XAct XS027 Sirius Satellite Radio Portable Boombox with CD Player and AM/FM Tuner Review

XAct XS027 Sirius Satellite Radio Portable Boombox with CD Player and AM/FM Tuner
Average Reviews:

I purchased two of these units and found that the volume function on the remote does not work on either unit.I contacted XACT (which was a huge hassle) and talked to supervisor after supervisor and the only explanation they could give me to why the volume could not be adjusted from the remote was that " it was manufactured that way"... are you kidding, i had stereo's 20 years ago that had a remote that could control volume.Other than that the unit is fine, but I just feel a state of the art "deluxe" boom box should be able to adjust the voulume via the remote. Why else would you waste 2 buttons on the tiny remote. It is just a pain to have to physically increase or decrease the volume manually.

Sony CFD-E100 Portable CD Radio Cassette Recorder Review

Sony CFD-E100 Portable CD Radio Cassette Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I looked for a long time for a stereo, boombox or undercounter radio that would fit well in my kitchen.I wanted something that would fit in a small space but still sound good and be able to tune in my favorite radio station which is not always easy to get in.I read tons of reviews and was getting very discouraged. But the Sony CFD-E100 is perfect for my needs. It sounds great, looks good, takes up only a little space and does *not* use the cord as an antenna - which I have found to be an annoying "feature" of some radios. Also, the case is that same white appliance plastic that my coffee maker and toaster are made from, so it blends well in my kitchen and is easy to clean.I also think it's attractive with the blue accents. To save space, the CD player is vertical and in the front, while the cassette player is in the back.So you can't see the cassette player from the front, which confused my husband for a minute. But there's no reason that one way or the other has to be the "front" so you can just turn it around if you want to use the cassette player and need to see it.It also comes with a remote, which I have not had the need to use.

Pros:
* small footprint
* digital tuner that is fairly strong
* CD player
* cassette player-recorder
* pull-out antenna (not one of those "antenna in cord" things)
* easy to clean
* decent speakers

Cons
* a little hard to figure out how to set the radio pre-sets
* price - I paid $70 - not outrageous but not inexpensive

I bought this cable to use in my car. I have a 2006 Scion xB with an AUX plug for MP3, CD & Tape players. This is just the cable for me to be able to use our Dell DJ's in my car. The sound quality coming through the radio is great with no distortion or static. It's long enough that backseat passangers have control of the devices without having to reach. I am very happy with this product.

We bought this product for our 2 1/2 year old daughter to use in her bedroom. The controls are fairly intuitive and the sound quality while not great, is definitely in line with the price-no complaints there. Everything works as advertised and the best part is that the daughter loves it and has no problem working the major controls herself.
The first one we received quit working after about a week but no worries, the vendor (J&R Music and Computer World) was very courteous and took care of all the return paperwork as well as getting us a new one fairly quickly. I was impressed with their customer service and I'm not easily impressed.
Overall a good experience with both the product and the vendor.

Belkin F5X003 Home Antenna for XM Review

Belkin F5X003 Home Antenna for XM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Belkin XM home antenna provides about the same signal gain as the original Delphi home antenna, but it is only about 2/3 the size and weight, making it an attractive option for travel. The actual metal plug configuration is, or would be, compatibile with all my various XMSR configuations here. Here comes the "but:"

In typical corporate bonehead style, Belkin has chosen a 90-degree plug for its antenna, whereas the original Delphi home antenna uses a straight plug. Why would they do that?My Delphi XM2go home dock has plenty of room for the right-angle plug, so maybe that's as far as they looked, it fits in there in a sorta snazzy-looking way.It also fits my Delphi SkyFi home dock, although barely (for the same reason), as well as my Altec Lansing inMotion iMX2 mobile speaker system for the XM2go.However, it does *not* fit into my Delphi portable boom box for the Delphi SkyFi; that unit has a cylindrical black collar that extends well above the actual jack, and although the actual plug is surely compatible, the Belkin F5X003's 90-degree plug housing will not extend far enough into the collar to reach the jack.Real dumb.Otherwise, I'd probably have given it four or maybe five stars.

Belkin F5X007 XM Audio System Review

Belkin F5X007 XM Audio System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the best sounding Boombox that has come out for Sirius or XM. I had this delivered to my work and five people have complement this unit on its looks and quality of sound.

