Sirius SDST5V1 Starmate 5 Dock and Play Radio with PowerConnect Review

Sirius SDST5V1 Starmate 5 Dock and Play Radio with PowerConnect
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This little unit is a great item. I bought it for two reasons, first, it is plug-n-play, and second, it offers ala-carte selections.

What is ala-carte? For a cheaper monthly satellite bill, you can select up to 50 channels (minus the premium channels). I went for it, and actually struggled to find 50 channels I liked. Other channels such as Margaritaville are designated as premium, so they are a small add on cost. But all in all, expect to pay from 60% to 75% for the ala-carte cost than the full package.

Admittedly the ala-carte price has risen over the years, but its still cheaper than the full package.

I use this unit in 4 locations; which required the purchase of a couple of docking stations.

My boat. I have an Alpine iDA-x100 head unit with a compatible satellite interface so I can use this unit on the boat. Since the Starmate 5 is controlled by the head unit, the logical choice was to mount it inside a hanging locker in the rear cabin so it was out of the way. The unit hangs on the locker's wall; safe and secure. And the unit is locked onto the docking station. Depressing the docking station release, and the unit pops off.

My car. I also have a docking station in the car, so it can be plugged into the car's stereo system. You really need an upgraded stereo system for this, as an FM modulator is not a good alternative - regardless of whether you are trying to listen to an iPod, satellite receiver, or any other audio device. The idea is that the FM modulator will play through an unused FM channel. But as you travel along the highway, stations come and go, which constantly interfere with the "unused" channel.

Some FM setups are capable of disabling the antenna for the car stereo, and that is the only solution I see as working. However, even if such as setup is used, the audio quality is suspect. Therefore, I would recommend a "proper" configuration, meaning low level RCA inputs. This may mean replacing your stereo, or buying a 3rd party adapter designed for your factory radio.

Ironically, I already have a factory XM satellite receiver in my car, which I used for awhile. But for billing purposes, Sirius and XM are still considered separate companies, so you do not get a multi-unit discount if you have one Sirius and one XM unit.

And I have found that the car's XM receiver, due to the geosynchronous satellite orbits, is prone to dropouts when you do not have a clear sky, such as driving behind a hill, in a city with nearby large buildings, or even a tree-lined boulevard.

Consequently, Sirius uses 3 polar orbiting satellites, and one of them is always in the neighborhood, which results in fewer dropouts. You can still get a dropout or two with a Sirius system, for instance you are downtown with high buildings, you may lose signal. But it is much less of a problem than XM as one of the satellites is generally at a higher overhead angle.

Perhaps the most difficult decision in the car is where to mount the satellite unit. I use a RAM-Mount cup holder setup which works great. Since the use in the car is temporary (when the unit is not home or in the boat), I simply pop the mount in the cup holder and plug the wires in when needed. This also allows me to easily and quickly remove the system when I park the car so it is not tempting to thieves.

Fortunately, my car has a set of RCA level aux inputs - conveniently hidden in the arm rest, so I can connect the Starmate to those and the cables are not hardly noticeable. But since I remove the whole shebang when not being used, this is not an issue.

Installing the antenna and docking station in the car was not even as hard as installing a car stereo. You do need some basic skills, and may need to figure out how to remove a panel or two along the way. But it is not difficult.

My home. I also have a home docking station that I can use the Starmate to listen to satellite at home. I even bought the remote antenna setup to attach to my house exterior. You'll find that most houses have some trouble with the proper reception of the signal, and the best advice if you want a home system is to buy a external antenna.

All of these solutions require plug-n-play docking stations, which are also available from the manufacturer of the Starmate 5.

Finally, I also have a portable "boom-box" adapter for the Starmate 5.

The best attribute of this unit - other than the ala-carte feature - is that it is portable, and the station ID is part of the unit itself. And with plug-n-play, you can move the unit from docking station to docking station and have satellite in your home, car, and boat without having to pay for multiple receivers.

Pros: I like the controls, not hard to figure out.The sound is about as good as I expected, it sounds better when you are several feet away.
Cons: When you play a CD, each song is silent until two seconds in.It actually doesn't even show the zero or the one, it just starts at 00:02.This is extremely disappointing to me, and I'm going to return it.

Sony CFD-S03CP - Boombox - radio / CD / cassette Review

Sony CFD-S03CP - Boombox - radio / CD / cassette
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a half-decent boombox, especially if you buy it on special. It is relatively light & compact too.

I really like it that it can play CDs with MP3s on them (as well as regular audio CDs).When I need to get MP3 music off my harddrive, the best and most permanent way to store the tunes is onto CD-Rs.I can fit hundreds onto one disc.Like most CD players, it won't play DVDs with MP3s, it has to be on CDs. The menu system is basic, but it gets the job done well enough. You can do some basic searching and programming too.

