Sirius Soloist Universal Sound System Review

Sirius Soloist Universal Sound System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The way I look at this product, is that it serves all the necessary functions of the Stiletto Home Kit, while packing in enough extra features to be worth the extra fifty bucks or so. The biggest feature is obviously the speaker, so you won't have to try to patch your Stiletto through an FM radio in order to be able to listen to it. The other is that it has a link-in for your iPod as well. This isn't just an auxiliary jack to plug your iPod into; it acutally has an iPod docking station, you can recharge and even, it appears, sync up using the attached USB port. That said, there are a few issues that prevent this product from being flawless. It won't funtion as a dock for older Sirius radios; I believe the Starmate 3 is the oldest compatible model. In addition, it can't dock an iPod and a radio at the same time; there are a few awkward and easy to loose adapters that you have to keep on stand by in order unplug and switch between the two; I estimate that switching from a Stiletto to an iPod could take up to five minutes. Lastly, my biggest issue with the device is the remote. Since not all of the functions are buttons on the actual body of the device, if you loose the remote, you will no longer be able to do certain things. Granted, you may still be able to imput them directly from the sirius radio, but the manual for the product suggests that you don't do this. The remotes that come with the radios do still work even when the device is docked. My final issue with the remote is that it is not as easy to interface with the Stiletto as it is when undocked. In fact, there appear to be a few fuctions that are not available from the remote.

Product Description:
Bring your Sirius satellite radio receiver or iPod to life with the Soloistuniversal sound system. Boasting a series of docking cradles and adapters for holdingthe Sirius Sportster 3 and 4, Starmate 3 and 4, Stiletto SL100 and SL10, and Stratusreceivers, along with a separate cradle that holds all dockable iPods, the sound systemserves as an ideal audio centerpiece for your bedroom, office, or basement rec room.Simply drop your preferred audio device into one of the docking cradles and you're set.Listeners will love the Soloist's rich, detailed sound, which employs patented NXThoneycomb flat-panel speaker technology to create a dynamic, powerful audioperformance. The flat-panel surfaces vibrate seamlessly to provide a full audio range, while the four built-in exciters are coupled at lower frequencies to flesh out the bassresponse. The resulting sonic footprint resonates in all directions, making this a far moreimmersive system than most integrated speaker models.
The Soloist receives high-quality satellite reception thanks to its indoor/outdoorantenna, which includes a 21-foot connection cable. For best results, listeners shouldplace the antenna on the roof (the antenna is fully waterproof), where it's more likely tofind a clear path to the satellite signals. However, the antenna may still work well iflocated on the side of the house or near a window, provided it receives an unobstructedview of the sky.
The Soloist is also equipped with an LCD display that coordinates the built-in clock, source, timers, and other functions. The full-featured alarm and sleep timer, meanwhile, come in handy should you locate the Soloist in a bedroom. The alarm lets you wake toone of Sirius's more than 130 digital streams--including music, news, talk, sports, orentertainment--as well as recorded Sirius content or an iPod playlist. The sleep timerworks in the opposite direction, playing your Sirius or iPod tunes for 10 to 90 minutes(in 10-minute increments) until you fall asleep.
Other details include a 20-watt Tripath amplifier; five built-in equalization settings (flat, classic, rock, pop, and jazz); a dynamic bass boost function that improves the lowfrequency response; a USB connection for hooking up to your PC; line and auxiliaryinputs and a line output for connecting external audio sources to the system; aheadphone jack for private listening; and a wireless remote with buttons for virtually allof the system's functions, including a 0-9 direct keypad for selecting Sirius channels. TheSoloist, which measures 12.62 by 7.88 by 4.62 inches (W x H x D), is backed by a one- year warranty.

My kids LOVE being able to share their music around the neighborhood with this speaker. The biggest drawback is that they can turn it up TOO loud :)The batteries so far have lasted well, I was surprised at how little of the ipod battery was drained. The remote is a nice feature and the cap for the speaker is a good idea. The biggest problem I foresee is remembering to take the ipod out of the speaker when the kids are done using it.Overall a very useful and fun item!

Merkury Innovations IS2510 DJ Mixing Station for iPod (Black) Review

Merkury Innovations IS2510 DJ Mixing Station for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought this item out of curiosity. There aren't many low price point Ipod mixers for casual DJs (those that want to but never invest in the real, high $$ equip). I own an iDJ by Numark, so it's hard to not compare the two unit's abilities. This mixer does its job. It works with all NON-iTouch iPods. Since it connects via the bottom connector, you'll get the purest sound connection. Volume is controlled through the mixer and whatever home stereo or boombox you're hooked into. All controls of music selection is still done through the iPod. I was surprised to see that it also included foldable headphones w/ a boom mic (like an Xbox headset). I'll add, though, that I wouldn't use them at a "gig". You'll def get that "hey aren't those just Xbox headphones?" question.