As the reviewer stated below this looks much better sitting in front of you than in pictures. I like all the storage offered, you can hide the remote in the battery compartment, along with the lead for the built in antenna. The front volume and earphone jacks are rubber seals...good stuff, goes alone with the waterproof claim. The built in antenna is also rubber sealed around the base.

The sound output is very good, it has good bass with no distortion, it also has two tweeters that deliver nice highs. I have not had the hiss at low volume some other reviewers experienced, it sounds good with the volume set at 2 or 15.

Yeah it doesn't have a CD player, or even a FM, radio built in but that is not the reason I bought it. I have had XM for 9 months and not listened to regular radio once in 9 months, and maybe only 3 CD's in that time. So...I dont care about these omissions, if I wanted these functions I would have bought a regular Boombox. I have yet not been able to get a signal, and I work in a 100 year old building surrounded by brick and concrete. As a matter of fact the home antenna supplied points at a wall and I get three bars on the XT's signal meter

The remote is basic and missing some of the functions of the Delphi remote, but that is a small trade-off.Over all this is a well built Boombox, sounds better than any of the other satellite boxes out there. So in the end if you have XM you will not be disappointed if you make the purchase.

Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W Review

Sony MHC-EC99i Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System with Integrated iPod Dock 530W
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After I came home from 5 months in Australia to find my Aiwa stereo not working I knew it was time to buy new audio equipment for my room. I like the idea of a shelf system so I began looking for one that was 10 years newer and fit my preferences. I went the stereo route because I wanted a radio and CD player and ultimately a tape deck, although this unit does not have one. I had read several reviews of this model and went into the store (BJ's Wholesale Club of all places) to test it out. Bringing my iPod, I was thoroughly impressed. I went back the next day and purchased this bad boy.

The stereo comes in a huge box but is managable. I was surprised to find the unit overall is very light-weight and set up is easy. Once I finally had it set up, I was immediately impressed with the stellar sound. This thing is LOUD. You get crisp highs, balanced mids, and thumping lows thanks to the additional subwoofer it comes with. I don't think I've heard an iPod sound as good as it does with this unit. As I have read previously, the speaker cords are a bit short. The satellite speakers are fine, but how is a subwoofer expected to be placed on the floor as I want it with such relatively short cords? I'm planning to get some additional cord so I can place the speakers where I want.

I'm very happy with this system and being a bit picky about my audio sound has proven to help me find a great stereo. All kinds of music sound great, from thumping hip hop to reggae to accoustic rock.

This thing is also pretty sleek looking, being a metallic black, modern looking, and light blue accents in the speakers.

Why not a 5?
-Short cord length
-Small display which is hard to see from far away
-No custom EQ, although "rock" mode sounds best
-No tape deck. I admit tapes are out-dated but it would be nice to have the capability to play them

Overall VERY happy with my purchase and definitely recommend this system to and audiophile who wants to pack some punch into his/her audio system.

Sony CMT-FX300i - Micro system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 - gloss black Review

Sony CMT-FX300i - Micro system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 - gloss black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Sony has been making micros for over a decade by now, and with digital music almost completely replacing the likes of cassette tapes and even CDs to some, the AV manufacturer has been slowly removing tape decks from their smaller systems. The FX300i is no exception. Some of Sony previous year's offerings, like the CMT-EH15 and EH25, still comes with a capable, albeit high profit margin tape deck that reminds you of those boomboxes from the 80s.

The primary purpose of the FX300i is to dock and charge your iPODs, and Sony could not be making this statement any clearer. Without any support for iPhones, the device will generate alot of noise when an iPhone is docked to the system without the airplane mode switched on. There is also no support for USB playback or recording, which can be found on the FX300i's equally new cousin, the FX200, which focuses on USB playback.

Compared to its older siblings, the FX300i offers a surprisingly fuller sound, and this is true when it is put up against EH15, EH25 and a few models from 2007-2008 like the CMT-EH10. Sony doesn't seem to have added anything new to the main unit, which contain essentially face-lifted parts from EH15/EH10. A good way to repackage something old and sell it as something new. Therefore, what's most likely to be responsible for the FX300i's sound are the new 4 Ohm speakers. The new deminutive full range drivers(8cm diameter each) seem to be producing more bass than treble, which makes the system sound more fluid than the EH15/EH25/EH10. The speaker's model model number is SS-CFX200, which is the same as those for the FX200. Therefore, given that both unit outputs 5W+5W of audio, it should be safe to assume that FX300i sounds as good as the FX200.

