GPX Portable CD+G Karaoke with Dual Mic Jacks - Blue (J108BL) Review

GPX Portable CD+G Karaoke with Dual Mic Jacks - Blue (J108BL)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This small karaoke machine has good features, some of which are as follows:

Cd+G, CD, and CD-R player, Auto Voice Control, omni-directional mic, dual speakers with full-range sound, video output, RCA stereo output (can be connected to a TV to view CD&G lyrics, dual mic inputs for duet singing, master volume, mic volume, Auto Voice Control with optional echo effect, a 2-digit LED display, an included audio/video cable, AC/DC dual power (either plug it in or use eight "C" batteries). The unit has a convenient handle on top to make it easy to carry around.

What I like most about this machine is its light weight and very good full-range sound quality. The funny thing is that I've never used it for karaoke.I needed a small "jam box" with a CD player for a very important task I needed to perform back in '07.Let me tell you, the echo effect is outstanding when you speak into the microphone.Maybe some day I'll use it for karaoke or somebody else can use it.I can't sing too well.

All in all, a good product.

Sony CFD-G500 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox (Black) Review

Sony CFD-G500 CD Radio Cassette Recorder Boombox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This (the CFD-G500) is the successor to the Sony CFD-G70.I own both. The sound of the CFD-G500 has better definition (is cleaner), is louder, and even has cleaner bass than the CFD-G70.It easily provides music for a water aerobics class that takes place in a swimming pool that is the size of a tennis court. (In fact, before being a pool, it was a tennis court.)

I had worried that the G500's sound would suffer from lack of separate tweeters, which the G70 does have. Not to worry.I don't know how Sony did it.

The G500 also has some improvement in the user interface (compared to the G70):the volume control have moved from the top to the front and is colored silver rather than the same color as the box itself, and Line-In is on top rather than at the bottom of the front.

Note that as I write this, Amazon's link named "Technical Data" is inaccurate in at least the following.Takes 8 batteries, not 6:Weighs 18 lbs with batteries (15.5 lbs without), not "7.25 with batteries," and its size is substantially larger than 15.25 x 6.5 x 10 inches.

In summary, this is the best-sounding battery-powered boombox that I've ever heard, and I've heard many boomboxes in the last 30 years.

Product Description:
Sony's CFD-G500 CD/radio cassette recorder offers a compact chassis, several sound-enhancement options, and remote-control convenience--not to mention an aggressive, black-and-red power-drive design. Stereo 4-inch speakers are augmented by a third, 4-inch Power Drive Woofer, all driven by a powerful 20 watts RMS total. The unit's CD player uses a one-bit digital-to-analog audio converter with 8x oversampling for pristine sound, and audio CD-R/CD-RW compatibility means the boombox will play your home-brewed music mixes as well as prerecorded CDs.
The CFD-G500's digital AM/FM stereo tuner offers 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM). Four electronic sound modes (rock/pop/jazz/vocal) let you tailor the sound for listening to various different types of music or in different environments, while the unit's unique Power Drive settings (off, 1, and 2) enhance low-frequencies in any sound mode. A cool red light atop the device indicates PDW-on status.
A remote control with 10-key direct-access buttons works for CD tracks and radio presets, while various CD play modes (program/shuffle/repeat) let you hear tracks in multiple ways: in sequence (as recorded), in program order (up to 20 tracks), all tracks in random (shuffle) order, or as a single track repeating over and over.
With synchronized CD/cassette dubbing, CD playback commences just after cassette recording begins. The stereo record/playback cassette deck provides direct recording from either the tuner, the CD player. Meanwhile, an analog minijack (.125-inch) stereo line input lets you hookup anything from your laptop to an MP3 player or a portable DVD player. The unit runs on the supplied AC power cord or six D batteries. The remote uses 2 AA batteries (no batteries are included).
What's in the Box
Boombox, remote control, a user's manual, AC power cord.

Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PB10-CDR-RT Power Box Advanced Job Site Radio with CD Player and Remote Control Review

Factory-Reconditioned Bosch PB10-CDR-RT Power Box Advanced Job Site Radio with CD Player and Remote Control
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I saw this device on job-site not too long after it was released.I had to search around to find it, now it's for sale everywhere.
Pros:
-cage allows it to be chained down with ladders and job box.
-cord wrap keeps cable tidy when not in use.
-light weight.
-square shape lets you stack it on a two wheeler (unlike the DW & Mil).
-snap-down CD tray keeps discs from jamming if you tip it or crash into it with a skyjack.
-EQ was designed to be LOUD and fill a room with sound (see cons).
-on-board GFCI cleans up cable clutter.
-12v output and mini-jack input lets me tie in an i-pod or other gear.
-battery charger cabinet holds 8-9 CD jewel cases for safe transport!

CONS:
-EQ was not designed for the audiophile carpenter. If you want booming lows and tight high-end, buy a Bose Wave Radio and hope you don't trash it.
-no line out jack for sending to a transmitter or other device.
-FM reception is garbage, I use CDs and MP3s unless we are listening to AM.
-backlit display is not designed for viewing above horizontal. If you have the box setting on the ground, you must tip it back (or lay on the floor) to read the display. From above you see all possible icons.
-volume control doesn't give you much room for subtle music.I normally keep it on 1 or 2.Volume is electronic with a momentary up-down control via a shuttle knob (on the left)
-GFCI doors flip up, so you have to tip the unit to the side to see the plugs for mating.I just tore the doors off after a while.I figured, why have rain lids?I work indoors well after the job has been dry.
-all of the nooks and crannies on the molded case collect a LOT of dust and debris.

HINT!
The antenna is discretely hidden in the round top handle.I disassembled the unit, cut the antenna lead to the handle and soldered it to a retractable antenna (from my local RadioShack) that I attached easily to the top of the main shell.I do not reccomend this procedure, but I can tell you, it SIGNIFICANTLY increased my FM reception.

Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio (Black) Review

Sony ICF38 Portable AM/FM Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a big time radio guy, and have used many models over the years. There are two things that really make any radio stand out, and this one has both of them.
The ICF-38 is an excellent performer as far as reception of both AM and FM signals go.Weak signal pick up on both bands is markedly better here than with almost all small portable radios I've used, and even more importantly, selectivity (ability to seperate stations cleanly) is better as well. The tone switch (which some radios don't even have) cuts the treble when desired, if you want a less harsh sounding AM signal. The dial has no clock or light, but an LED for indicating if a station is tuned in.Battery life is excellent if alkalines are used (it takes 4 AA batteries).Output volume is listed as 4 watts, quite loud for a radio of this size, with little distortion at top level.
The other ingredient for a good radio is ease of use and a well thought out design. There are little things here which most people won't notice that actually make this radio a joy to use. Many radios today that run off both internal batteries and AC require a seperate wall-wart that plugs into the radio and the outlet, but the ICF-38 has the power cord built in so you won't have to search for it when needed. Also, the battery cover is hinged, which is great as battery covers can disappear as easily as wall-warts (and you can't just go to Wal-mart to buy a new battery cover). The carry handle flips up when needed, and there is an indentation in the cabinet which allows you to slip in a finger to raise it easily, and you'll find out how nice this is when your hands are full and you need to bring the radio with you as well. Both slide switches for band selection and power have a raised bump in the middle which makes it easier to change bands or turn it on.Finally, The shape makes it easy to place in most locations and it is very stable, making it unlikely to get knocked over.
If there were no markings on this radio to indicate the manufacturer, I would have easily guessed that it was a Sony product. It has the great performance and clever design that I associate with Sony.

Jensen CD-540 Portable Stereo Compact Disc Cassette Recorder with AM/FM Radio

The controls on this player looked flimsy and cheap right out of the box. The volume spinner was practically falling off. For the cassette player there is a separate button for stop and eject and they are on opposite sides. Counterintuitive to almost all other players out there.

And the cassette player chewed up a beloved tape the first time we used it. Worthless piece of junk!

