AM/FM/Cassette Stereo Recorder Review

AM/FM/Cassette Stereo Recorder
Average Reviews:

The computer is marking this a two-star item when all I indicated is one star.If no stars were possible I'd mark that.

The first day I received this radio I tried a pre-recorded cassette tape.It played all right -so after a couple of minutes I shut it off, put in a fresh tape, and tried to record a radio program.

The radio played all right, but it failed to record.The tape did not advance.And it was also the last time I could produce even a hint of sound out of an old tape.

Perhaps the radio thought I should be honored at sitting in on its last gasp.I was not.

Yes, it's a cheap item but I feel it should have given me at least a solid week's performance before it lay over on its back.

To return it for repairs or replacement would make the loss even greater because the shipping expenses are so high.

I have ordered a new Sony from another source at considerably more expense.The new one is supposed to play CD's as well as tapes, which is not really what I wanted - but I simply could not find another simple radio/cassette recorder.

A most unpleasant experience was had by all.

Ion iCD04FX Personal Audio Portable DJ Station Review

Ion iCD04FX Personal Audio Portable DJ Station

This is a crossover. That means that while it isn't a Technics turntable, it isn't a raging ghetto blaster either. I'm new to te whole mixing thing, and I find it straightforward and easy to use, so I recommend it to anyone who wants to pretend they're Pete Rock. However, it won't get you any where if you're serious about DJing. It isn't very loud, but you can plug it in to larger speakers. This Boombox is a good gift idea for a teenager that likes music. It's fun, and that's about it. My only real problem with it is that the right player skips, so we'll see if I can sort that out.

Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM - Speaker system Review

Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM - Speaker system
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for a great sounding powered speaker for your Roady, and don't plan to move it around very often, this could be just what you're looking for.The sound quality is very good, even at low volume levels.The sound is clear, with good range.

Battery life is about 8 to 10 hours, depending on volume level.The Playdock powers itself off automatically to extend battery life after the Roady has been off for five minutes.Unfortunately, there is no battery gauge.

But the PlayDock weighs enough that most of us won't be moving it around very often.Most people will probably leave it plugged in most of the time.If you're looking for a portable unit, keep in mind that the PlayDock weighs about as much as a bowling ball (I haven't weighed it, but I'd estimate around 15 pounds).

The controls are simple.The only controls are a power button, volume, mute and a "wide" button.Although the sound is well balanced, I was surprised to find no bass/treble controls.And a battery gauge of some kind would be nice.

Pro's:
Very good sound quality
Battery Life
Simplicity

Con's
Heavy!
No battery gauge

If you're willing to sacrafice weight for sound quality, I recommend the PlayDock.

Audiovox SIR-CMB3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver and Docking Station Review

Audiovox SIR-CMB3 Sirius Satellite Radio Receiver and Docking Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great receiver. There are some others out there that are smaller but aren't as easy to use and don't have the clear text that the Audiovox has. I looked at the XACT and the Star Dock before buying this unit. The other units didn't have direct track access (they only have preset buttons 1-6) so imagine scrolling through 120+ channels to get the one you want. There are 10 buttons to select from on the Audiovox. The can be used for presets or for direct channel access (just press the dial first). The Audiovox also has a bigger screen with four lines of text.

I also really like the quality of the Sirius service. I've listened to XM before and the quality just isn't as good. Being able to listen to my school's college football games is a great bonus.

Highly recommended!

Delphi SkyFi3 XM Satellite Radio with Car Kit Review

Delphi SkyFi3 XM Satellite Radio with Car Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This would by my forth XM unit I've used since signing up in 2003. I've used the SkyFi, the SkyFi2, the RoadyXT (My brother actually) and now, the SkyFi3.Choosing this unit itself was a no-brainer when shopping around for portable units.

The SkyFi3 takes all the functionality of my beloved SkyFi2 (pause/rewind features more than anything) and crosses it with the versatility of the Helix/Inno.Unlike the Helix and the Inno though, this unit has a bias towards car use, yet still gives you the option to be completely mobile (With the purchase of the antenna/headphone set). The Helix/Inno units, which are primarily for on-the-go usage, have a much smaller, yet more colorful screen than the SkyFi3, and also include a built in antenna for on-the-go Live XM feed without any extra accessories.

The SkyFi3 on the other hand, has a much bigger screen, though monochrome, that make viewing from afar much easier. Also, as stated above, unlike the Helix/Inno, this unit has the ability to pause and rewind live feed. It is the first of it's kind to accept MicroSD memory cards for your own music to be added to your playlists, giving you nearly unlimited storage. Be warned though, Recording Live XM feed is limited to the built in 256MB (~10 Hours). The only potential downfall this unit has over the Helix/Inno would be it's large size in comparison. Also, having such a large screen could potentially get scratched much easier. The SkyFi3 is significantly cheaper than the Inno/Helix and when bought through certain retailers, you are given a voucher to get the $50 Standard Wearable Kit for free.