There is a new feature that comes with the FX300i, although not an important one. The system is now programmed to automatically shut down in 30 mins if it is not doing anything (no music, no signal). This function, called Auto Standby, may be switched on or off.

So here's a list of things for the FX300i that you may want to be aware of before deciding on buying this system:

1) Ipod support up to 2009's classic, but no support for iphone. The system will charge your iphones and ipods when switched on, however is not shielded from the GSM/3G signals.
2) Full Ipod/Iphone controls (on remote controller), including menu browsing, but menu browsing is very slow, as per any Ipod docks out there such as the JBL onstage IIIp.
3) No Ipod adaptors are given, so prepare to get one ready for your ipod.
4) Timer/Sleep functions as per any standard Sony micros.
5) No USB input.
6) One front line-in via a stereo 3.5mm jack and one 3.5mm headphone jack.
7) Amplifier output is 5W+5W RMS
8) DSG-X and preset EQs (Flat, Rock, Pop, Jazz) for sound control.
9) 8cm full-range drivers for two compact wooden speakers with frontal bass-reflex ports. Bass is very heavy around the 125-150Hz range, so do not expect deep thuds from this system unless you intend to pair it with better speakers. System support speakers with impedance 4 Ohms and above. Uses standard wire-clamps for speaker leads.
10) CD-RW support, including MP3 files recorded on CD-RWs. No ATRAC3 support.
11) No tape deck.

JVC NXPS1 Audio System with iPod Connect Review

JVC NXPS1 Audio System with iPod Connect
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ok, I got these speakers because I loved the little digital receiver and the tight bass sound, even though I already have a Creative I-itrigue L3800 computer speakers.First off, the built quality is great and sound quality is phenomenal for a sub/equal to $[...] speakers. The four cubes design is very modern, small and compact. The digital receiver you see in the picture is the same size as the speakers cube. The tiny subwoofer is one of the best out there.

Sound comparisons:
I am going to compare this to my older L-itrigue 3800 that is my standard for computer speakers.I am playing this off a Sound Blaster's Fatality sound card. The L-itrigue is much better overall for sound. It produced excellent high and mid range sound, but good bass. This NXPS1 produced excellent low (bass) and midrange, but only good high. The NXPS1 is a better choice for hip-hop, rap and drum and bass Jazz (Boney James), since the bass is a lot tighter and sounds fuller.I prefer vocal, trance/dance, classical jazz, rock and the I-itrigue is way better. You can hear the vocals (S. Brightman) for rock (Duran) and alternative (Bush, Travis) music much cleaner on the Creative, but kind of muggy on NXPS1.Other music like new age (Engima), trance/ techno (PVK), lounge (St. Germaine) music, and some jazz also perform much better on the I-itrigue with better high, so you get more ambient atmosphere: chiming. The I-trigue bass crack at higher (max) volume then the JVC.The JVC power output is similar to Creative, but seems get much louder, both are powerful enough for computer use.

Features:
JVC hands down is better or cooler, but there are some features that bugged me.First, this is designed for iPods, but only support 4th and 5th generation iPod, so my 3rd or 2nd generation iPod from 2004 will not work. This is also listed in the user manual. The USB audio on the back of the receiver produce a max. of 16bit 48000 Hz, which is a joke, the sound is so flat compare to my Sound blaster card max sound rate of 24bit 192000 Hz.This will produce a higher sound fidelity/range.So I have to run my cable from the sound card to the front panel of the AUX input. The USB memory card will read mp3 sound excellently, but doesn't read my napster's wma.The JVC receiver has more features then the Creative one, like the USB and IPod input, both have headphone and AUX input.JVC has play, pause, stop buttons and a digital track on the receiver that works for the USB memory, but doesn't affect my iPod at all, nor does the remote. Both have a mini remote that looks like they were manufacture from the same factory, but JVC has 2x the buttons on it.Also the JVC have a digital timer, sleep and timer, which only a few sub-100 speakers has.

I think the JVC is a great overall speaker for sound and features.Too bad the Creative I-itrigue 3800 sound is a little better, but most people can't really tell.I will keep both for now.

