Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM - Speaker system Review

Cambridge SoundWorks PlayDock XM - Speaker system
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for a great sounding powered speaker for your Roady, and don't plan to move it around very often, this could be just what you're looking for.The sound quality is very good, even at low volume levels. The sound is clear, with good range.

Battery life is about 8 to 10 hours, depending on volume level. The Playdock powers itself off automatically to extend battery life after the Roady has been off for five minutes.Unfortunately, there is no battery gauge.

But the PlayDock weighs enough that most of us won't be moving it around very often. Most people will probably leave it plugged in most of the time.If you're looking for a portable unit, keep in mind that the PlayDock weighs about as much as a bowling ball (I haven't weighed it, but I'd estimate around 15 pounds).

The controls are simple. The only controls are a power button, volume, mute and a "wide" button.Although the sound is well balanced, I was surprised to find no bass/treble controls. And a battery gauge of some kind would be nice.

Pro's:
Very good sound quality
Battery Life
Simplicity

Con's
Heavy!
No battery gauge

If you're willing to sacrafice weight for sound quality, I recommend the PlayDock.

iMode Alarm Clock Radio iPod Docking Station (Black) Review

iMode Alarm Clock Radio iPod Docking Station
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was so excited to receive my iMode from my wife for Christmas 2008. All the main features seemed to work -- AM/FM Radio, iPod, Alarm Clock x 2 -- except the remote control. It comes with a battery. Since it didn't worked, I assumed it was drained and I replaced it with a new battery. It still didn't work. This was disappointing, because this was not a simple on/off remote. This remote allowed the user to complete EVERY function that can be done on the console of the iMode itself. This is a rare completely inclusive remote for the price.

I called the maker of iMode for a replacement remote since the product is under warranty. I was told to exchange it at the store for a new one (makes sense). I asked what to do if the store didn't have it, and Curtis told me to call them back for a remote. The store was indeed sold out of them, and was not planning on restocking after the holiday (holiday promotion). I called iMode maker back as requested. They told me that I must return it to the store, that the store must call iMode maker to explain that they sold a product with faulty remote, Curtis would then send the new remote to the store where I could pick it up. After all this above action taken, iMode maker told the store that the customer must request the remote under the warranty. I'm done...I left the iMode at the store and requested a full refund. I'm sad to write this review, since the product is potentially great (especially for the bang for the buck), but the low quality of the product and the low quality of the customer service and return policy/protocol, left me with the feeling of iMust Return My iMode.

For the money, not a bad product. The sound quality isn't bad at lower volumes -- not great at higher volumes. It's compact enough to sit on a corner of your desk and enables you to watch podcasts and videos on your ipod. Another bonus is that it charges.

First off, this is a great quality cable. Marketing a 7ft cable to Zune users in their car doesn't make any sense. If this was 3-4ft cable (I mean, how far away do you sit back from your dash??), it would be perfect. Buy a cheaper (and shorter) mini-stereo to mini-stereo cable!

Emerson iTone iP100 Portable Sound System for iPods (White) Review

Emerson iTone iP100 Portable Sound System for iPods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
So, I happened along this item, and thought "gee this looks cool and is a good price."I have been looking for one of these systems for my ipod, but have felt that they were too expensive.Natually, when I saw that this was under $50, I could not resist. Boy I sure should have! The item itself looks nice, and it is very easy to use, but the sound SUCKS!!No, I don't expect Bose sound, but I would'nt expect heavy distortion!Yes, as I listened to music, what accompanied it was a constant buzzing and humming sound.I found that the only way to make the sound to go away was to set the ipod backlight to be on all of the time!Besides the humming, the sound would "crackle" if you touched the unit while it was in use.The loud humming and distortion was louder than the music.I had to crank up the volume to almost maxium setting to overpower the distortion!I returned mine, got a refund, and bought the JBL Portable Sound System (totally awsome!!!)I guess you get what you pay for; so please heed my warning, and stay faw away from this product.

Sony ICF-M1000 Table Top Radio Review

Sony ICF-M1000 Table Top Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This radio from Sony is placed to compete with similar products from Tivoli (Henry Kloss Model One) and Boston Acoustics (Receptor Radio). All of these products are single speaker (mono) AM/FM radios that contain no CD or cassette players and have no remote control. If that is not what you are looking for in a radio, this product is not for you; however, if you are looking for a simple tabletop radio, continue on.

Sony hoped to cash in on the popularity of simple table radios, however their offering falls short of its competitors. The radio is gloss black with a black fabric front that hides the speaker. It is significantly larger than the other radios in this class, about double the size of either the Kloss or the Receptor. Despite the size of the cabinet, the speaker is roughly the same size as those found on the other radios. The LCD display is small and somewhat hard to read from certain angles (there is an acrylic prism sitting on top of the LCD that reflects the image forward and upward). There are three knobs on the front that control tuning, volume and tone. The radio is built well, but I think the black fabric makes it seem a bit cheap. Removing the fabric cover exposes the cheap wood interior and lowers the aesthetics even further.

