Sony TCM-929 Pressman Desktop Cassette Recorder with Automatic Shut-Off Review

Average Reviews:

I've had one of these since 1993. It's perfect. It's a tape player and recorder, and that's it.
It never jams on a good tape. It's perfect at what it does.

Being an audiobook lover I use it to listen to my books around the house and it has had a lot of use!
Unlike units that have CD players, the tape is the focus, not an afterthought.
Also, it's far superior to tape units that switch sides for you, because they often switch sides at the least resistance, not necessarily the end of the tape.
In summation, this is the tape audiobook listener's friend for reliable, no trouble, listening for hours and hours and years to come..

Pioneer Inno Portable XM2go Radio with MP3 Player Review

Pioneer Inno Portable XM2go Radio with MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been an XM subscriber since my first SkyFi when Opie and Anthony started in October 2004.I added a MyFi when those launched and appreciated its features (ability to store songs, built-in FM modulator, auto on/off in the car, more presets for all the great music channels), but found its on-the-hip portability sketchy.

I purchased an Inno a few weeks ago and am blown away by the improved portability over my MyFi.
1. The reception is better--I can even get a signal in the gym (lots of windows, granted, but the old MyFi reception broke up too much for usefulness indoors).
2.The styling is sleeker. This thing is less than half the size of the old MyFi--about the size of my cellphone.
3. The store-on-the-go/auto-recording features are great.I've been recording Bob Dylan's theme time radio hour when they air it during the night so I've got it the next AM.Only fluke is that recording labels are not always EXACTLY the start and finish of each song.Sometimes you get a second or two of the song before/after.
The negatives that keep it from getting 4 stars--I miss the preset buttons from the MyFi.I had 30 presets, so could always find the right music/comedy/news/etc. for the moment. The Inno doesn't have any presets (unless I've missed something). The XM/Napster software doesn't work on the Mac, which is frustrating. Also, I'd ordered a car kit and still haven't received it.

In the end, though, this little radio is a HUGE step forward.

Artdio 2.0 Portable Speaker Sys Silver Nic Review

Artdio 2.0 Portable Speaker Sys Silver Nic
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this from the My Coke Rewards (MCR) program, so it was free.I see Amazon has it for less than $15, which is about the most I would recommend anyone pay.The speakers sound OK, not a whole lot of bass, but give the size of the speakers, its not surprising. The speakers are small and would not take up much room if portability is important. There is no volume control on the speakers, volume control is handled by your mp3 player. It takes 4 AAA batteries to power, although it comes with a cable to power it through a computer's USB port or you can buy a transformer to run it from household power.Overall, they seem to be fairly well built.I have been using it while working out in my shed and the speakers can get fairly loud, but like I said, they are lacking in bass.

The MCR site says it is for iPods, and while it may be tailored to provide a nice "dock" for iPods, the connection to the speaker is through the headphone jack.It is not a true "dock" where you can charge up your iPod.This has the advantage that non-iPods can "dock" themselves using the built in dock if they have a bottom earphone jack and are similar enough in size and shape to an iPod, like my Sansa Fuze is a copy of the previous gen. Nano and fits in the "dock" quite nicely so I can use the built in headphone jack on the "dock" of the speakers. The speakers come with a cable to connect to the headphone jack on any mp3 player that can't fit in the "dock".

Overall, these are an OK set of speakers. If you are looking to not spend more than $15 for speakers then I would recommend this set, however, if you are willing to spend more, I would recommend getting something larger that has better bass.If I had to do over again, I would not have used up my MCR points on these speakers seeing how much they are worth.I could have DL'd three albums for the MCR points this set cost me.

Wanted something inexpensive that I could run off a battery to listen to material too lengthy for a CD.This is perfect---it holds all the material I wanted with room for more and sounds good in the playback. It was easy to load using a windows vista/windows media player system.I have the very, very cute pink model. My minor complaint is that I haven't figured out how to light up the display without resorting to adjusting the volume but that is not a big deal when one considers how cheaply you can carry around lots of material to listen to.

