Kanto SYD 5 Powered Speakers (Black) Review

Kanto SYD 5 Powered Speakers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
At 22 pounds and measuring 22 x 8 x 7.2 inches, the Kanto SYD5BLK I-Pod dock/speaker is not small or lightweight but neither is its sound (very good, rich and full) or its workmanship (beautiful, substance/heft with a gorgeous piano-black finish).Easy to plug in and use.Master volume on its backside.Remote control. You can also hook up a Zune but the remote is not compatible for changing songs (nor is the Kanto advertised for other systems).

Check out the product description for other specific details. The manual is small--not much to it.The front cover has a magnetic front protecting the speakers (or remove it exposing the speakers/see alternative photos on product page). The amazon packaging was excellent.

This sleek item arrived in perfect condition and we listened to tunes within moments.Sound is rich, full with no distortion at high volume. My husband's ear is finely tuned for sound quality and he is very impressed by the Kanto.

Haven't tried hooking it up to the computer or TV but see no reason this alternative use would be complex. If you've got the space, go for it.

The amazon product page photo doesn't do it justice if you're into electronics that are also beautiful...the Kanto SYD5BLK fits that billing. We are VERY VERY pleased!

This iPod speaker from Kanto adds a little sophistication to a product that's all too often made of cheap plastic. With a beautiful hand-crafted wood cabinet and a monster 80 watts of power, the SYD 5 blurs the line between iPod docks and home theater systems.

With a hand-crafted wood cabinet and 80 watts of power, the SYD 5 blurs the line between iPod docks and home theater systems. Click to enlarge.
Two full-range and two low-end drivers for 80 watts of maximum power.
Ported for added bass response; rear connectors include an AC plug, S-video output, and 3.5-mm/RCA aux inputs.
iPod Universal Dock
Charge your iPod while it's playing, and control the SYD 5 from across the room with the sleek remote control unit, which includes all the basics: volume, forward, back, mute, etc.

Video Output
If you have a video-enabled iPod, the S-video output lets you enjoy video on your television paired with the robust sound of the SYD 5.

Serious Sound
The SYD 5 design utilizes an acoustically tuned, hand-crafted MDF wood cabinet with bass reflex ports, for an acoustic richness you won't find in most tiny plastic docks.

A pair of full-range drivers and a pair of low drivers deliver 80 watts of maximum power, with a frequency response of 45 Hz to 20 kHz. Magnetic shielding suppresses interference from nearby electronic devices.

Simple Control
The SYD 5 keeps it simple, with a basic volume/source control on the unit itself. The rest of the unit features can be accessed via the included remote: iPod playback functions, EQ and mute, source, etc.

Connect It All
RCA and auxiliary inputs allow you to combine almost any stereo device with a plug that fits with these speakers. Laptop and desktop computers, both portable and home-bound CD and DVD players, and even other stereo systems can all be used effectively.

Rear AC Plug
Plug an Apple Airport Express directly into the back of the speakers, connect it to the auxiliary input, and you can stream audio from your iTunes on your computer directly to the speakers. No need for a docked iPod. Or use it to power a different device: MP3 players, etc.

What's in the Box
SYD 5 iPod speaker, remote control, power cable, S-video cable, dock inserts, and user's manual.

Atlantis Multi-Media System & Video Output for iPod - SF-1001 Review

Atlantis Multi-Media System & Video Output for iPod - SF-1001
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have tried the Altec Lansing iM600 firewire charging AND usb docking station, only to find out that my ipod touch 2nd generation does not work properly in it.I was very bummed out, as I had already had to return 2 other ipod docking stations!I found out that the iPod touch 2nd gen. is pretty much too new of a product for most of the current docking stations out there.Very few will actually charge the iPod touch 2 gen, and neither will this model.BUT,this was not my reason for purchasing the Atlantis. The Altec Lansing sounded pretty great, but was much more money and did not work for my iPod.I bought this at Sam's club for $29,so I don't know why it is listed on here for $169......but WOW it is a great deal for the price. The remote control is great, it has pretty powerful sound for a small boombox. It does not have a rechargeable battery in it, but I will rarely take it with me anywhere. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS
1. GREAT VALUE!!
2. GREAT SOUND,NO CRACKLING, FOR A SMALL SPEAKER IT PUTS OUT SOME GOOD SOUND.
3.SOUND FILLS MY KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM.
4. REMOTE CONTROL IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND CONTROLS THE IPOD SONGS TOO
5. CAN PLUG IN USB OR SD CARD INTO PORT AND WILL PLAY MP3'S AS WELL
6. ALARM WILL TURN ON WITH IPOD AND SOUND STARTS GRADUALLY WHEN ALARM GOES OFF, SO YOU ARE NOT JOLTED OUT OF BED WITH A LOUD SOUND SUDDENLY
7. VOLUME WILL DEFINITELY GO REALLY LOW TO SILENT IF YOU WANT SO THAT YOU CAN FALL ASLEEP---ALSO HAS SLEEP MODE IF YOU LIKE TO FALL ASLEEP TO MUSIC SOFTLY