As for the overall sound quality, as long as you are using the SureConnect or a direct wired connection to your car radio, quality is equal to any other XM unit (Of course, using a non-modulated method will be the absolute best). But if you attempt to use just straight up Wireless FM Transmitter, forget it.Total trash.I am going to assume the FCC forced Delphi to use a much lower power transmitter.I live in the Buffalo, NY area and I've gone through the entire FM band and couldn't find a single channel that even made it usable. The SureConnect kit that comes with the SkyFi3 is just a clip that connects to your AM/FM antenna on the outside of your car, then connects to a wire that plugs into your car kit. Make sure you use this unless you have another method of hard wiring the unit to your radio (either by FM Modulation of an Aux input port)

Sirius SR4000 Orbiter Receiver Satellite Radio Review

Sirius SR4000 Orbiter Receiver Satellite Radio

This is one of the older (to my knowledge) Sirius units.I've had mine 3+ years.They are bigger and clunkier than many of the new models, but to me with the larger display and button size it is far easier to use and preferable.I have 5 of these in my family and have not had trouble with any of them.Mine is used in my car on my daily commute and then taken into the office to be used all day in the compatible boombox.I've looked at the new ones and while they do appear a bit more slick and sophisticated, I've decided for now I'll keep what works very well for me. FYI - In two of our cars, I have the unit hidden out of sight in the center console with the antenna on the rear deck inside the car and it works well if you make certain the antenna has a good view of the sky.To me the trade off of a possible very slight degradation of performance is more than offset by the convenience of a totally inside the vehicle installation.

As mentioned in my other satellite radio reviews, I have both Sirius and XM and I like Sirius much more than the XM. I like the music channels on Sirius more and Sirius has much more exclusive programming. The Sportster receiver and boombox is great for satellite radio on the move. Great for bringing it outdoors to a park or the beach, whatever. The only thing that I wish this receiver had is the ability to record. The inability to record and the fact that the Sirius Orbiter boombox that I had sounded a little better when playing crisp sounding highs. Overall a great boombox, just make sure that you buy some 4500mAh nickel-metal hydride rechargeable batteries with it!

RCA RP2480 Portable CD/MP3 Player Review

RCA RP2480 Portable CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I collect public domain old time radio shows from Internet enthusiasts' websites, which feature many hundreds of shows from the 1930's and 40's.Most of these are taken from old noisy transcriptions or network shows, with limited audio fidelity, and are encoded as 'low' as 16 kilobits resolution.This model RCA is one of the few portables that I have found that will play even 16 kbs Mp3 files (the manual claims the file encoding must be at least 32, but I find that 16, 22, or 24 kb encoding also play just fine.) Unfortunately it is true -- as stated in the manual -- that WMA files have to be 64 kbs, which leaves out many OTR files, but as far as I know, few (perhaps no) portables handle 16 kbs WMA files, though computer software can do so.

I am a professional sound engineer of many years' experience so I have been mystified by the negative reports about this player, written by users who have had very bad luck with their units.I have not had almost any of the problems reported by others.It is such a reliable player that I am now looking for a second one, or perhaps a later RCA model, to augment it.I also own an RCA RCD-148 CD/Mp3 boombox, pretty much the same thing but in a larger cabinet with radio tuner, amp, and speakers -- and have found it, too, to work very reliably, and to play almost any Mp3 file I have on CD-R, with no skips or discontinuities.

Here are the "problems" allegedly experienced by other amateur reviewers:

1. Hiss at all times? This is absolutely NOT the case with mine.Using either the phones supplied, or other better quality ones, I don't hear any line out hiss.

2. Bad sound, worse than other units?Not so!If the equalizer is set for flat reproduction, the sound is equivalent on high quality classical music CDs in my collection to any of my other regular portable CD players.Mp3 files sound absolutely the same as played back thru my Windows' computers.

3. Skipping?Not so in my unit.It takes effort to make it skip: banging on the lid will do it but this is also true of my other half-dozen CD-only portables.It seems no more sensitive to shaking than my Sony or Panasonic CD portable units.

4. Playing part of a CD audio or MP3 track, then quitting? Well, this has never once happened to me in more than a year of use with thousands of tracks played, on either CDs or CDRs.