Audiovox XR9 XM Satellite Radio Receiver Review

Audiovox XR9 XM Satellite Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First, I'd like to comment on XM Radio in general:I love it!I have a rather long drive to work and it's wonderful to listen to music without interruption. It's great not to hear any commercials (I have no idea what the local car dealers etc. are up to now that I'm immune to their ads).Another XM service I use daily is the traffic report.Never having to wait for a local station to broadcast the traffic conditions is very helpful.I'm still learning all the channels and keep finding new ones that I like.Regarding the XR9, I like it alot (although it's my first XM radio receiver so I have nothing to compare it to).It has a nice large display with a few different options as to how information is shown. It also will show sports scores and stock prices and so far has been really easy to program. The blue display is cool looking (although a choice of colors would be nice).I think the text on the display is much nicer than on other XM receivers I looked at.At first I had my XR9 receiver hooked up using the built in wireless transmitter which transmits the stations from the XR9to the car's radio.DON'T DO THIS.The sound quality using the wireless feature was horrible (it sounded really tinny like bad AM radio) and there was alot of interference from over the air stations (I'd imagine that this would be a problem in most metropolitan areas with alot of on air stations).I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT USING THE WIRELESS FEATURE.After a week, I had the receiver direct wired to my radio and the difference was incredible. Now, the stations come in perfectly clear and sound as good as my FM stations or CD's.Another feature that I'm not in love with is the flat buttons.Since I use this receiver in my car, I find it somewhat difficult to change the stations sometimes because the buttons are flat and don't stick out of the receiver.I find myself sometimes hitting more than one button at a time. The "1" and the "0" are especially tricky to push sometimes since they curve around the side of the receiver. Those few features aside, I don't mean to sound negative about the reciver. It looks great in my car and now that it is hard wired, it sounds fantastic too.I like the display and its viewing options. Also, there are a few other options (like the alarm) available that I haven't yet used which I'm sure will add to my enjoyment of this product.

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman Review

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I normally don't review electronics, but so many people before me have knocked this great player down and I have to correct the myths.First of all, this is NOT a MP3 player. It's a CD player that plays MP3 cd's that you burn yourself. It also plays ATRAC and ATRAC+ cd's which is Sony's version of MP3 that compresses files to 1/2 the size of MP3's and retains the quality. Most of these people before this review are not well versed in MP3/CD players as evidenced by the one that thinks this is an simply a MP3 player and doesn't know how to hook it up to "get music" (why do these people bother posting and skewing the reviews is beyond my imagination).I'm reasoning that most of these people never bother to read directions and simply jump to a negative conclusion when they can't figure something out.Let's face it, technology today is complicated and learning how to read is the first step so READ THE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!
This is a great cd player for the money. The sound is loud and crisp (when you use the first bass setting) and I'm really picky about bass. However, buy a good pair of headphones.Sony "mega-bass" is the best.As with all players, the ear-wear is always poor quality and the player WILL sound poor no matter what. The software is so completely fool-proof that the people complaining about it probably aren't running a system that's up to date and don't understand the problems with Windows 98 or never defragmented their system. It's simple to use and runs EXACTLY like the software that came with the Intel MP3 player from a few years back.I used the ATRAC+ conversion at 64 kbps (equivalent to 128 kbps for MP3) and was able to get over 300 songs (26 cd's) at an average of 4-5 minutes each.If I used ATRAC (not the + one), I'd probably get 50 less. The sound was not compromised at all.I WAS SHOCKED!Keep in mind I have a $20 pair of headphones and I haven't listened to it in my car or home stereo (or with the cheap headphones that came with). The file compressions to ATRAC+ did take a while but only a fraction longer than regular MP3 converting. There is one problem though, when you already have a MP3 file to convert to ATRAC or ATRAC+, the software doesn't allow you to cancel and you need to control+alt+delete to abort if you change your mind.SONY should patch this problem and I intend on letting them know about it on their support page (which is very good by the way!).
The buttons are easy to use and I have no complaints except for the fact that you can't shuffle play the first track in each file you create on the CD.The player will only randomly select so you may get up to 2 tracks from the same file played after each other (a very minor issue and I never had more than 2 songs from the same file play together). The instruction manual is a little vague in some spots but I was able to easily figure things out by simply play around with it.
I wanted a player to bring to work that had all my favorites songs on one disc.I was able to achieve this with ATRAC+ technology. This way I can bring double the amount of music with me.I cannot recommend this player enough!!I usually buy small electronics made by Phillips because I've had good luck with them. This is not the first Sony cd player I own.I've not been happy with other Sony items I've bought (5 disc cd player, portable cd player a few years back and an amplifier) so I hesitated when buying.I have a SONY Vaio PC and have had no trouble with it.I also like my Sony Cybershot camera so I thought I'd give them another try.I'm glad I did!