By itself this radio has a decent sound, and the tone control allows for tweaking of the sound quality. However when I compare the sound quality to that of the Kloss and Receptor, this product again falls short. This radio lacked the bass response of its competitors, despite its much larger size. Midranges were decent, comparable to the others (talk radio sounds almost the same among the three radios). Trebles were decent, although slightly muddled unless the tone control was set to high. On the plus side, the tuning was accurate and the reception clear, probably the best of the three, although all are very good.

The Sony radio has line-out/line-in 1/8" jacks in the rear for connecting to an mp3 or CD player (as does the Kloss, but not the receptor). There are no alarm-clock functions on this radio, which further limits its usefulness.

In conclusion, this would be a very decent radio if it were fifty dollars. However, Sony has set the price so that it competes with radios that are far superior to it. If you are to spend this kind of money on a table radio, I suggest you look elsewhere (I recommend the Receptor Radio).

Fisher Price Kid Tough FP3 Song & Story Player - Pink Review

Fisher Price Kid Tough FP3 Song & Story Player - Pink
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this for my 5 year-old for her birthday. She absolutely loves it and mastered the operation within minutes.Downloading stories from the website was a little tricky, but in the end was worth the time ($1.99 for most stories).Copying songs from CDs was the best feature. You can pick and delete the songs you want. You can even assign a picture to each song or to a collection of songs. For example, for High School Musical, I assigned a school bus; for the Aquamarine soundtrack, a starfish; Princess and the Pauper, a princess.Anyway, you get the idea. She also really likes the story reading function.I look forward to trying out the speaker/boom box accessory. The headphones seemed bulky to me, but my 5 year old loves how they fit and they don't slide off of her head!

I gave it 5 stars even though we had to return the first one.The play/pause button didn't work consistently, even right out of the box.It is marketed as a "kid tough" design, but we may have just had a bad player, as the replacement one seems to work fine, even after dropping it a few times.I also recommend the blue case; the pink one is very pale pink and all of the ones in store were already scuffed up and dirty.

Harman Kardon Go + Play Portable Speakers System with Dock for iPod (Black/Silver) Review

Harman Kardon Go + Play Portable Speakers System with Dock for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pros:

Best sounding ipod dock under $500. PERIOD!!!!!

Phenomenally deep and **REFINED** bass for something the size of a toaster.

Bass is definitely NOT the only thing this does well. It's performance on the full audio spectrum (yes, that's midrange too) is also best in it's class!

It's portable!!

(*Cons listed at the end... where they belong)First off I have to address the price issue.I, for the most part, think that the "made for Ipod" logo is license to over price.Almost no Ipod dock is truly worth it's price and I believe for what they do and what they sound like, the are **ALL** over-priced.

That being said, amongst the myriad of overpriced ipod docks, this one is THE ***MOST WORTHY*** OF IT'S PRICE TAG.

Compared to all of the other premium ipod docks this one is amazing. I can say that with confidence because I shopped around for MONTHS before I settled on this one.The only dock that sounds better in this price range is the Geneva Lab Model M which cost $499 (also worth it), which is NOT portable.(little do most consumers know, there are ipod docks that now cost up to $5,000 and more!!!)

The sound out of this thing is so very refined and robust when compared to any ipod dock you would find at the Apple store or any bigbox retailer. They only way you can find anything better is to look at items sold on-line (Geneva Lab) or at very High-End retailers. There probably is no other 'portable' dock that sounds any better. But don't let the word 'portable' fool you.It sounds the best when compared to ANY dock.

I was very surprised at how great this sounds in a noisy Apple store, but wait until you get it home!

WARNING:If you plan on using this thing in a small room with four walls it's Bass may be a bit too strong for you!DO NOT mistake this for BOOMYbass. There's just A LOT of strong deep bass, and BOY IS IT WAAAAYYYY DEEP for something that is about the sizeof a large toaster!!!Instead of boomy crappy bass, in a small room, this just sounds like you have a nice expensive subwoofer in a very nice home theater set turned up a bit too high. This is NOT a problem if you like a lot of bass, as it isn't for me.

What separates the Go + Play from other docks is that it's not just good at Bass (it's better than all of the others at that, by the way), but it's great at the full audio spectrum. It actually has a strong midrange presentation and really nice highs/treble as well. So many other ipod docks (as well the entire BOSE product line) impress consumers with largeamounts of bass (notice I didn't say good bass) and simply decent performance on the rest of the audio spectrum.By the way, this is probably the only dock that actually gets up to 20,000 Hz (20kHz), for those of you who know what this means.Do not expect that out of the Bose, Altech Lansing or Apple docks.