Now to clarify the red knobs. The 2 outer ones perform sound effects or rather apply filters to the music being played. Each has 2 effects for a total of 4, but you only have access to 1 set of 2 at a time. Theres a switch that toggles you between the 2 sets. The weaker set is set1. Reverb & LP filter (LowPass). Reverb = sounds like walking down a cave/tunnel. LP =cuts bass.
Set2 is better only because of Flange. Set2 has Flange and HP(HighPass). HP just muffles the treble and accents the bass. Flange was the neatest since it's an effect you hear often in clubs. It makes the music appear to have a whoosh aspect to it. As if someone were taking the speaker and spinning it around you. You have the option of having the effects work on the Mic input or have the Mic operate traditionally.

Now for the "scratch" (they say Spin). It just produces a simple worbly sound, sort of like when a radio station censors bad language in a song--not quite a scratch. It doesn't "scratch" per se. That was the biggest disappointment in terms of the sound produced. It would have been better to have it just activate a "scratch" sound effect rather than try to engineer one with filters in the unit. It's slow to respond, so your scratching sounds like it's on Prozac. I know you get what you pay for, but again, I would have rather had a canned scratch sound activate when you moved the center disc than the output it currently generates.

The fact that it doesn't have bass, treble or gain controls for each side isn't a huge minus. As an amatuer, you can control that from wherever you're pumping the music through and the cross fader can take care of volume. There is a Main Vol out control on the mixer.

Overall, it's a great party tool for those who like being the music person at a party. Once you get tired of mixing, you can let your playlists take over. The fact that it works with all iPods (except iPhone and iTouch) is another plus. Its main gimmick is the sound effects. I say only 1 of them is worthwhile (Flange) and, unfortunately, the Scratch isn't executed very well. It's super compact and portable--great for the take-it-and-go.

Oh, the red knobs are more like Nerf material than plastic. I'm not saying that's a plus or minus, just clarifying what the texture is since you don't get that from looking at pics. The unit's built fairly solid and it is packaged very nicely in its box (lots of tight foam--great for shipping).

It wasn't for me, but worthwhile of a home if you're that music person type at a party. Just keep expectations to crossfading between 2 iPods and having 1 or 2 "real club" sound effects at your disposal. Just no scratching. Sorry no pics. Boxed everything back up to return. Right now, though higher in price, the iDJ is a bit better, though it has no flange effect.

Product Description:
Don't let silence stop the party. This DJ mixing station for iPod is a perfect way to create mixes on the fly using iPods or MP3 players. Hook up a couple iPods and work your magic with essential DJ'ing tools, like a cue channel and crossfader.
Put your own spin on music with this DJ mixer for iPod.
Use the Cross-Fade slider to blend your two music sources.
The SPIN knob simulates the scratch on a DJ turntable.
Made for iPods and MP3 Players
The DJ Mixer can be used with three different combinations of signal sources: iPod + iPod, MP3 player + MP3 player, or iPod + MP3 player. While your iPod is inserted, it also will receive a charge, so whoever provides the music can leave with a full battery. Both slots are universal iPod docking stations, and accept all iPod models.
Pro DJ Features
A seamless mix is no coincidence; you need the tools to pull it off, and Merkury Innovations was sure to include them with the IS2510. Switch headphones between Main and Cue channels, and use the cue channel to monitor the faded source. Toggle between original audio output and mix sound effects (two different effects programs--reverb/flange and low-/high-pass filter) for a little extra flavor.
Use the Cross-Fade slider to blend your two music sources while moving from one to another, or to cue up a new song (a cross-fader simultaneously fades in one source while the other fades out). Wish you had vinyl to scratch but don't want to haul around boxes and boxes of records? The SPIN knob simulates the scratch feature on a DJ turntable.
Record Your Mixes
Record your mixes to a computer or other device through the mixer's headphone output. Listen to them and improve your skills.

Barbie Petal Sound System with iPod Dock Review

Barbie Petal Sound System with iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, the dock portion is for iPod and nothing else. You can use other players with it, but they have to run off their battery and the sound goes in through some auxiliary connections behind the unit. The box says "for iPod" all over it, and even says the docking station charges iPods-- it does not say anywhere that the dock is for other players. There is one bubble that says there is an aux input for other players, including the pictured Barbie player (and believe me, it's a very tiny picture). Other devices will not dock with this product. It does not claim anywhere that other, non-iPod devices are dockable. I don't know how much more clear the packaging could be about this.