The digital tuner reception is good.I am glad it catches AM.Many radios these days seem to be excluding AM for some reason.AM is full of goodies you'll never get on FM.You can store a few of your favourite stations with this unit. That's good.

THE SOUND QUALITY ISN'T TOO GOOD.I'd say it is fair.It is kinda tin-can like, even with the megabass feature on.That's too bad, but the sound is definitely clear and it can reach a high volume if you need it too.

I like it that it plays old-school cassettes.I still have plenty of those worth listening to once in a while. However, this is very basic cassette deck. The buttons and mechanism seems kinda cheap. There is no auto reverse and no counter. The digital display only says "TAPE" when you pop a cassette in.A counter comes in handy, especially since there is no "window" on the cassette door to help you see what's left on the cassette. And I miss auto reverse tape decks.Even my old cheapo walkman had auto reverse back in the day. I haven't had to "flip a tape over" in well over a decade.

I like it that the cassette deck can record. But, there is no mic on the unit or even a mic input. That's where all the fun is with these things.Recording onto tapes from a CD or the radio isn't really something people will use too often anymore.

Actually, recording radio shows/interviews might be useful, but what Sony should have done was allow us to record onto CD-Rs.That way we could copy our tapes to CD-Rs instead of CD-s to tape. Also, we could record radio shows and even our voices (with a built-in mic or mic input) into a digital format (like MP3s).

And of course, the mic input could also serve as an audio-in input for attaching an Mp3 player to the unit. You cannot attach an MP3 player to this at all.

But I guess Sony wanted to keep this unit basic and around $100 (although I bought min on special for well below that price).

Sony CMT-EH15 - Micro system - radio / CD / MP3 / cassette Review

Sony CMT-EH15 - Micro system - radio / CD / MP3 / cassette
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the Sony CMT-EH15 as a gift for my adult daughter to replace her very old Aiwa system. One of the major selling points was the fact that the Sony has a cassette deck.My daughter still has a good collection of cassettes and she does not see the need to replace all of them with CDs.She also doesn't want to buy an iPod and pay to download all of her old music. This is what most manufacturers would have you do if you look at any of the current bookshelf systems for sale.
She began a search on the internet and in local stores for a compact system that would fit in her limited space that had CD, cassette, and radio, of course. Most of the systems that fit her needs were either cheap "boombox" units or huge, coffee table sized systems. We came across this Sony system on several websites. We learned that this was built for the overseas market primarily since it will run on 110 or 220 volts and has the European FM tuner band settings.Several internet dealers only sell the 220 volt version and make you buy a transformer to convert it to be used in the US at 110 volts.
When the system arrived, we set it up in a matter of minutes. The first thing we found was that it has an option to set it to run on the US FM frequency band. You simply have to follow the instruction manual and press a couple of buttons while powering it up.Once you do that, it is set to the US standards for FM.
The radio reception on both AM and FM is very good. There are a lot of preset memories for stations. The cassette player and CD player work great. The cassette has a neat door covering the control buttons when not in use!
The sound is great for small areas, like her bedroom where she uses the stereo. If you're looking for ear-shattering, bass-thumping music, this is not the stereo for you.If you are looking for a great stereo for the bedroom, office, den, etc. this is perfect.
If you are not ready to throw away all your cassette tapes, you should definitely look into this Sony system. By the way, if you do want to listen to your iPod or other MP3 player, there is a front panel audio input. So you really can have everything in one package!

I really urge everyone to stay far away from this product if you value your cassettes. The one I purchased mangled the first cassette I put in (an irreplaceable one - how could I have been so silly as to put it in without testing the player?). In any case, this product really is a piece of junk. But then, you get what you pay for.

I spent a lot of time searching for some type of speakers that were not going to cost a lot for my daughters iPod Nano.I wanted to get something that would recharge the iPod while she was listening to it and something she could carry around.
The iMove comes with 8 adapters for most iPod's (4th Generation, iPod Photo, iPod w/Video, iPod mini, iPod nano). It did not come with an adapter for the new metal case iPod nano, but Memorex offers a free adapter if you call them at 1-800-321-6993.
The sound is descent and as good as anything I shopped for in the price range up to $120, has a digital display and comes with a radio which is nice as well.

Audiovox Sirius SUPH1 Dock & Play Home Kit (Black) Review

Audiovox Sirius SUPH1 Dock & Play Home Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this after signing up for Amazon Prime.Received it in two days at no extra charge.Hooked it up to my Onkyo receiver and ran the antenna cable outside...I had to drill a hole through the wall to get the cable outside, behind my components.I put twoscrews onto the outside edge of the overhang of the roof and mounted the antenna.Came inside, hooked up all the wires to the dock and plugged in my Sportster 4.