Product Description:
Get the most from digital music with Sony's DNE510 portable CD player, which includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take advantage of ATRAC3plus, Sony's proprietary music-compression technology when making custom MP3 CDs on a computer. The player includes Sony's popular Jog Dial control for easy folder navigation, a two-line dot-matrix display, and achieves up to 40 hours of continuous playback on two "AA" type batteries (not included).
ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from a PC's hard drive and burns them to a CD using ATRAC3plus compression.
Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. Bookmark playback lets you program favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Xact XTR1 Sirius Satellite Plug and Play Receiver Review

Xact XTR1 Sirius Satellite Plug and Play Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, the XACT is a very nice receiver.I have owned a PNP2 and this receiver and I prefer this one.The XACT, while not wearable, is very portable. You can even buy the Powerpod and take it anywhere you go.The size of the receiver does come with setbacks though, there are only 10 S-Seeks compared to 20 on most of the other receivers. The screen is smaller (although very nice), and the presets require a little more work to set.The greatest thing though is the service itself. It is great not to hear any commercials, and the music streams are top quality. The Talk, News, and Sports are also great.Sirius recently added a Maxim channel, which is quickly becomming one of my favorites.Sirius's sports are great, I am a fan of football and there is nothing like hearing your team that is normally not carried locally. In the end I recommend this receiver and Sirius.

Had mine for less than three weeks now, it is my first ever! For the money, pretty thrilled! I wanted to avoid buying music from Proprietary people, so I got this.I got in over 300 songs.Package claimed 1000 songs, which if you have 1000 1.9MB songs, yes you might get them in.I could not.I like the equalizer settings, but can tell you I like the headphones I already own for bass response over the earbuds included. The Win32 memory may make it where you can't record the tracks in the order you wanted. If I had to add a downside, there is no clip, or holder, or case.It is very light.OVERALL, for me and my friends, I have bought 5 so far!

Tivoli Audio iSongBook Portable Music System for iPod (Black/Silver) Review

Tivoli Audio iSongBook Portable Music System for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good, solid product. The tuner is first rate, the sound very good if not audiophile quality, and the AA batteries last a very long time when using 2500 ma rechargables. The remote works well, but is of limited use as the inputs - the band or iPod - cannot be fully controlled with it. It falls short of five stars based on the mediocre bass and just OK high end sound. The iPal has, to my ears, slightly better overall sound, albeit mono.

If you're like me, you enjoy working with a little music in the background and you hate most of the stuff on the radio these days. This RCA Personal CD Player is perfect for plugging up at work on those days when you're doing time in front of a computer or when you're taking a break. When you're on the road, it's great for those late evenings at the motel when everyone else has called it quits.

It's also excellent to use when you walk, jog, or do any other outdoor activity that involves time alone to think. It has 45 second ESPX skip protection which reads the disc ahead so that you don't skip a beat....literally.The e-clips earpieces stay snug and work a lot better than those speakers that you have to place inside your ear. Also, the sound is excellent, thanks to the bass boost feature.

In short, this is a great buy if you just enjoy listening to you're own music instead of the radio and don't have room in your office or fanny pack to cram a giant system into.

I bought this amazing product about three weeks ago. I previously had a KOSS mp3 player and after a week, and not being able to return it, I threw it away. So then I decided that I did not want a complicated MP3 playback CD-Player that was prone to failure, and I purchased the D-E350 from Best Buy. I have never had a single problem with it. It has amazing sound, very very long battery life, never skips and looks great. It plays all my cd's, including CD-RW's, even badly scratched ones.
Unlike the cheaper cd-players, this one comes with Great Headphones. Not the kind you would expect bundeled with a cd-player. I have been using it for three weeks, and I have only had to change the batteries once. I just can't get over how great a player this is. I HIGHLY recommend this cd-player to EVERYONE!

Sirius SPR1 Sportster Satellite Radio Receiver Review

Sirius SPR1 Sportster Satellite Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've owned a Sportster for about 3 months now.I am happy with the unit and its features, and even happier with Sirius programming.

This unit is smaller than past portable units and features the latest chipset that offers many new features. You also have the ability to switch the unit between green and amber illumination (you can even mix the two). And an RF modulator is built into the Sportster so that you can easily listen to it on car or other FM radios.

The unit offers the ability to select your favorite NFL team and be reminded whenever your team is playing a game--thus the name "Sportster"(all NFL games are broadcast on Sirius). This unit was a great choice even though I don't like listening to sports games.