CONS
1. TAKES BATTERIES IF NOT PLUGGED IN.DOES NOT HAVE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK
2. MAY NOT SOUND AS GOOD AS A BOSE OR HIGHER END MODEL, BUT DEFINITELY SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE IHOME CLOCK MODELS, AND AS GOOD AS MOST $150 MODELS.
3. IF YOU LIKE TO BLAST YOUR MUSIC, THIS MAY NOT HAVE THE GREAT SPEAKER QUALITY TO DO SO WITHOUT BLOWING THE SPEAKERS, BUT IF YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO LOUD OR MODERATELY LOUD MUSIC THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT.
4. WILL NOT CHARGE IPOD TOUCH 2ND GEN ON THIS MODEL

I COULD PROBABLY LIST MANY MORE PROS!!!BEST $29 I SPENT

MTX Audio iThunder Portable iPod Boombox (Black) Review

MTX Audio iThunder Portable iPod Boombox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this boom box thinking that it will sound almost like the hi-fi, just because the brand (mtx) and how god are their car speakers and subwoofers. But I'm a little disappointed, it sounds god, but when you put in high volume the speakers sounds with distortion. The bass is to strong, you must equalize your ipod to bass reducer or treble booster.
Conclusion: don't buy it if you want excellent sound quality, if you want that buy a hi-hi (I already did it) if you don't care about it and don't want to spend that kind of money I think is the best choice.

This seems like a nice product, except for the fact that it is an older model that has been discontinued by iHome and is not compatible with my 5th generation iPod nano. This would have been helpful information when making a decision on which boombox I wanted to go with my new nano.

Kicker iK501 Digital Stereo System for iPhone and iPod (Black) Review

Kicker iK501 Digital Stereo System for iPhone and iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A friend of mine bought one of the high dollar BOSE iPod systems which I found very impressive, and which my wife became enamored with. I, however, was not inclined to spend $500+ on a boombox, refined or not.

The Kicker iK501 is actually a bit bigger than the BOSE, and sounds quite good. On the down side, it doesn't sound quite as refined as the BOSE, and if you want to use it outside, you don't have the rechargeable battery thing that the BOSE includes. The iKicker only works plugged in to the wall using its' "brick" in-line power supply. You don't get battery operation - or battery woes - with the iKicker. Both Bose and the Kicker sound very clear and have the "good-car-stereo-sound-in-a-box" thing down pat.

The iKicker has deeper and louder bass than the Bose. I haven't measured it, but my ear is pretty good from listening to high end stereos over the years, and I suspect that the Bose system is probably better EQed for smooth, flat frequency response and there is clearly some level dependent EQ going on that I suspect is tweaked to match the human ear at various volume levels. After all, that's how Bose made their bread-and-butter with the 901s 40 years ago: Dr. Bose's little speakers sounded fantastic with the equalizer before the power amp in the circuit turned on, and lame as all get out without the electronic equalization.

The Bose has no tone controls at all: the iKicker has Treble and Bass that you can adjust to taste and volume level to get a ***VERY*** good sound, which is fairly comparable to the Bose. Listening to acoustic music through either system is great. The iKicker sounds clear and not overly colored by the speakers, although I do think the Bose is a tad more "neutral" sounding, which may or may not be good depending on your taste. For Rock and Roll, I think the sound of the iKicker is actually a bit better than the Bose, and although I'm not into it, I'm sure the hip-hop crowd would think the Bose is lame by comparison for that genre. The iKicker has a passive radiator on the back driven by the woofers to augment the bass, and you can hear and feel it working. The midrange is clear and well-defined. Crisp highs make the high hat sound like it's in the room. And did I mention the iKicker can get LOUDER than the Bose? It can probably keep up with most house party crowds; I doubt the Bose could cut it.

I use a 4th generation iPod Nano with it, and the remote control works the Nano as best I can tell, although I haven't really spent the time to figure out the iPod OS in great detail. But it does all the basics if you are too lazy to get up off the couch. It has a blue display to help you make adjustments to volume, tone, balance... the usual suspects.

But the *really* big plus over the Bose is the PRICE, WAY less than half of the cheaper Bose, and less than a third of the good one. I think I got it for around $165, IIRC, which I thought was within reason for a **very** nice boombox that can keep up with the "big stereo" in most of my friends' living rooms. Of course you have to add the cost of the iPod to that, but you end up with a great-sounding jukebox you can move around without much hassle that will play *all* your music without the hassle of changing CDs, and with NO fragile, dangley cord attachments. The only dangley part of the iKicker is the power supply brick, which is pretty substantial and looks sturdy. No puny connectors or chords. The iPod plugs right in in the front just like the Bose system. Construction looks solid.