Panasonic RX-D29 CD / Radio / Cassette Boombox with MP3 CD Playback Review

Panasonic RX-D29 CD / Radio / Cassette Boombox with MP3 CD Playback
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading the reviews that were already posted here, I purchased this item with great anticipation.I ended up returning it to Amazon.com within one week. The only thing I enjoyed was the cosmetic appearance and light weight for carrying.I was terribly disappointed in several important features. Most importantly, the sound quality was surprisingly poor.It only sounded reasonably good with the "sound virtualizer" turned on.The four preset equalizer options always worsened the sound. Classical instrumental music sounded okay, but music containing vocals had a serious balance problem; the vocals were too soft in contrast to the instruments and it was quite difficult to hear the lyrics clearly.I tested the same CDs on an older, much cheaper boombox and did not encounter the same problem. Many important features are only accessible from the remote control, so if the remote became damaged or lost, many of these functions would also be lost. The interface is not user-friendly or intuitive. For example, there is no general on/off or power button for turning on the CD player. You have to load a CD and then press play in order to "wake up" the boombox. Then, if you want to display the summarized track information or the total playing time, you have to STOP the CD while it is playing. You cannot use the search button to go backwards from the first track on a CD to the last one; I therefore could not access hidden bonus tracks on a collection of newly-released CDs that happen to have them hidden before the first track instead of after the final track. Most CD players have search buttons that do allow you to search backwards from the first track or forward from the last track to the first. Many of the other features on this box (including programming a desired sequence of tracks or accessing the radio presets) also require a bizarre set of steps using the remote control.I found myself having to refer repeatedly to the user manual, and it would've taken me a long time to memorize the steps. The designers should have put more control buttons right on the box and not just on the remote control. The display is small and poorly lit.The cassette player is also rather poorly made.I tried to listen to an audiobook and heard too much white noise when I set the volume high enough to comfortably hear the narrator (not very loud). The cassette player is only for "normal setting" tapes (not high position or metal). The radio had fair-to-poor reception despite the digital tuner. This boombox actually made me want to turn off my music or book, and that is why I decided to return it.

Product Description:
Whether you're after portability or simply a stereo system with a small footprint, Panasonic's RX-D29 CD/radio/cassette boombox is a worthy candidate. The system pumps 6 watts per channel through a pair of 2-way speakers, ,each of which uses a 3-inch woofer and a .5-inch tweeter. Enjoy your favorite tunes without interruption--you can play a CD at random, in a specified order, or repeat one song or the whole disc.
You can play your homemade MP3 music compilations, too. This unit is compatible with multi-session MP3 discs, but if there are a lot of sessions it will take more time for playback to commence. Albums and tracks will play in alphanumeric order, so number your files and folders to ensure a desired playback sequence. The boombox does not support MP3 song and album title display. If a CD-ROM-format CD contains MP3 and files other than MP3, only the MP3 files will be playable.
CD synchro start helps you record custom music mixes on cassette, and auto-scan tuning sets your presets for you (12 FM, 12 AM) when you power up for the first time. The unit even comes with a handy remote control to simplify operation from the comfort of your favorite listening position (remote requires 2 AA batteries, not included).
Full auto stop conserves batteries and cassette wear by shutting down when a tape reaches its end (or beginning, if you've just rewound), while CD cue and review controls help you zero in on just the section you're looking for.
Choose from 4 preset equalizer settings to tailor the sound to your preference (XBS bass boost, vocal, clear, or soft). A Sound Virtualizer circuit simulates surround sound from the boombox's 2 speakers. For MP3 listening, Panasonic's special Re-Master circuit reproduces the treble lost during MP3 compression, enabling reproduction close to the original.
The RX-D29 runs on either AC power (cord included) or 6 C-cell batteries (not included). Power backup using 3 AA batteries (not included) saves the current time, timer settings, and radio stations that you have set. If memory batteries are not used, memory items are erased if the unit loses power.
What's in the Box
Boombox, remote control, AC power cord, and a user's manual.

Jensen JISS-115 Portable CD Boombox with iPod Dock Review

Jensen JISS-115 Portable CD Boombox with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After reading the first review I was worried this would be a piece of junk.Ours has worked flawlessly so far.We bought this docking station as an xmas gift for my 8 y/o son and I have to say it is a great device. It is feature packed. It has just about everything you could want from a docking station/boom box combo. I particularly like the fact that it charges your ipod while it is docked and has an AUX input so I can play any device with a 3.5mm jack.We have owned two other docking stations including a Yamaha PDX-30...with no AUX jack :(... and an O'KESTRA Portable Surround Sound Speaker 360 Degree. We listened to numerous other docking stations before we made these purchases mainly at BB and the Apple store.I'm not an audiophile but I think this unit has rich, deep, clear, true audio sound. My much more expensive PDX-30 has much more bass but this blows the O'KESTRA out of the water in terms of fidelity and loudness. My daughter is jealous that this one has a digital tuner rather than the knob on hers which makes it easier to find a radio station. For the money you will not find a more feature packed device. As for the cons, If I could change one thing it would be the glossy finish.I think think it makes the device look cheap (I know, I know...it is cheap).I would be able to keep it in the kitchen for the world to see if it had a more classy matte finish.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PRODUCT!!!