That said, it was easy to get out of the box, plug it in, and start using it. There are several trays included so that your player will fit comfortably, including a couple for non-iPods that do not dock with it. Find the tray that best cradles your device, and snap it in. Then plug it in, put in your iPod, and turn it on. The buttons are all pretty straightforward, and I imagine you'd have no trouble with the clock or the alarm.

While the sound is not of stereo quality, it does pump up the volume exactly like I need with my hearing issues. There's a radio on it in addition to the iPod dock, and it works like most any clock radio would. It's constructed so that the iPod sits at a near-perfect 90 degree angle, which is probably OK for bedside use. I'm using this in another area, and this would have been better for me if it tilted back a couple of degrees.

This is perfect for a child, as well as a nice addition to "the Barbie room" for you collectors out there. It looks really cute with my doll collection, and plays my movies and music while I'm in there moving things around or showing off my plastic girls. Great or kids-- and the kid in you.

Audio Unlimited 900MHz Wireless Floating Pool Speaker Review

Audio Unlimited 900MHz Wireless Floating Pool Speaker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Initially it looked like this would be a great product for our pool. It hooks up easily and feels like it is designed to properly handle use in the pool. The first issue I had was that the volume was very low for an outdoor device. We have a waterfall in the pool as well, so we could barely hear the speaker. After trying it out three times it now won't even play music consistently - the music cuts in and out - particularly if the volume is turned up. It offers three channels to connect the speaker and transmitter, but none of them make any difference.

I struggled giving the device two stars as it is basically useless to me at the moment. The fact that it is mechanically a nice setup and that I am still waiting for a response from customer service (manufacturer) pushed me to add the second star. Bottom line is that I would not recommend this product unless they sort out this transmission problem. Even then the volume issue really makes it fall short of the mark for an outside device.

Sony SRF-HM10 S2 Sports Street-Style FM Radio Walkman Review

Sony SRF-HM10 S2 Sports Street-Style FM Radio Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a bicycle commuter I've been looking for quite a while for the ideal radio to use while riding. Seeing Sony's SRF-HM10 recently in the store had me hoping I'd found it, but it turns out I was disappointed again.

My current - and so far - best solution is Sony's SRF-M85V radio with Shure's e2c earbuds. The sound insulation the e2c earbuds provide is simply unmatched by anything else I've seen elsewhere, including the HM10's earbuds, which unfortunately just don't go deep enough to make a tight seal.

But the biggest disappointment of the HM10 is its radio reception that is probably the worst in the line of Sony's S2 sports radios. In most pocket radios the headphone cord doubles as the FM antenna and so I thought that the HM10 must have a more advanced antenna system and/or radio receiver to make up for the lack of a long headphone cord. But this is not the case. This becomes painfully apparent when holding the hand close to the receiver when tuned in to a weak radio station. This alone improves radio reception, so your hand acts as the antenna.

Other than that, the controls are fairly straightforward. Channel preset up-down buttons that double as tuning controls, volume up-down buttons, bass boost and power button with Local and DX setting are fairly easy to learn and discern, since when wearing the radio all controls are behind your head. Wearing the radio seems comfortable, although I didn't try for long periods of time or in a high impact sports activity.

Also, I don't understand why a station scan isn't featured, but this seems to be no different than from the other S2 radios from Sony.

Unlike the description the radio is for FM reception only (no AM, no Weather band, and certainly no TV band) and provides for 15 FM station presets. A nice detail is that if you program fewer than 15 stations into the radio you don't have to cycle through all the unused slots when going from your last to your first station preset.

If it wasn't for the unacceptable reception capabilities and haphazard earbuds, that don't really seal very well, this would be a killer product.

So, unless you only want to listen to the strongest stations in your area, don't waste your money.

Hello Kitty 81409 Liquid Mouse Review

Hello Kitty 81409 Liquid Mouse
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I received this as a gift from my boyfriend, and I absolutely love it! The box I got my mouse in was different from the one pictured, but the mouse and the item number on the bar code is the same. The mouse is a small size so it's perfect for my smaller hands; it's advertised as a kid's mouse, but if you have smaller than average hands, this will fit nicely. It fits really snugly in my hand, whereas a normal sized mouse is always too big.

A warning to those of you who are sensitive to blinking lights, however, this mouse is a like a disco mouse. The lights are so bright and they don't stop blinking the entire time it's plugged in. I love it! Hello Kitty is featured inside, floating around on the blue water. If you love Hello Kitty and like blinking lights, this mouse is perfect for you.