5. Terrible battery life?Not really; I find it rather close to the claim in the manual.With a brand new pair of high grade alkaline batteries I can usually listen to one or two half-hour old time radio shows daily FOR THREE WEEKS to A MONTH before the batteries need to be replaced.Battery drain may be reduced -- as I use the machine -- by using an external headphone amp and keeping the RCA's volume level on the low side.I employ an inexpensive Koss three-band external equalizer/headphone driver since its graphic equalizer sliders are easier and quicker to use than the programmable equalizer in the RCA player (and have more control range.)

6. Not audiophile sound quality?Perhaps this is partly true.I find that when playing my finest quality classical music audio CDs that the RCA player has a noticeable sampling artefact at the start and close of some tracks, especially on old CDs made without dither.This would suggest that the D-A conversion and filtering is imperfect and not absolutely linear at the lowest part of the dynamic range, where sound levels drop below (say) -45 to -55 dB.For example, my Panasonic SX-SL270 handles the "fade in from black" of the very faintest music tracks seamlessly, while the RCA 2480 produces -- for a few milliseconds -- a slight faint crackle/thud until consistent sample amplitudes are at an appreciable volume.This is not noticeable DURING THE ACTUAL MUSIC but in the 'dead zones' in lead in/lead out tracks; with normal music playing I cannot hear any sampling artefacts at all.I find this inconsequential, and it does not seem to happen at all on Mp3 tracks (or at least the ones I have on CD-R.)

7. Low volume?Not at all; with the headphones supplied, I found the volume level generally higher than my Sony players, and quite sufficient for the music and radio programs that I have on CD.I can only imagine that people who like to play back (say) rap, with a driving, intense, extremely low-frequency bass down to perhaps 30 or 40 Hz would not find the dynamic range and power output of either the RCA's internal amp, or supplied phones, satisfactory; but portables do not handle this type of program material as well as high powered car or home stereo equipment operated from much higher current power sources than two little AA cells!

8. Instructions unclear?As far as I'm concerned, the supplied manual was a model of clarity, and the actual functionality (though somewhat cumbersome at first) is quite logical once you absorb the idea of what to do, step by step.The display provides more information than any other portable I've seen, and the ability to search the root and directories of CD-Rs containing huge numbers of files is quite exemplary and straightforward.I think the average VCR is an order of magnitude more complicated and confusing than this little device!

9. Unreliable.That is not true of the unit that I purchased.It worked correctly from the instant I put in the batteries and first disk; it still works fine a year later after hundreds and hundreds of hours' use.

I can only assume that people who have found this unit to be entirely UNsatisfactory have failed to observe the following conditions:

a. They haven't read the instructions;
b. They are using lousy batteries; maybe even carbon-zinc cheapies;
c. Their CDs are in TERRIBLE shape;
d. They have allowed the unit to become very dirty, so that the lens is not clean and clear;
e. They have subjected it to some severe physical damage, or left it in 100-degree sun for hours at a time (which will dry up the tiny capacitors on the circuit board);
f. They work for COMPETING COMPANIES (!) and are publishing disinformation to discourage people from considering this product;
g. Or -- let's face it -- they just don't know what they're talking about, have ridiculous expectations, and are almost never satisfied.

For the record, I have been a salesman of high end audio, have designed professional recording equipment, and have many years' background as a recording and audio engineer.The RCA is one of my more satisfactory items of home electronics; I recommend it to people who have expectations of actually receiving a product that lives up pretty well to its published specs (if not pleasing ignoramuses and clumsy folks with lousy, damaged CDs and the expectations that a $60 battery-operated portable will operate and sound like a multi-thousand dollar AC-operated device.)
- 8H Haggis

Kenwood System-H2EC Sirius Here2Everywhere Satellite Radio Tuner with Car Docking Kit Review

Kenwood System-H2EC Sirius Here2Everywhere Satellite Radio Tuner with Car Docking Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose the Kenwood because of the look (sleek, blue screen) and reputation of their other products.This product does not live up to their standards.I was really disappointed, and here's why:
When I received the unit, I started with the in-home docking station.I hooked it up right away and basic set-up was easy.You'll know right away whether you can get a signal from the satellite on channel 184 before you subscribe.The instructions about antenna placement was clear... it needs a clear view toward the midwest.That was a problem in my house because of its layout, orientation, and trees on the property.The signal from the satellite was weak and cut out from time to time.The antenna wire was not long enough for my home layout--windows provided too weak a signal, and the roof was out of the question.Eventually, I moved everything around the house until I found a sweet spot.What an ordeal, already.
Second, the FM modulator was very weak.I tried to tune in my home stereo to the freq on the sirius and found that the sirius tuner had to be within one foot of my receiver to get any signal, and then it was weak. With the hard wires--the RCA plugs into AUX on the home stereo--sound was clear and loud.Music at last!
I tried the car kit, and found that the satellite reception was weak there too (here a signal, there a signal and in between... silence).It changed dramatically as I drove across town.The placement of the sirius unit in the car was critical. I tried it on the front of the dash, on the console, in the passenger seat, and all over the windshield.There was only one position in the car where the sirius could talk to the receiver, and that was low-center of the wind shield.Everywhere else was nothing but static.Even in this "sweet spot" I got a poor, static filled signal.Changing freq was easy, but didn't help.No problems with interference from other stations, since there are few in my area.
I was even disappointed with the display.The blue was nice, but the station info was more than could fit and the scrolling was distracting.Changing the setting for display size didn't help: there are two settings for the screen:big and really big.(Audiovox screen for example shows more info on one screen without the need to scroll).
My wife experienced how wonderful and trouble-free Sirius can be with an "older" Streamer, so I'm going to stick with this service and try a different tuner.
The Kenwood is going back.

