(More customer reviews)This (the CFD-G500) is the successor to the Sony CFD-G70.I own both.The sound of the CFD-G500 has better definition (is cleaner), is louder, and even has cleaner bass than the CFD-G70.It easily provides music for a water aerobics class that takes place in a swimming pool that is the size of a tennis court. (In fact, before being a pool, it was a tennis court.)

I had worried that the G500's sound would suffer from lack of separate tweeters, which the G70 does have.Not to worry.I don't know how Sony did it.

The G500 also has some improvement in the user interface (compared to the G70):the volume control have moved from the top to the front and is colored silver rather than the same color as the box itself, and Line-In is on top rather than at the bottom of the front.

Note that as I write this, Amazon's link named "Technical Data" is inaccurate in at least the following.Takes 8 batteries, not 6:Weighs 18 lbs with batteries (15.5 lbs without), not "7.25 with batteries," and its size is substantially larger than 15.25 x 6.5 x 10 inches.

In summary, this is the best-sounding battery-powered boombox that I've ever heard, and I've heard many boomboxes in the last 30 years.

Sony's CFD-G500 CD/radio cassette recorder offers a compact chassis, several sound-enhancement options, and remote-control convenience--not to mention an aggressive, black-and-red power-drive design. Stereo 4-inch speakers are augmented by a third, 4-inch Power Drive Woofer, all driven by a powerful 20 watts RMS total. The unit's CD player uses a one-bit digital-to-analog audio converter with 8x oversampling for pristine sound, and audio CD-R/CD-RW compatibility means the boombox will play your home-brewed music mixes as well as prerecorded CDs.
The CFD-G500's digital AM/FM stereo tuner offers 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM). Four electronic sound modes (rock/pop/jazz/vocal) let you tailor the sound for listening to various different types of music or in different environments, while the unit's unique Power Drive settings (off, 1, and 2) enhance low-frequencies in any sound mode. A cool red light atop the device indicates PDW-on status.
A remote control with 10-key direct-access buttons works for CD tracks and radio presets, while various CD play modes (program/shuffle/repeat) let you hear tracks in multiple ways: in sequence (as recorded), in program order (up to 20 tracks), all tracks in random (shuffle) order, or as a single track repeating over and over.
With synchronized CD/cassette dubbing, CD playback commences just after cassette recording begins. The stereo record/playback cassette deck provides direct recording from either the tuner, the CD player. Meanwhile, an analog minijack (.125-inch) stereo line input lets you hookup anything from your laptop to an MP3 player or a portable DVD player. The unit runs on the supplied AC power cord or six D batteries. The remote uses 2 AA batteries (no batteries are included).

(More customer reviews)I got this as a Christmas present for my boys the sound quality isn't very good at all and the cd player doesn't like to play disc that have any blemishes at all on them, even though my other cd players play them just fine. The good thing about this unit is that with the purchase of a cable you can connect an ipod or a mp3 player.

(More customer reviews)First, I took it out of box and I could sense something was wrong with the power cord. It jiggles where it plugs into machine, which causes machine to turn off. Could not get it right. I held the cord in place while I tried radio which is VERY poor quality: static, stations shift. I switched it to CD player (button felt like it might fall off!), it made a buzzing noise, displayed 1, blinked allot, then stopped itself. It never played. I tried this several times. No go. With the way the power cord was, I felt like I was doing a juggling act! I gave it one star only because I had to. I really give it NO STARS! So I packed it up and it's on its way back to Amazon. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT!!!!

(More customer reviews)I bought this CD player for it's size.We use it on our kitchen, where it fits nicely on a shelf.

Aside from being a space saver, there isn't much to say about this unit.It plays CDs fine and hasn't had any trouble playing discs I've burned using iTunes.Being able to see the disc spinning is kind of cool.

There are only two things I don't really like about this player: the AM/FM radio tuner and the volume control.The radio tuner is not digital, so you have to manually tune in a station every time you want to listen to the radio.It does seem to get pretty good reception though.The volume doesn't go up very high.Don't get me wrong, it's loud enough, it's just not loud enough for me to hear well from the other room.Of course, some might see this as a positive thing.

Overall, I would recommend this CD player if all you need are bare bones CD player functions.

(More customer reviews)I had my old Sony Boombox for 11 years & it finally gave out.I saw this one; it looked nice and had all the same basics as my old one.I needed a simple player & this one fit the bill.Many others look too "space age" to me.

When I got it, I put in a CD and it didn't sound like it had much bass.I turned on the Mega Bass & it didn't sound any different.At least with my old Sony you could tell when the Mega Bass was on.Because of the lack of bass I think it's an OK player.

I took my children to a local play gym/arcade, and they had the Sony CFD-F10 there.It sounded great!Sad to say, it makes me wish I did a little more comparing, the extra $10-$15 dollars seems worth it.