Exceptionally loud sound output with very minimal distortion! It does have a couple flaws, though:

1. No full-blown tone controls or equalizer, has 3 or 4 tone "presets" (no "Rock" preset, oddly enough)

2. Ipod dock should be fully integrated into the unit, not just a cable attachment (for better portability).

3. It would be nice to see DVD media support for the CD drive, to allow for large capacity MP3 playback (don't want to risk my Ipod dangling from a cable connection in a portable situation).

I bought this from Target for $15.99 for my boys and they love it. The little figurines don't orignally come off the top, so we had to unscrew them, and pop them off. My boys really enjoy playing with this. So don't waste the money here, you can buy this from Toys R Us for $17.99. For that price it's a fun toy. It is a bit "cheap" feeling, but for that price, what do you expect.

Disney's Pirates Of The Caribbean CD Boombox
Average Reviews:

I bought this because I like Pirates Of The Caribbean stuff. This is a nice novelty item to have and will no doubt increase in value over time for collectors of such items.Having said that, I wish the storage compartments were a bit larger to be able to store CD's.The compartments aren't very deep so they won't hold much other than some coins or rings. It would have been even nicer if it was also a radio too. It's nothing great as a CD player is concerned, very basic. But this is a cool novelty item to have and I will enjoy showing it off to friends.

I give it 4 stars for being the unique item that it is.I would have given it 5 stars if it also had a built in AM/FM radio and larger storage capacity.

It also allows you to hook your MP3 player up via a port located in the front of the chest.I haven't tried this out yet, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

Wouldn't it have been extra cool to have provided a remote control shaped like Jack Sparrow's compass to go with it!

The newer version of this boombox is truly great. The sound is amazing and the actual quality of the boombox is much higher than the previous boombox without iphone capability that had pieces falling off of it.The previous boombox has stickers that provide the illusion of equalizer lines and other things such as the titles for the ports and things of that nature. The quality was so poor that it came out of the box with the stickers falling off. This machine is exactly the opposite and overall great. The only con is that as with the original boombox from the 80's it doesn't have all the knobs and setting changes to play with the sound and things but overall, great machine.

I have had good results in the past with iLive products but this is a dud. I purchased 2 for my kids to use as "speakers" in their rooms for their iPod Touch. The good part is that they fit nice and securely in the product. The bad.... STATIC.The radio was mediocre quality, but to be fair, it is an am/fm radio, not a stereo.I could have lived with everything except the static on the iPod "channel".The only way to reduce the static is to crank the volume. My son tried to listen to it at night, and when the volume is low, it is horrible reception.Even when the iPod is off, and the unit is powered on and set to "iPod" there is static. They are on there way back.I was hopeful that it would work well enough, but alas, static killed the purchase.I would look elsewhere. Both of the units I got created the same static problem...

Panasonic RP-HT21 Lightweight Headphones with XBS Port Review

If you want value for your money, if you lose your headphones too often, if you wear out the cord, or plug on your headphones, these are the ones to get.I have a couple of MP3 players I use at work daily and with them I wear my headphones constantly.I either lose or wear them out whether they are more expensive or cheaper.I was absolutely startled at the bass that came our of these phones. It is deep, rich and accurate.Overall sound is better than a pair I once had that cost me about 10 times as much.Knowing that I would either wear them out or lose them I bought 4 pairs this time.I will definitely buy more when the need arises. An excellent deal, I highly recommend these phones.

I attached at first just one of the speakers and I'll say at this price it definitely performs well enough. Nice BIG knobs. Easy to use. Lightweight enough to be portable. The manual is in mice print and the one online discusses a double deck and this is NO double deck. I wish companies gave a darn about how manuals are written but I guess they never will.