Altec Lansing iM9 inMotion Mobile Speaker Dock for iPod (Black) Review

Altec Lansing iM9 inMotion Mobile Speaker Dock for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Excellent for travellers, but as a fellow audiophile, I have had to accept some shortcomings of the amp. The speakers are full range and the enclosure has no harmonics of its own which is rare in portables. Bass is warm and drives down low enough to make you wonder how the 2 little 2 3/4" drivers can produce warm bass guitar chords with aplomb. The tweeters are efficient and high sensitivity. Infact, they are accurate with music but also reveal both a benefit and a flaw of the design:
If you want to fall asleep to it next to your bed, the background hiss thats present at all volumes consitently(it doesnt get louder as you turn it up)this hiss could annoy you. I can sleep to it, but end up facing the tweeters away from me to attenuate the hiss. I only notice it between songs and when I am in very quiet settings. If you can tolerate placing it away about 6-10 feet and don't mind hearing the hiss during very quiet sections, its a great unit. I never notice the hiss outside or at engagements or with others. If you want something thats built tougher than other items I have owned both by Altec and other vendors, I will add that the battery capability is why you need to deal with the shortcomings of a Class D amp, whereas IC based solid stateunits are cleaner on the sound, but will never let you crank tunes for 8 hours on the beach at good volume so you can actually hear the sound will wading/swimming close to shore. The conveniences, and ALTEC's time to market with an evolved product explain some of the nuances I describe, but this will not be a choice I second guess, I have HiFi where I need it, at home, in my car and via my $500 headphones, but at the beach, in a hotel pool, or after nice day on the boardwalk, its a great way to share music for hours with good sound, great design and outstanding build quality. I chose it over their iM3, iM5 and the iM7 wont do, its too big! The iM11 has good sound and less hiss but not for the on the go, outdoors types. This item appears to have been well thought out and will be an addition to anyone who wants to utilized their ipod on the go in addition to an active lifestyle in environemnts less than optimal for the desk monger speakers so ubiquitous in the iPod speaker arena.

Have owned this unit for about 3 months now. Very happy with it. It's a nice looking unit and the sound is decent. Couldn't give it 5 stars and here's why: I took it to an outside party, and didn't bring the external antenna that's included with the unit. I thought, "The Stiletto has an antenna built in and since I will be outdoors it shouldn't be a problem." Wrong. You MUST hook up the external antenna. I wish the unit had the capability of detecting that no external antenna is connected, and in that case, switching to the antenna that's integrated with the Stiletto. Not a big deal though, the lack of that feature would not have kept me from purchasing it.

I recently purchased this for my office.I wanted a small system with good sound that I can hook my ipod to.The system has good sound quality for its size.It is very easy to hook up.The only issue I find with it is that you need to point the remote directly at the stereo in order for it to work. This does not seem to be a problem for me as the stereo is in direct eye site of my desk about 30 feet away. The remote does allow you to work all the features of the ipod many other systems only allow basic functions.I am impressed with the sound quality and it provides plenty of volume to fill my office with music which is aprox. 700 sqft. One of the best stereo's I could find for the price, that included the features I required. "I purchased at Costco was less expensive." I would purchase this product again.

Bose Acoustic Wave Music System II - Platinum White Review

Bose Acoustic Wave Music System II - Platinum White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A couple years ago I was wandering around Philipsburg, on the Dutch side of St. Martin, just out enjoying a hot Caribbean day, when I spied a stereo shop. I wandered in and saw an American tourist bartering with a sales clerk, trying to get him to come down on the price for this funny looking, all in one stereo system.

Who'd want that? I thought. I watched fascinated while they haggled. The salesman didn't come down and in the end the tourist bought the stereo that looked more like a model for a hotel. The salesman took his name and made arrangement to have it delivered to the cruise ship the tourist had arrived on.

"You interested?" the clerk told me.

"Nah, not really," I said, but I was interested and the clerk knew it. He turned it on, not loud, and it sounded oh so sweet. He was playing Linda Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel" and I've always been a sucker for Linda.

He told me he could have it delivered to my cruise ship duty free. I asked him how it sounded played loud. He cranked it up and I opened my wallet.

Now I find myself writing a review about this odd looking stereo. First off, I have to say I love the sound for the most part and have since purchased a wave radio and a couple wave radios with CD players, both the latter for work.

The good: This machine will fill your room with gorgeous sound and if you're playing a CD that was professionally produced or if you have ripped one and are playing it back from your iPod thorough the unit's aux in jacks, you'll probably be very satisfied, more than satisfied with the sound you get.