I don't think anyone could be all that unhappy with either system. But for my money - and I LIKE good sound systems - the iKicker makes more sense.

Full-Range Sound
5-inch woofers and 3/4-inch tweeters fill your room with premium full-range sound quality.
Wireless Remote
Dig deeper into DSP with the thin infrared remote, fully featured to fine-tune the iPod or iPhone's music and video content. It helps to navigate with ease through the iK501 system menu, adjusting bass, treble, and aux-in options, as well as through the iPod or iPhone's menus and sub-menus. Skip forward and back, fast-forward and back, play and pause, volume, mute, and power on/off selections have their own buttons too.
Rotary Control Knob
The rotary knob manually serves as the power and selection push button, and controller for bass, treble, auxiliary-input options, or standby mode. Standby will continue to charge the iPod or iPhone even when the system is powered down. In the dark, the knob is back-lit in blue and the display LCD screen continues to steer the user easily through the menu.
Auxiliary Input
The 1/8-inch auxiliary stereo input allows you to connect additional media sources for richer, louder sound. Hook up MP3 or CD players, desktop and laptop computers, satellite radio, or anything else you want to amplify.
RCA Outputs
RCA stereo outputs allow for even more audio hookup, and a composite video output allows you to pass video from your iPod to a TV or monitor.

The dock works with all iPod models, including the iPod touch and any featuring a click wheel. It is also "Works with iPhone" certified.

The convenient carry handle maximizes portability.

Panasonic SC-HC20 Compact Stereo System Review

Panasonic SC-HC20 Compact Stereo System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was looking for an IPOD dock and found so much more in this little stereo system. I couldn't find any reviews on this but I own other Panasonic products and thought I'd give it a try and am glad I did. It has a recharging dock/player for an IPOD or IPhone, a CD player, a radio and a clock! Its sleek and good-lookin', small enough to fit on my dresser but has the power to send music throughout my second floor. I'm very picky when it comes to sound and was kind of worried that since I didn't spend over $100 that I wasn't going to be able to find something with great sound but this doesn't disappoint! Clear and crisp - I've heard layers of music on this that I don't hear from my bigger, much more expensive stereo system. This is a great little multi-tasker!

Altec Lansing inMotion MIX iMT800 Portable Digital Boom Box for iPhone and iPod Review

Altec Lansing inMotion MIX iMT800 Portable Digital Boom Box for iPhone and iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own the Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) and I was very surprised at how much better the iMT800 sounds. I will admit that for the price difference you should be able to expect better sound...and you can. The iMT 800 sounds very good - about on the same level as a nice rack stereo system. The high notes are crisp and there is strong continuity all the way down to bass. While the bass is not overly deep (effective to 50-60Hz would be my guess) it is more than adequate - the iMT800 does not sound punchy at all - instead the entire frequency response range is nice and smooth. I was very impressed.

Other Features

- Comes with 5 different adapters to ensure that any model of iPod will work. In my video review I show an iPhone (2nd G), and iPod Touch (2nd G) and an older Video iPod and they all fit nicely onto the iPod Dock.

- As you would expect the iPod dock will charge your iPod.

- One very nice feature is that when the iMT800 is used with an iPhone it will automatically silence the music when you receive a call - in fact, the ring tone is played at full volume over the Boom Box speakers! (Shown in the video)

- Decent remote - it would be a bit nicer with digital display - but it probably isn't worth the extra $$$.

- While it is not rechargeable you can use the iMT800 with D batteries - which makes it perfect for taking to the beach, park, or wherever.

- Plenty of volume to fill large areas

- It comes equipped with a FM radio and the ability to program in four presets (I will admit that 4 presets is a bit meager).

- 2 auxiliary inputs - this means that you can plug anything that has a headphone jack into the iMT 800 - this includes iPod shuffles (as seen in the video), CD players, tape decks, computers, Squeezeboxs... you name it- if it has a headphone jack it can be played on the iMT800. In fact, up to three devices can be hooked in at once (And then you can toggle through the inputs)

- Not too heavy - about 13 pounds so it can moved without too much effort

Areas for improvement

- Not the most attractive looking speaker unit. Not a problem for me - but this may not look at home on a walnut bookcase (or any nicer looking decor). This unit is designed for indoor/outdoor functionality - style was left at the door (or at least partially).

-It would be nice if it was rechargeable - it would add cost, but it may be worth it... however, there is nothing that would prevent you from buying rechargeable batteries!

- The display - could be made larger... and a full color display would have been a nice upgrade.

Final verdict -

I know I listed several areas for improvement, but in truth they are very minor points. The biggest factor is that this is a great sounding speaker dock - and it sounds significantly better than the less expensive Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker for iPod and iPhone (Black) so if great sound is your requirement you can buy with confidence!

5 Stars