This unit offers 30 presets spread over three "bands."Having this many presets is important when you have a service offering 65 completely commercial-free music channels and over 50 talk, news, sports and entertainment channels.

You can also use the 10 preset buttons to directly enter a channel number if you first press the jog/dial button.Navigating channels is further simplified by a "Category" button that allows you to scroll through the different categories of programming (Pop, Rock, Country, News, Talk/Entertainment, etc.).

It also features a new "jump" button. With this button you can jump back and forth from whatever channel you are listening to to the traffic and weather channel for your area.Sirius currently offers 10 channels of continually-updated traffic and weather that cover 20 of the largest metropolitan areas. When I press the jump button for San Diego traffic, this unit automatically waits to switch me to the S.D./L.A. traffic channel until it begins San Diego information (the channel switches between San Diego and L.A. information every 4 minutes). If your city is not covered, you can assign another channel (like CNN) to the jump button.

If you are listening to your favorite song, or a program you really enjoy (like "Car Talk" on the NPR channels), you can just press the "Memo" button and if your Sportster is on, a beep and on-screen message will tell you whenever your song or program is playing. You can store 20 songs and/or programs this way.

There are some technical issues with the Sportster.I've spoken to several tech reps, and it seems some of these problems were due to the early car cradles for this unit (car cradles allow installation of the Sportster in your car and feature a "line out" jack for direct connection with head units offering auxillary inputs).I had to swap mine out a few times to get one that would work.

One problem that hasn't been solved seems to be common to all Sirius receivers using the new chipset.Sometimes the unit will play at a slower speed (like a 45 record played at 33 speed) when you turn it on.This is always resolved by turning the unit off and on again, and it happens very infrequently.

I chose to buy a 4-year, over-the-counter-swap service agreement with my Sportster, and I highly recommend a service contract to anybody who buys a Sportster (or any other portable satellite receiver).

I do experience signal loss while driving around town.I lose the satellite signal (which is line-of-sight) about every sixth time I drive under a bridge or overpass. The addition of more ground repeaters, which amplify the signal on the ground, will solve this problem over time.

Sirius is currently only officially available in the continental U.S. due to licensing issues. But I have driven over 1,000 miles south from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas (at the tip of the Baja Peninsuala in Mexico) with excellent reception throughout both trips.

A home kit, boombox and additional car kits are available so that you can listen to your Sportster virtually anywhere.Of course, with either you will need an unobstructed location for the antenna. The most difficult part of setting up your Sportster is running the antenna cable to the unit.Though the cable is very small, you do have to find a path for it, and this can be particularly difficult in a car where the antenna must be outside and the radio inside (some people do locate the antenna on the dash, but results seem mixed--external mounting is much preferred). The car antenna included with the Sportster car kit is magnetic (the magnet is very strong).

Sirius satellite radio is as valuable as cable TV.Once you have it, you won't want to do without it.And this Sportster unit allows you to take full advantage of the vast programming Sirius offers.I would have given 5 stars if it weren't for the ongoing (infrequent) technical issue. But with the service contract, I know I'll always be able to switch to any redesigned unit.

Product Description:
Get in the game and join the future with the plug-and-play Sirius SPR1 Sportster satellite radio receiver. In addition to all of the capabilities Sirius receivers are known for, the Sportster maximizes the listening experience of Sirius' broad sports lineup. Just like other Sirius-compatible receivers, the SPR1 decodes the incoming Sirius digital-quality radio program information from more than 120 music, news, and sports channels and delivers an audio signal to your radio or other audio output equipment. It's easily transportable and, with the use of Sportster kits, enables you to listen to satellite radio programs at home, in your car, or during the backyard barbeque.
An easy-to-read, 6-line display tells you the channel name and number, category, artist name, song title, and time simultaneously. To suit your environment, you can control the contrast, dimming, and color (amber or green) of the display. Program up to 30 presets of your favorite streams, as well as search by stream, artist name, song title, or category. With the touch of a button you can switch between the traffic and weather reports for your city and any of the other music, news, or entertainment channels. Enter up to 20 of your favorite songs, and the receiver will alert you when they are playing on any of the music channels. Listing and search options let you search by channel name, artist name, song title, category, and presets to find your favorite programming. Time functions include an onscreen clock, alarm, and sleep timer, as well as a program alert that allows the unit to switch to a preprogrammed stream at a selected time. A full-function remote control lets you select channels, browse categories, or change display settings quickly and easily.
The Sportster earns its name because it has enhanced features specifically designed for sports lovers. The Game Alert feature prompts you when your favorite NFL or other sports teams are playing on Sirius. The Game Zone lists all of the play-by-play games and scores on Sirius by league (MLB, NFL, NHL, etc.). And what sports fan could do without the Sportster's personalized team logo startup and shutdown screen?
The Sportster has a built-in FM transmitter that allows the music received by the unit to be transmitted to a nearby FM tuner. Simply set the frequency from which you would like the Sportster to transmit and tune to that station frequency on your conventional radio. Now you've got satellite radio playing anywhere! Note that the Sportster must be used with one of the following adapter kits:

