes down to the antenna. Frankly, if the quality of the antenna is this poor, it doesn't say much for the base unit as a whole.

1 star because without the antenna, there is no reason to own it!

And guess what? Here's a bonus critique: the display on the base unit stopped working correctly >>three minutes<< after powering it up for the first time.

It's junk as far as I'm concerned, and based on the quality of the antenna that came with the Sirius unit I'll buy another one of those and look for another in-home solution.

Yes, maybe I got a bum unit. But I doubt it...

Audiovox SIR-PNP3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver

I love the SIR-PNP3 so much that I immediately bought a second one. And then a third one, two months later! The PNP3 is the 3rd generation of this Audiovox Sirius "shuttle" receiver, and SIRIUS and Audiovox have hit a grand slam home run with the PNP3. The display on the PNP3 is the brightest and clearest of any SIRIUS (or XM receiver) that I've seen. I haven't listened to AM or FM at all since I started my SIRIUS subscription.I use the Audiovox SIR-PNP3 both in the car and the home. The wireless FM transmitter is of high quality and mighty:You can set up the PNP3 in one room, and simultaneously listen to SIRIUS through any and all of your FM radio receivers located in nearby rooms, (at broadcast distances of upwards of 100 feet in my experience.) And, if you are someone who doesn't yet know much about satellite radio:SIRIUS is better than XM: Absolutely True!

Product Description:
Designed for use in the car, through your home stereo, and even in Audiovox's compatible boombox, the SIR-PNP3 Sirius plug-and-play tuner receives more than 120 streaming satellite radio stations, including stations with commercial-free music, talk, sports, and children's programming. Listeners will need an Audiovox home or car kit to use the tuner, but once equipped, they can transfer the tuner between the house and the car stereo as often as they like, negating the need to buy second and third receivers. The tuner is remarkably easy to use, with a large 2.5-by-1.38-inch amber backlit LCD screen that displays the artist info, song title, category, and time, along with a 0-9 number pad and a wireless remote that allow for direct channel access. Users can manually adjust the contrast and dimming level for better viewing, or they can set the display to Auto Dimmer so that it instinctively adjusts to the ambient light level. The receiver also includes a built-in FM transmitter that broadcasts satellite tunes through any FM radio--a bonus for people whose car stereos don't come with auxiliary inputs. Otherwise, most users will choose to connect the tuner (via one of the Audiovox kits) to a stereo's RCA jacks or 3.5 mm auxiliary input for better audio performance.
The SIR-PNP3 is equipped with a number of convenient user options. Most listeners will appreciate the 30 presets in three separate banks (A, B, and C), along with the preset scan function, which browses among the preset channels rather than perusing the entire station catalog. In addition, the receiver includes a preset list mode that displays the preset channels either one at a time or six at a time, with listings by channel name, artist, or song title. To save time, listeners can also directly access Sirius channels by their three-digit channel numbers rather than paging through the channel directory. Additional features include a Look Ahead function, which checks the current playlist of other channels without leaving your current station; an S-seek function that searches the Sirius signal for songs or artists that match your pre-determined favorites; and several time-based options, including an alarm clock, a sleep mode, and a program alert that automatically activates the radio and turns it to a specific program at a preset time.
The tuner measures 4.5 by 3 by 1.5 inches (W x H x D) and carries a one-year warranty on parts and labor. Listeners will need to purchase a compatible car kit, home kit, or boombox along with a subscription to Sirius to enjoy satellite radio programming through the tuner.

GPX CDPM5004 Portable CD/MP3 Player with Anti-Skip Protection Review

GPX CDPM5004 Portable CD/MP3 Player with Anti-Skip Protection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This CD Player has almost everything you could need, Bass Boost, fourty-five second anti-skip on cds, one hundred second on MP3 (which is really cool because it actually stops moving the CD, but still plays the music [it memorizes the songs for two minutes, and then memorizes the next two almost unnoticably] during those two minutes) In the month that I've had it the only time it's skipped is when the batteries run low, and I think that the anti-skip (with the stopping of the cd) with the MP3's actually adds to battery life.

Product Description:
The GPX CDPM5004 personal CD player gives listeners access to both their CD and MP3 catalogs in an affordable, lightweight package. The device is compatible with CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, but also plays compressed MP3 files when loaded on a CD-R disc, making it a far more affordable alternative to Flash memory MP3 players. And as a further incentive to digital music fans, it's also quite eye-catching, with a half-moon-shaped window that reveals the spinning CD inside. Active listeners who plan to take the CD player jogging or on bumpy car trips will welcome the anti-skip protection (ASP), which stores the music data for a set time to safeguard against interruptions from jostling. The ASP runs for 120 seconds for MP3 files and 45 seconds when playing CDs.
Ultimately, however, it's the music that makes the machine, and the CDPM5004 delivers on this count, too, with a bass boost system that fills out the lower frequencies to create an impressive overall sound. Other features include 64-track programming, a two-line LCD display, random and repeat play, directory select, CD intro, song skip/search, and a low battery indicator. The device runs on two AA batteries (not included) and comeswith stereo headphones and a belt clip for portable use. It also carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

Sony LBT LCD77Di Shelf Stereo System (Black) Review

Sony LBT LCD77Di Shelf Stereo System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My AWIA tanked a while back, and I was forced to get a new unit. AWIA was gonna be a tough act to follow. I'm not someone paid or 'encouraged' to write this either.