SIRIUS Sportster 5 Satellite Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit Review

SIRIUS Sportster 5 Satellite Radio Receiver with Vehicle Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK.

So after all of the hype surrounding satellite radio I decided to "pimp out" my Sebring by adding SIRIUS to it.In order not to look ghetto as well as match my existing deck I decided to pick one of these up and subscribe.

First, I'll review the device. Then, I'll review the service.Basically, good news then bad news.

The device itself has a very small form factor which I found very appealing. It comes with a mini dock which essentially powers the device and routes its audio and antenna signal.Know that you'll be doing quite a bit of wiring if you do this yourself - I would recommend professional installation unless you're comfortable doing your own car installation stuff. There are 3, possibly 4, wires that you'll be dealing with:

- The CLA (cigarette lighter adapter)
- The satellite antenna
- The FM antenna extender (only needed if you choose that option)
- The line out (only needed if you choose that option)

Now, if all of these ports were in the back of the dock next to each other this wouldn't be so bad, but instead they're on either side. That's a lot of cables to have hanging out, which is why I recommend professional install if you're not comfortable. I decided to do it myself and, to get set up with the "basic" quality which is wireless FM (it's decent, but nothing to write home about) with neat wiring took me about 45 minutes, give or take. That's including mounting (which I'll get to in a moment).

SIRIUS recommends using line out/line in if at all possible.Newer decks have this jack, but some older pre-2004 likely do not, or if they do, it's a proprietary connector that might not work with the Sportster 5.I have the Kenwood MP735U and it works just fine.I found the cable at Circuit City ($24!!!) and it worked like a charm.Took some doing and even more neat wiring, but I did get it to work.I will admit, using the line out spanks the smoke out of the wireless FM or FM modulation options; it's near CD quality, especially on the Jazz and Classical stations.Again, you can use wireless FM and it will sound "okay", but line out will give you the absolute best quality possible; you just have to do another cable.

Mounting the unit has a number of options as well - one of which is not available depending on what state you're in.California, for example, has Draconian laws about vehicles; you can't have anything stuck to the front windshield.Ironically this is the easiest way to mount the device, as the suction cup works extremely well, and you just attach the device to the metal arm and adjust. If you have this option and don't mind the device up in the window, I recommend doing this.I have an old Chrysler CD changer indash not being used; a trip to Home Depot for a $.49 angle bracket did the trick - attached it to the dock with a single screw, then slipped the other end into the CD slot and like magic, it's solid and looks great right underneath the deck.I suppose I could have hard installed it with another screw or two, but I'd rather not.

All said and done the initial hardware investment came to roughly $200.Keep in mind that SIRIUS has cheaper devices that don't look nearly as good. The downside to the devices is the cigarette lighter adapter. In fact the documentation explicitly forbids a direct power tap. This is so disheartening I can't even describe it.I have to keep unplugging it when I turn the car off so it doesn't suck the battery dry.Why can't you have the option of tapping it into the player's alternate power line so it turns on with the player?I'm absolutely mystified at this oversight.

Now, the service.Oh, this will be fun.

The quality of the audio?Stellar.Never heard anything like it except on digital TV's music channels.

The quality of everything else?Horrid.Where do I begin...

- The activation/customer service phone # has extremely long wait times.it took me a total of 5 hours across 10 different phone calls to reach someone who could help me.Do the math.

- Activation/CS reps are clearly stressed over something.I talked to two who were just blatantly rude; one who had no idea what she was talking about, the other a guy who claimed he'd been "...working at SIRIUS for over 3 years and" knew what he was talking about.Funny - since he had no idea that you can't activate with invoice billing on the website (more on that later).

- SIRIUS and Circuit City have some type of conglomeration going on to force you to call to activate.CC offers a "prepaid subscription card" which is supposed to offset the initial charges (more on that later) to get service.Well that's all good and everything except the card cannot be used on the website even though the website acknowledges the card and its value. It says "cannot be redeemed".An Asst. Manager at CC informed me that calling was the only way to redeem the card.Had I known that, I wouldn't have bought that particular card, but a regular gift card that I could use on the web.Because of the aforementioned long hold times, it was a nightmare to do this simple task. The girl even told me "you should be able to use it on the web" - the other idiot claimed "you're just doing something wrong".