The bad: What if you're not playing a professionally produced CD? What if you have some of those early, almost illegal Beatle tapes, which have almost no bass on them? Or a tape of a Springsteen concert, which has too much bass? What if you've ripped these to iTunes? What if you want to play them through your Bose Acoustic Wave Music System II? You're SOL if you want to do that.

I have stereos in every room and they all have bass and treble controls. Still, regarding the Bose, I can equalize the sound coming out of my iPod Touch, but I shouldn't have too. At the very least Bose should have included a bass and treble control. Heck, my dad had those in the fifteen dollar radio in his Fifty-Two Chevy.

In conclusion, if you are going to use this as your main stereo and you have a hours and hours of concert tapes as I do, then this might not be the stereo for you, but if, on the other hand, you have only professionally recorded CDs from the major record companies or if you want to run your television sound though this machine via the auxiliary inputs, you'll probably be very happy with this unit.

Our best all-in-one music system is now even better. The Acoustic Wave? music system ll offers more lifelike sound for larger spaces, with improved functionality and versatility, yet remains refreshingly simple to use. Acclaimed waveguide speaker technology still lies at the heart of this system's performance, so it rivals the sound of much larger, more complicated stereos. An all-new Bose digital platform fine tunes the sound for more accurate, consistent music reproduction-even at louder volume levels. Vocals sound cleaner. Instruments ring truer. The result comes closer to music in a natural, live-performance setting. The Acoustic Wave? music system ll plays your home-burned CDs as well as regular discs and AM/FM radio. You'll find a new headphone jack for private listening, auxiliary inputs and an updated informational display. A variety of accessories adds to your listening enjoyment at home or on the go. And you can add our optional 5-CD changer for even more continuous listening. The system hasn't changed in size or convenience. It still fits almost anywhere in your home, easily controlled from across the room by a credit card-sized remote. It accomodates your MP3 player, travels easily and goes portable with the optional power pack. The original Acoustic Wave? music system changed opinions of what a quality stereo system could be. Now, the Acoustic Wave? music system ll challenges our perceptions once again, with sound that comes even closer to the essence of live performance.

Case Logic Portable Satellite Radio Case Review

Case Logic Portable Satellite Radio Case
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Summary:

I looked at a lot of cases for my GPS and based on the reviews here bought this one.For the same price as a quality case that would only hold the GPS this case also holds the accessories.Major plus is that it my Garmin Portable Friction Dashboard Mount for nuvi Series and StreetPilot C5XX Series GPS Navigators (C530, C550, and C580) which means I can put all signs of there being a GPS away in this case.Plus this is a much cleaner place to store your friction dashmount so it doesn't lose its tackiness from dirt and grime. In addition to just hiding the accessories, my wife then removes the GPS's holding case to fit in her purse and shoves the larger case under the car seat (it is too large for a glovebox, but if it were smaller it might not hold everything).

Pros:
Cost is on par with a quality GPS only case
Holds large friction dashmount & power cord
Case is as rugged as any zipper/hinge case can get

Cons:
Too large for glovebox
No carrying strap

Conclusion:

In the end the cons are minimal and I highly recommend this case.If you intend to use a friction dashmount I would say this should be considered a necessity to keep it clean.

Alternative:

If you are just looking for something really rugged to protect just your GPS checkout the OtterBox 2000 Waterproof Electronics Case or the Case Logic GPSP-2 Professional GPS Case for 4.3-Inch Flatscreens for around $20 shipped.I was going the Otterbox for my use but the Case Logic looked better for my wife's purse. Then I saw this one which ended the debate.

Panasonic SC-HC40 Compact Stereo System Review

Panasonic SC-HC40 Compact Stereo System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a CD player with decent sound with an iPod dock for a small to medium sized room, this piece will work. I really like the size of it (very compact, smaller than I thought it would be) and the design of it. It's very sleek and looks great in our living room. The remote control is also better than I would expect for a system of this size. And, considering how strangely difficult it is to find a CD player with an iPod dock at a reasonable price, I'm glad I have this.

I only dock it down a few stars because of the sound. The sound is average. Despite some minimum controls like bass and treble, the unit just doesn't produce a crisp, sharp sound. It can definitely fill a room, which is great, but for true audiophiles and stereo-quality sound, I'd advise to look elsewhere (and probably at a higher priced unit). My wife loves it and thinks it's great. I, however, can tell the sacrifice in sound quality. It's not bad by any means, just a few notches below the best out there.

It's also more difficult than it should be putting in and taking out CDs.

For us, in its particular room, function (size and design) wins out a bit over quality. When I buy a bigger home with multiple rooms, I'll upgrade to a more traditional stereo system.