I got the full 3 bars of signal strength and am enjoying my Sirius Satelite Radio as I'm typing this review.I am trully happy with this purchase and it's about $10 cheaper than Circuit City or Best Buy.

So long as you mount the antenna as the directions state, I don't think anyone should have a problem with the reception. The instructions included show what direction the antenna should be pointing depending on what part of the country you live...also...the optimum position for the antenna is pointing straight up.

This product does exactly what I needed; a way to play my Iaudio7 through speakers. The sound quality is better than I expected, similar to higher quality powered PC speakers. The sound will fill a room, you do not have to hover around the speakers to hear. The bass response is what can be expected from smaller speakers, but better than I expected. The highs are crisp and clear. The included 120v power supply is great when there is access to an outlet.Or, use 6 AA batteries.

The listed product details on this device is limited and the dimensions are incorrect. The speakers are about 7.5 inches wide and about 4.5 inches tall when opened up.They fold up into a small cube thats about 4.5 x 4 x 2 inches - compact and an ingenious design.A carrying case is not included, so the power supply and the small clip that your audio device sits in must be carried around as well.Any audio device that accepts the small headphone jack can be used, you simply plug the speakers plug into your device as you would headphones. The only complaint is that the speakers are exposed and unprotected when opened up.OK- just have to be careful.I recommend this product.

Like some other reviews have pointed out this unit can fail suddenly. About about a month of use the speakers suddenly stopped working, no sound would come from a docked iPod or from the aux input port.

Audiovox SIR-BB3 Sirius Satellite Radio Boombox Review

Audiovox SIR-BB3 Sirius Satellite Radio Boombox
Average Reviews:

Here is the new and updated version of the SIR-BB2!Since they do not make the BB2 anymore, this is what you want if you have the PNP3 as it'll allow you to take the boombox anywhere!Note, the PNP2 and other Sirius receivers will not work with this, only the PNP3.

Improvements include a better and lounder volume so that if you're outside you'll hear the program much better! The volume is adjusted by either pushing a down or up button. Also it's not as "thick" as the BB2.

Plug in some D Cell batteries and you can go portable with it!

It includes an adapter to plug in, and 20 wire and antenna for reception.Note many with Sirius have to put the antenna just outside their window facing the appropriate direction (read directions). And everyone can get reception, it's just a matter of proper antenna placement.

You may want to look into getting the 50 foot Sirius antenna extension cable (see above for item information) to connect both antenna wire and boombox. You can connect up to 2 of them making a total of 125 feet of antenna wire.

And Sirius lineup, you'll never be able to find something you cannot listen to!And with Sirius you also can listen to Sirius online FREE when you signup!Sirius has 65 commercial free music channels, TWO NPR channels, Talk channels (Patriot, Right, Left, Air America, Talk Central, OutQ) and spanish along with Radio Classics (Lone Ranger, Suspense, Dragnet, etc.) and more! Exclusive include Howard Stern starting January 2006, Maxim Radio talk (Mens Magazine) channel, Eminem Shade 45 channel (uncut hip-hop), over 40 NBA games per week, NHL, Tony Hawks Domolition Radio, Barclays English League Soccer, All Division I Mens Basketball.

The trick to finding what's on and when is to look online at the channel lineup for times or listen to Sirius information channel 184 or better yet, stay tuned to the channel you like!

Sports, Sirius is the only one that has a 24/7 NFL channel that has each and every NFL game including your hometown broadcast feed!NASCAR will be exclusive to Sirius starting in 2007!

I challenge anyone to find this cheaper than Amazon with free shipping and no tax.It won't happen!

So there it is, if you want to use the PNP3 in the house, this is what you need!

I bought this to use with my ipod when I didnt want to use earbuds. It is my second one. I gave the 1st one (in black) to my husband. It has a really good sound for the price, is light weight and packs easily. I have not tried using batteries because I haven't needed to.I have not used the radio either but I didn't buy it for that.If you are looking for something inexpensive, small and moble with good sound quality toplay your ipod or iphone this is a great buy.I can turn it up pretty loud with no static or feedback from the speakers but if you are looking for something to blast everyone out at the beach, I suggest you keep looking.

Other than the false advertising issue, the product looks good and if it worked, I would probably like it.

Nice pop-up handle to carry it around, and your expensive and fragile iPod slips into a well protected socket (not sticking up like many models).