I would definitely say that this is the Audiophile's Ipod Dock in this price range for sure!!!! (if an audiophile would ever, first of all use an ipod and then use an 'ipod sound dock' at all).

I must mention a con or two.

#1 -YOu will not get the same amazing sound with this is operating on it's battery power. This is VERY VERY loud when plugged in, but the volume is limited when unplugged (still no distortion, however). The bass extension and quantity is also, noticeably, cut by about 1/2.I am sure this is done in order to have it last 18 hours on the 8 D batteries as advertise (it actually does last a very long time by the way). Make no mistake though, you still get a ton of bass for something you can carry around in your hand anywhere. You're peers will still be impressed .Note that nothing else is lost. It's treble and midrange performance remains the same.

#2Your ipod faces up when docked in this dock and you cannot see the screen from afar. This is not a problem me, but may be for others.I tend to just make large play lists and have play in "shuffle" mode anyway.

#3.The remote is fragile.

Polk Audio miDock Studio iPod Speaker System (Black/White) Review

I purchased this product to play my ipod at home, and man, does it DELIVER!! I could NOT be more pleased!! It took about 1 minute to set up, and start enjoying the fabulous sound we've come to expect from Polk Audio. It even has a clever holster for the remote on the back.

If you're looking for something to take around with you, this may be too heavy. It's certainly easily transportable around the home, but I wouldn't want to walk around with it like a boom box. Polk makes smaller units for portability. But, if you're looking for an OUTSTANDING home docking station, this one is worth every penny and more.

Best $$ I spent since I bought the ipod...I'd give it 10 stars if I could!!!

iPod / iPhone Building Block Portable Speaker - Pink Review

iPod / iPhone Building Block Portable Speaker - Pink

I purchased the first generation 16GB iPod Touch when Amazon had it on sale because it was a really good price, and I didn't feel like the extra features of the second generation Touch (volume control and internal speaker and slight redesign) were worth paying $100 more for the same capacity.I already had an external headphone jack-type speaker for my iPod classic, but I wasn't happy with the way it worked with the Touch. In my search for a different speaker that used the dock connector instead of the headphone jack, I stumbled on this little Lego-block style speaker and thought it was adorable.I wasn't expecting much for the sound, but I was pleasantly surprised. To me, the sound is not at all tinny or distorted, and it gets pretty loud. There are other, basic dock-connecting speakers out there, but this one is much cuter. It serves my purpose in allowing me to listen to videos, music, or audio books when I don't want to use my headphones.

JBL OnTour Portable Music Box Review

JBL OnTour Portable Music Box

Impressive sound compared to other portables.I have a set of Wharfedale Loudman's used for 2 years. They're good value for the $40 I paid, but the "On Tour" has much more "depth"The sound is pure, rich, "on" I've listened to some of the more expensive portable alternatives and didn't think they beat the LoudMan's so didn't buy.Took a chance on these based on a review and the brand name.Doesn't have boom box volume, won't blow you out of the room, but there's plenty of volume without setting on max.And even on max setting, there's no sense that you're on the edge of distortion.

They're heavier than I expected, just less than 14 oz, exceptionally well made, sized more like a hip flask than the 'glasses' case described in one review. This isn't for your pocket, but OK for a brief case or tucked in the corner of a suitcase.I use mine in small group meetings and on travel.

The folks who designed this created a winner.

Share your music while on the road with the Harman JBL on Tour portable speaker system, which features an integrated protective cover that slides open to reveal a pair of full-range speakers. The slightly curved chassis measures 7 by 1.4 by 3.5 inches (W x H x D) when closed. When open, the cover shifts focus to serve as a stand, pointing the speakers upward to produce optimal sound on a flat surface. The system is compatible with most portable audio players thanks to its stereo mini-jack connection, which hooks up to such devices as the iPod, iPod mini, and a variety of other MP3 players, CD players, desktop computers, and laptops. The JBL on Tour is also easy to control, with a touch volume pad that both manages the volume and mutes the sound when desired. The speakers also remember the previous volume setting once the system shuts down.
Unlike many portable speaker systems, the JBL on Tour prides itself on its steady bass and clear, accurate audio. The device employs Harman's digital amplifier technology and Odyssey aluminum-domed transducers to deliver a full, rich frequency response that extends from low bass notes to high-end tones. In addition, the system uses computer-optimized equalization to improve the soundstage and an advanced energy management system that keeps the unit from wasting battery power during use. Additional features include gripping rubber feet below the speakers, an audio input cable, and a universal AC adapter. When used as a portable system, the JBL on Tour provides more than 24 hours of continuous play on four AAA batteries. The device also includes a low battery alert.