- Too much personal information required to sign up.Why do you care what type of car I have? All that should be needed is a credit card (if you choose that payment method) and my address/name.If it's for purposes of theft recovery, that's up to me, the buyer, to deal with that.Which I do - in my auto insurance plan.

- Website will authorize your credit card without activating an account for you. That's money you can't touch until they feel like releasing it - which could be 2 weeks.

- Inability to just sign up for an account without giving billing information and/or buying a device. Why can't I just establish the account and then pay for it?Why force me to buy the deck in order to get service established? If I wanted DirecTV and didn't have it, I call them and activate, and then the hardware comes...not the other way around.

- Website forces you to put in a credit card. You can't do invoice billing as an option. Why not?Because they know every customer would just do that and then they would be getting free service for that month grace.

-Website does not allow you to select month-to-month billing as an option, and by default it hides the quarterly and 6-month options (which would obviously be the more popular for newbies like myself).

- Telephone IVR can't hear properly.I tried to activate through the automated system and it just couldn't understand the letters "D", "I", "O", "N".That's it, and I don't know how many times the chick said "sorry?"

- No trial offered (I'm talking about in-car installation). Why can't I just buy a unit from a store that offers returns, activate a 14-day trial period with a credit card, and then return and cancel if I hate it?Because then they'd have high turnover due to buyers remorse (which I had at one point due to the above issues)

- $15 activation fee which is not disclosed on the hardware documentation. You don't find out about this until you go to the website or you talk to an agent. It should be clearly disclosed on the packaging of the device since you'd be forced to pay that fee by activating the device - not at the very last minute when you're putting in your credit card.On top of that, it's blatantly mob-ish of them to charge: an activation fee, a monthly fee, fee for the hardware, etc etc etc. They already get money from the subscription - remove the activation fee already or annualize it across the subscription.
So class, in summary:The customer service is screwed up, and in order to activate properly and get the best billing options, you need to call customer service (which did I mention is screwed up?).DO NOT activate over the web if you're using a gift card.I guarantee you, you will get frustrated.

The quality of the product is top notch. The ability to see who's playing before you select the station is excellent, and the high resolution of this screen makes navigating stations quick and easy. The audio sounds upper class if you're using the line out jack, and setup is not that difficult if you know what you're doing.Once you get past activations you should be smooth. It's just that phase that causes headaches.

Altec Lansing inMotion Max IMT702 Speaker System for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

Altec Lansing inMotion Max IMT702 Speaker System for iPod and iPhone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've read a lot of reviews online for this product, and the biggest hangup seems to be with the ipod related features, overall looks, button sensitivity and so on.Very few actually focus on the sound quality, which for me is by far the most important factor in choosing a sound system.I've owned the IM600 and Logitec Pure-fi Anywhere speakers, and this system is light years ahead of those, and any other similiarly priced portable ipod speakers in overall sound quality. This system in on par with the Bose SoundDock II portable system and is quite a bit cheaper. The only drawback to the sound is that it isn't going to blow you out of the water with incredibly deep bass. That being said, I don't think there is a portable system out there yet capable of producing significant bass due to their smaller size.Bottomline, if sound is your driving factor in choosing a rechargeable ipod speaker system and you don't want to pay $350 for the Bose SoundDock portable, the InMotion Max should be your #1 choice.

Aiwa CSD-TD26 One-piece Boombox Review

Aiwa CSD-TD26 One-piece Boombox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife and I wanted an inexpensive boombox, that was portable and had good sound. This was our choice. It doesn't quite have the booming bass that other portable stereos have, but it does have bass boost, which helps and it has a stereo expander that is simply amazing.
Also, when I was testing out boomboxes at a local stereo store, I noticed that many of the radios were unable to tune in a radio station on FM in the building. This stereo, with its digital tuning, had no such problem. The receiver works quite well.
I would recommend this boombox to anyone...especially for the price.

Audiovox Sirius SIREXT50 Indoor/Outdoor Antenna Extension 50-feet Cable (Black) Review

Audiovox Sirius SIREXT50 Indoor/Outdoor Antenna Extension 50-feet Cable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is an amplifier at the outside end of this cable. The compartment totally filled up with water after a few rain storms.I get no signal at all because of water damage.I had the connector oriented correctly accourding to the instructions, but it still filled with water. The lid eventually fell off...

I'm going to buy another cable because I need it.This time, I will seal the amplifier box with silicon glue. You should do the same thing before it rains.