    Sirius SPB1 Sportster boombox
    Sirius SPC1 Sporster car kit
    Sirius SPH1 Sportster home kit

Sirius satellite radio is a subscription service that provides more than 120 channels of programming, from digital-quality music to news, talk, and sports. It is available only in the lower 48 states--not in Alaska, Hawaii, or U.S. territories.

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System (Black) Review

Coby HDR700 Portable HD Radio System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been using the product for a few weeks now.I've noticed that there are differences in performance depending on the situation.I'm not sure if this is due to the product itself or if it is HD radio itself that is to blame. Here is what I've noticed:

1) I primarily listen to AM radio, but when I listen to FM radio, the HDR-700 mostly performs as I expected. There is an easily noticable sound quality difference between the HD and regular radio, but it's not huge.Only stations that are already almost completely static free will come in HD.

2) On my AM radio stations, when the unit locks into the HD signal, the difference is pretty amazing.I can't normally get any AM radio station to be completely static free, but this easily does that and more WHEN IT GETS A HD SIGNAL

There is one major problem. The DC adaptor that powers the until when not in battery mode severely interferes with the radio's reception.Severely.When the unit is plugged into the wall - the reception is so bad that a 100,000 watt station 50 miles from my house does not come in at all. However, as soon as it is on battery power, it works great.

Jensen AM/FM/CD Boom Box - Black (CD472) Review

Jensen AM/FM/CD Boom Box - Black (CD472)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this portable CD player to occasionally listen to some CDs while I baked. It is small and light enough to move around but I wanted it stationary. The radio reception is mmmeh. If some one in the house moves, the signal is lost to static.I wanted to play CDs so I overlooked this nuisance.

I took it out of the box and read the instructions. It states to always use the stop button to stop the CD and never to just open the lid.Okay, I figured it was cheap so I would follow the instructions to prolong the life.

I found a place to put it and left it there.I only played a few CDs a week.Once, I used the repeat feature.I always used the stop button and even waited for the CD to stop spinning before switching out.Overall this product probably had less than 40 hours of service before it started to clank when it tried to read a CD.It played another two times and now it can't read CDs at all.Only clanks, clanks, clanks.

So for $20 it worked for about 40 hours. It was in only in our house for about 2 months.

Delphi SA50000 XM SKYFi Radio Receiver Review

Delphi SA50000 XM SKYFi Radio Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The SA50000 is well-worth the money. It's a bit bulky compared to the Roady 2 but you have to remember that the Roady is for car audio use only. The SA50000 can be installed on a boombox/indoor unit or in the car so you get both functions with this receiver. When you buy this receiver, there are no accessories included except the remote. Use a C2032 battery to power the remote. So before you head out and buy this, don't forget to buy the battery. I had to open one of my old motherboards and pulled out the battery. I don't think it's mentioned on the packaging about what type of battery it uses. So I'm saving you all a headache and telling you. Ok let's start off with the installation. I bought a Delphi Boombox to hook up the receiver. To actually review this product, I would have to review the boombox as well cos without a boombox or car adaptor, this receiver is useless. So...installing the receiver is quite easy on the boombox. The boombox has a cradle that catches the receiver. Be careful not to force the receiver into the cradle mount. Just slide the receiver into the cradle. The contact pins should catch the receiver in the cradle, and then lightly push the receiver forward. Push the receiver on the top-most part of the device. Push the receiver until it clicks. To unseat the receiver, just push it again and it will make a faint click. Pull the receiver off gently.