I have tried the Altec Lansing iM600 firewire charging AND usb docking station, only to find out that my ipod touch 2nd generation does not work properly in it.I was very bummed out, as I had already had to return 2 other ipod docking stations!I found out that the iPod touch 2nd gen. is pretty much too new of a product for most of the current docking stations out there.Very few will actually charge the iPod touch 2 gen, and neither will this model.BUT,this was not my reason for purchasing the Atlantis. The Altec Lansing sounded pretty great, but was much more money and did not work for my iPod.I bought this at Sam's club for $29,so I don't know why it is listed on here for $169......but WOW it is a great deal for the price. The remote control is great, it has pretty powerful sound for a small boombox. It does not have a rechargeable battery in it, but I will rarely take it with me anywhere. Here are the pros and cons:
PROS
1. GREAT VALUE!!
2. GREAT SOUND,NO CRACKLING, FOR A SMALL SPEAKER IT PUTS OUT SOME GOOD SOUND.
3.SOUND FILLS MY KITCHEN AND LIVING ROOM.
4. REMOTE CONTROL IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND AND CONTROLS THE IPOD SONGS TOO
5. CAN PLUG IN USB OR SD CARD INTO PORT AND WILL PLAY MP3'S AS WELL
6. ALARM WILL TURN ON WITH IPOD AND SOUND STARTS GRADUALLY WHEN ALARM GOES OFF, SO YOU ARE NOT JOLTED OUT OF BED WITH A LOUD SOUND SUDDENLY
7. VOLUME WILL DEFINITELY GO REALLY LOW TO SILENT IF YOU WANT SO THAT YOU CAN FALL ASLEEP---ALSO HAS SLEEP MODE IF YOU LIKE TO FALL ASLEEP TO MUSIC SOFTLY

CONS
1. TAKES BATTERIES IF NOT PLUGGED IN.DOES NOT HAVE RECHARGEABLE BATTERY PACK
2. MAY NOT SOUND AS GOOD AS A BOSE OR HIGHER END MODEL, BUT DEFINITELY SOUNDS BETTER THAN THE IHOME CLOCK MODELS, AND AS GOOD AS MOST $150 MODELS.
3. IF YOU LIKE TO BLAST YOUR MUSIC, THIS MAY NOT HAVE THE GREAT SPEAKER QUALITY TO DO SO WITHOUT BLOWING THE SPEAKERS, BUT IF YOU LIKE TO LISTEN TO LOUD OR MODERATELY LOUD MUSIC THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT.
4. WILL NOT CHARGE IPOD TOUCH 2ND GEN ON THIS MODEL

I COULD PROBABLY LIST MANY MORE PROS!!!BEST $29 I SPENT

Vestalife Ladybug Portable Speaker Dock for iPod (Red) Review

Vestalife Ladybug Portable Speaker Dock for iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this excellent product. I like it so much I take it back and fourth with me to work everyday. I grew up poor but happy and now that I am on my own, I like to make sure I am getting my moneys worth of anything I buy. This ipod dock may be small but don't underestimate its high quality and simple design because of its size!

I compose music and am acutely aware of the tonal frequencies when listening to my music in different speakers. These speakers are extremely high quality and have a surprisingly full spectrum of sound. The high end frequencies (5k-20k hrtz) are crisp and clear and the low end frequencies such as the bass (80-140) and even a minute portion of sub the bass (40-79) comes through very nicely. I was really surprised and just sat there looking at these little speakers in amazement the first time I plugged in my ipod.

The handy remote makes it so convenient while at work, I don't have to get up and go over to the cabinet across the room when I get a call or some one stops by my office. The remote also accesses menu options on your ipod! I can find a new play list, choose to shuffle or repeat with the remote!!! Sometimes during lunch when I am out at the coffee shop with free wifi, I drain my ipod battery by downloading new apps or movies. Plugging in my ipod to this dock charges it back up!

I have to admit, I did not have to purchase this because I won it as a bingo prize. Had I walked past this little thing in a store I would not have given it a chance but now owning it for a week now, I absolutely love it! It is worth the money they are charging on Amazon!
It is an extremely high quality product!

I may even add a video response for this product later...

i.Sound Portable Speakers & Dock 4x - Black (DGUN-173) Review

i.Sound Portable Speakers & Dock 4x - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Folds up nicely for packing in a carry-on.Plays any device with an iPod-style earphone jack.Sounds good on the desk (it actually sounds better than the price might indicate).Does not charge any iPod, so the device drains power while playing.Great for travel and temporary use, poor for bedroom or work.

Note:the photo does not show you that the power and audio cables stick out the top of the unit, making it appear very messy while in use.Even while operating on batteries, the audio cable still sticks out the top, because that's where the port is on the iPod.