You can use batteries and take it along, or AC of course. It has some weight, like a comparable sized boom box, because it takes some decent sized speakers and magnets with an adequate power supply to give good bass at a reasoable price.

No probelms so far, after two weeks of use.

Sony ICFC180 AM/FM Clock Radio Review

Sony ICFC180 AM/FM Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I have been using the same clock radio for the past 20 years - It's a dual alarm Panasonic and it still works pretty well. Some of its features such as individual up/down alarm/time set for the minutes and hours are not even available on clocks today. And it has a 10 minute snooze - not nine minutes, another feature hard to find these days. But it's lacking in other areas such as no battery backup. So we decided to replace the old clock.

Some research was necessary. For the most part, only Timex, RCA and Sony have competitive products. My requirements were simple - AM/FM dual alarm, battery backup, 10 minute snooze, easy to read display, and not too bright. I did not need a CD or MP3 option. Here's why I bought the Sony ICFC180 and rate it so highly:

Form Factor and Buttons: This is not a large clock radio - it's about six inches square. The case is pretty much all white. Buttons are well spaced and nicely shaped. You can easily learn to use this clock in the dark or by feel alone.

Display: The backlit LCD displays not only the time, but both the alarm settings, each in its own quadrant. This is a great feature. The time is large enough to read from across the room although it could have been a bit larger. The alarm displays are smaller, but fine for viewing bedside. Viewing from different angles seems fine. It has two manual brightness levels and here Sony cheaped out a bit - an auto dimmer with sensor would have been nice. The high level is fine for the day and the low level is acceptable for the night, but who's going to move the tiny switch each day? I leave it on the low setting. I really like the room dark when I sleep and I would have preferred the low level to be a bit dimmer. The display is mostly green, with orange for the weekday alarms. The green is fine, but the orange is just a bit too bright. But again, it's acceptable.

Time Features: Auto time set - well not really. The auto time set feature prominently displayed on the box is a bit misleading. Unlike other clocks (such as from RCA) which can set the date and time and change daylight savings automatically, this clock is just set at the factory and uses a lithium battery to keep the time. If you happen to live on the east coast of the United States, then the time is correct when you first plug it in. Otherwise, you need to adjust the time zone. Since the clock doesn't know the date, daylight savings is also manual, but here at least Sony provided a single button to change the 1 hour offset. My only complaint is that the daylight savings button is on the top and could be accidentally pushed - the display does show an icon for the 1 hour offset, but it's really tiny. I would have made the daylight savings feature a toggle switch (not a push button) and put it on the back - you only use it twice a year.

Radio: Old style analog display and thumb wheel for tuning. Digital with presets would have been nice, but let's not forget, this clock only cost $25. The tuning wheel is stiff enough that it won't be accidentally changed when pickup up, moving, or just dusting the clock.

Alarm: Here's where this clock really shines. The box says it has two alarms, but in reality it has four individual alarms! The thinking by Sony is that two alarms are for the weekdays and two are for the weekends, but since the weekday/weekend feature is a manual push button, you can really use the alarms however you wish. My kids have Timex clock radios with a 7-5-2 feature which lets you determine if the alarm should be used for weekdays, weekends, or both. This is nice because it's automatic, but on the other hand you only get two alarms and have less flexibility. I think the Sony solution is excellent. The clock also makes it totally clear which alarms are active - orange background for weekdays, green background for weekends, and no display in the quadrant when the alarm is off. Setting the alarm time is also very easy with a separate twist knob for each displayed alarm. The time can be adjusted forward or backward one minute at a time. Holding forward or backward changes the minutes quickly and after a few seconds, switches to 10 minute increments. This is a much better solution than just increasing the speed as most other clocks do. In fact, the only other clock that works better is my old Panasonic which has separate forward and backward buttons for both the minutes and the hours. Regardless, this clock has excellent time set controls!

Snooze: What is it with 9 minute snooze alarms? My theory is that increments of 9 are much harder to add in your head and all that thinking wakes you up - but in reality I think it harks back to a limitation of the old mechanical alarm clocks. Anyway, I needed a 10 minute snooze and this clock has that. Plus, if you continue to press the snooze button (which is big and easy to find without looking), the snooze can be increased in 10 minute increments up to an hour - a nice feature. The clock even blinks the alarm set time after you press snooze to indicate you're beyond the original wake up time.

So that's about it. There are some other features (nap timer, alarm melodies, no power no problem), but I haven't really used these much. If you're looking for similar features and also need a CD player, Sony makes another Dream Machine alarm clock (ICF-CD843V), but that one costs $70 and looks like a weird space helmet. All in all, this is an excellent clock radio with well designed controls, tons of features, and a low price.