Now, to activate. It's really a painless process. Make sure that the receiver is hooked up and seated properly in the boombox cradle. Ok, power-up the boombox and receiver.Just have your credit card ready, a pen, and a piece of paper. Once the receiver is powered-up, go to Radio ID channel. To switch channels, use the rotary dialer until it says Radio ID. It should give you the Radio ID number. Copy it and then activate it online. Activation fee via online is about $2.00 less than if you activate it over the phone. Once you get a message on the XMradio activation page, go back to your receiver and start looking for the channels, starting with channel 1,4,5,6,7, then 122. You can also use the number keys to switch channels. The ENTER key is that big button on the rotary dialer's hub. If after activating it, you don't get any sound from the channels I mentioned, please don't blow a gasket. Give it like about 30 mins. for the satellite to update your receiver. After about 30 minutes, you should be getting most if not all 120 channels.

Now the remote...well one thing is missing on the remote and that's the MENU key that's found on the receiver. Maybe it's somewhere on the remote but I haven't found it yet. Remote is fairly straightforward operation. As for the boombox, it comes with an antenna. It has a 20 ft. cable. I suggest you put the antennae close to a window in your house. It says to look for the southern part of the house to get best results. I didn't bother looking for itcos how many people here in US know exactly where the south part of their house is? Anyways, get the antenna on an elevated position and turn it towards the window. The receiver has a function that will tell you the signal strength of the satellite waves and the terrestrial repeater waves. You can access this by going to MENU and then scroll down to Antenna Setup. If you see four-bars filled for satellite and three bars filled for terrestrial, then you are GOOD TO GO. The boombox packs a wallop! The sound is crisp, tight, and powerful. I have it at level 20 volume and it's shaking my lounge. I don't know what the max volume is and I won't even try it. The boombox comes with a humongous sized power adapter to power your receiver and boombox. Overall, the SA50000 is a fantastic receiver, it's easy to install, activate, and it gives a nice clear sound and signal. My suggestion is buy SA50000 and keep it for home use only. If you want to have a satellite radio for the car, I suggest you get the Roady 2.

Delphi SkyFi2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver and Car Kit Review

Delphi SkyFi2 XM Satellite Radio Receiver and Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After much research, I finally decided that this was the receiver for me!So far, so good.

I am primarily using this in the car, so I grabbed this version that included the car kit.If you only want one receiver but want to use it in two cars, you will need an extra car kit. It's too annoying to try to move the antenna between cars.I had looked at a few portable units, but I chose this one since it was designed primarily for those in the car, and I wanted the a unit that was going to be easy to use when I'm in the car.

Installation was very easy.I did it myself, and my antenna is on top of my roof near the front. The antenna cord is about 24 feet long, so there is plenty of extra cord if you are in a sedan like me.I ran my cord right under the weatherstripping on the front windsheild as was suggested at cruchfield.com, then through the door and around the door jam.The kit also includes one of those little tubes that you can fit around your cords, as you will have three: antenna, power and the cassette. All cords plug into the base.

I used the air vent base installation instructions (the kit also comes with dashboard mount and a swivel mount, but both can damage your car when you're ready to remove the mounts). The only thing is that I wish it were a little more steady from side to side when I am pushing the buttons. It takes some playing around with to get just right.

The receiver itself has been pretty easy to use.I definitely recommend actually reading the instructions on how to use all of the different buttons. There are 30 memory buttons available. There is also a neat feature that will alert you to when your favorite artist or song is playing, and the alert will allow you to go straight to that channel if you so desire.

One downside is that only the buttons have a backlight. The labels above them do not have these lights. So, until I get to remember exactly where the "jump," "memory" and "menu" buttons are, it's going to be to difficult to use them in the dark.

There is also a 30 minute record/replay function on this receiver. However, anything you save is erased when the unit is turned off.

I tracked this item for a few weeks before I bought it, as I noticed that the price occasionally would change from day to day.Amazon's price when I bought this three days ago was $93.99, and today it is listed about $3 less. Some third party merchants have dropped the price below the Amazon price from time to time, but generally, the Amazon price has been the lowest.

If you buy this item before the end of April 2006, there is also a $30 rebate available from XM.

Although I have not actually been a Sirius subscriber, I took advantage of the online trials with Sirius and XM.I also read some reviews of both and examined their channel guide.Their offerings are very similar. If you are interested in sports, XM has great college ACC/Pac 10/Big 10 channels (I am a UNC grad, so I have to have my ACC sports!), NASCAR and MLB.Sirius offerings are more towards NFL/MLH fans. One review I read said that the music on Sirius tended to be what he phrased as "riskier," which the reviewer defined as playing more deep cuts, etc.I have been very, very pleased with the XM offerings, playlist, variety, talk, etc.No complaints with XM here!