This is a pretty good unit. I hope it gives me lots of good years of service. It has a good, rich sound that fills my living room nicely. I have high ceilings and wood floors and the sound is good, not 'tinny' or high pitched. iPod, USB, aux. inputs are great. I like the audio controls O.K. but still want more than 3 layers/bands of an equalizer....The video screen is cool. GREAT picture. But it really has no appreciable function. Unless your in a dorm room maybe, but most folks probably have a laptop that has a much bigger picture anyway. It woud make for a decent digital picture frame, but it's still kinda small for that, and since it's sitting on a shelf or cabinet it's probably not gonna be in a great position to watch. At least that's how it is in my home. Still the picture is Very good.

SONY. All the bells and whistles on the unit, and no RDS?!?! (Radio Disply System) like on my cars radio?? How come that's not on here?? And why not a HD reciever? Those 2 things would have put this unit at 6 stars for me! And why not an option for some decent screen savers while the radio is on? If it's gonna have a screen saver, and the potential for great pictures! How come those LAME images? Since we can't play/see anything else while the radio is playing!

Forgive my whining...Those are just my ideas for improvements. For the money though, this is a good unit. It seems difficult to find a decent stereo these days, and this one fits the bill fairly nicely. Hope this helps. I'm satisfied. Oh and by the way. The distributor, and UPS got this there to me before the scheduled delivery date, and at Christmas Time!

WiFi Internet Radio Review

WiFi Internet Radio
Average Reviews:

The radio pictured for this listing is a Sangean WFR-1 internet radio - but the description is of a lesser-quality Sangean WFR-20. You really can't be sure of what you'll get since the listing is titled "WiFi Internet Radio".... Someone from Amazon should clear up the confusion here... I wouldn't buy until this is clarified...

Addendum - I called Amazon and they said they would correct the listingASAP. I'd still be wary...

Addendum #2 - Amazon has indeed changed the image to the correct one for this item.

Pll Digital Tuning Am/fm Pocket Radio and Alarm Clock with Built-in Hi-fi Speakers Review

Pll Digital Tuning Am/fm Pocket Radio and Alarm Clock with Built-in Hi-fi Speakers
Average Reviews:

This is a good item if you are just interested in listing to the radio(talk shows ,baseball game and music). Channels are grounded and precise. The speaker sound is very clear, with adjustable sound volume. No need to use the headphones unless you want privacy.
Far superior to the JWIN JX-M3; I have both.
I'm just not sure what X is for in X-BBS, or the D is for in D-BBS or what the difference is between the JWIN JXM20ORG and this JWIN radio. They look exactly the same, but have a big price difference.

This CD player was a gift for my child. She really liked it and liked the headphones that were included. They were very comfortable unlike products with earbuds. The website needs to include the headphones in the description.I couldn't find any reference to them and took a chance that this CD player would come with them.

RCA RP5012 16MB Digital Voice Recorder Review

RCA RP5012 16MB Digital Voice Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Saw one of these being used at one of those ponderous all-day tech training sessions.Instead of scribbling notes, the guy using it was able to sit back and listen and comprehend, and worry about notes later. He let us play with it, and the sound quality was coherent, which was all we needed. This is not a hi-fi device. The other reviewer complained about a buzziness...we didn't hear any. We've bought our own since then, and love it.More solidly built than comparably priced Sony's.Recording can be switched between dictation and conference.Maybe the other reviewer didn't read the instructions and play with the settings options? And the externally attachable microphone will improve recording sound quality even more.Plus you can playback via the headphone jack, or even pipe the audio into your computer so that you can save the audio.Does what it says, and does it well.I've since bought two as gifts.

Altec Lansing iMX2 Portable Speaker System for XM2go Review

Altec Lansing iMX2 Portable Speaker System for XM2go
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Had problem with unit w/in 3 mos of purchase. Was finally able to make contact with company after several WEEKS of trying. Even their customer support line disconnects you when you try to keep holding and don't leave a message. And when you leave a message, it must be deleted, because they don't return calls.

Product was replaced w/ refurb unit missing parts. Now I can't get ANYONE!

Altec Lansing is a poster child for extremely poor customer service. They have your money, and you have, well, a product with their name on it, for as long as it works. Had I known this prior to purchase, I wouldn't have purchased. It's that simple.