iCraig Alarm Clock Stereo Radio- CMA3004 Review

iCraig Alarm Clock Stereo Radio- CMA3004

This product was purchased for my 11 yr old daughter to be used with her first i-Pod Nano.
Pros:Non I can think of at the moment.
Cons:Neon blue light is too bright and there's no dimmer switch...also the color scheme make the it difficult to read from any distance over 5 feet or so.Ours does not charge the i-POD as advertised.Sound is terrible...She gets better sound from her i-Dog.The alarm doesn't work...we set it for a time and the alarm either goes off minutes after the set time or it doesn't go off at all.The radio antenna...what's with the wire.I haven't seen that since the 80's.Why can't they make a better internal antenna?My clock radio doesn't have that and I get fantastic FM reception.All told, I would suggest selecting another brand or paying a little more and getting something better.

iMode Alarm Clock Radio iPod Docking Station (Black) Review

iMode Alarm Clock Radio iPod Docking Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was so excited to receive my iMode from my wife for Christmas 2008. All the main features seemed to work -- AM/FM Radio, iPod, Alarm Clock x 2 -- except the remote control. It comes with a battery. Since it didn't worked, I assumed it was drained and I replaced it with a new battery. It still didn't work. This was disappointing, because this was not a simple on/off remote. This remote allowed the user to complete EVERY function that can be done on the console of the iMode itself. This is a rare completely inclusive remote for the price.

I called the maker of iMode for a replacement remote since the product is under warranty. I was told to exchange it at the store for a new one (makes sense). I asked what to do if the store didn't have it, and Curtis told me to call them back for a remote. The store was indeed sold out of them, and was not planning on restocking after the holiday (holiday promotion). I called iMode maker back as requested. They told me that I must return it to the store, that the store must call iMode maker to explain that they sold a product with faulty remote, Curtis would then send the new remote to the store where I could pick it up. After all this above action taken, iMode maker told the store that the customer must request the remote under the warranty. I'm done...I left the iMode at the store and requested a full refund. I'm sad to write this review, since the product is potentially great (especially for the bang for the buck), but the low quality of the product and the low quality of the customer service and return policy/protocol, left me with the feeling of iMust Return My iMode.

For the money, not a bad product. The sound quality isn't bad at lower volumes -- not great at higher volumes. It's compact enough to sit on a corner of your desk and enables you to watch podcasts and videos on your ipod. Another bonus is that it charges.

Gpx PDL805 8.5 Inch Portable DVD Player Review

Gpx PDL805 8.5 Inch Portable DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this GPX brand portable dvd player a couple days ago and am so far satisfied.It does everything I expect it to.I would give this product 5 stars even were it not for one annoying feature, or rather the lack thereof.There is no menu button on the player itself!If you don't have the remote control or have lost it you won't be able to access the menu of your dvd while you're watching the feature.The only remedy I see to this is to skip to the very last chapter and fast forward to the very end forcing the menu to come up.But who wants to do this?I am a pretty responsible person and am anal about keeping the remote together with the player so this is not too big a problem for me given the remote continues to work.But I definitely see the potential for frustration.

Some things I like include the carrying case and the screen.The picture is pretty sharp, and the sound is decent.And I didn't expect there to be a carrying case in the box but it came with the player which is very nice.

So overall this product is okay.I don't regret buying it but if I knew of the menu button issue beforehand I definitely would've picked a similar player that had such a button ON the player.

And I don't use PAL discs so the player not being able to actually play those types of discs don't bother me one bit, false advertising or not.Too bad for that reviewer though.

The radio will not stay in contact with the power plug when seated in the cradle of the boombox, consequently the radio quits playing intermittently or won't play at all.This is my second one, I returned the first, and both had the same problem.Save yourself some grief and don't buy this.
