RCA RP2480 Portable CD/MP3 Player Review

RCA RP2480 Portable CD/MP3 Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I collect public domain old time radio shows from Internet enthusiasts' websites, which feature many hundreds of shows from the 1930's and 40's.Most of these are taken from old noisy transcriptions or network shows, with limited audio fidelity, and are encoded as 'low' as 16 kilobits resolution.This model RCA is one of the few portables that I have found that will play even 16 kbs Mp3 files (the manual claims the file encoding must be at least 32, but I find that 16, 22, or 24 kb encoding also play just fine.) Unfortunately it is true -- as stated in the manual -- that WMA files have to be 64 kbs, which leaves out many OTR files, but as far as I know, few (perhaps no) portables handle 16 kbs WMA files, though computer software can do so.

I am a professional sound engineer of many years' experience so I have been mystified by the negative reports about this player, written by users who have had very bad luck with their units.I have not had almost any of the problems reported by others.It is such a reliable player that I am now looking for a second one, or perhaps a later RCA model, to augment it.I also own an RCA RCD-148 CD/Mp3 boombox, pretty much the same thing but in a larger cabinet with radio tuner, amp, and speakers -- and have found it, too, to work very reliably, and to play almost any Mp3 file I have on CD-R, with no skips or discontinuities.

Here are the "problems" allegedly experienced by other amateur reviewers:

1. Hiss at all times? This is absolutely NOT the case with mine.Using either the phones supplied, or other better quality ones, I don't hear any line out hiss.

2. Bad sound, worse than other units?Not so!If the equalizer is set for flat reproduction, the sound is equivalent on high quality classical music CDs in my collection to any of my other regular portable CD players.Mp3 files sound absolutely the same as played back thru my Windows' computers.

3. Skipping?Not so in my unit.It takes effort to make it skip: banging on the lid will do it but this is also true of my other half-dozen CD-only portables.It seems no more sensitive to shaking than my Sony or Panasonic CD portable units.

4. Playing part of a CD audio or MP3 track, then quitting? Well, this has never once happened to me in more than a year of use with thousands of tracks played, on either CDs or CDRs.

5. Terrible battery life?Not really; I find it rather close to the claim in the manual.With a brand new pair of high grade alkaline batteries I can usually listen to one or two half-hour old time radio shows daily FOR THREE WEEKS to A MONTH before the batteries need to be replaced.Battery drain may be reduced -- as I use the machine -- by using an external headphone amp and keeping the RCA's volume level on the low side.I employ an inexpensive Koss three-band external equalizer/headphone driver since its graphic equalizer sliders are easier and quicker to use than the programmable equalizer in the RCA player (and have more control range.)

6. Not audiophile sound quality?Perhaps this is partly true.I find that when playing my finest quality classical music audio CDs that the RCA player has a noticeable sampling artefact at the start and close of some tracks, especially on old CDs made without dither.This would suggest that the D-A conversion and filtering is imperfect and not absolutely linear at the lowest part of the dynamic range, where sound levels drop below (say) -45 to -55 dB.For example, my Panasonic SX-SL270 handles the "fade in from black" of the very faintest music tracks seamlessly, while the RCA 2480 produces -- for a few milliseconds -- a slight faint crackle/thud until consistent sample amplitudes are at an appreciable volume.This is not noticeable DURING THE ACTUAL MUSIC but in the 'dead zones' in lead in/lead out tracks; with normal music playing I cannot hear any sampling artefacts at all.I find this inconsequential, and it does not seem to happen at all on Mp3 tracks (or at least the ones I have on CD-R.)

7. Low volume?Not at all; with the headphones supplied, I found the volume level generally higher than my Sony players, and quite sufficient for the music and radio programs that I have on CD.I can only imagine that people who like to play back (say) rap, with a driving, intense, extremely low-frequency bass down to perhaps 30 or 40 Hz would not find the dynamic range and power output of either the RCA's internal amp, or supplied phones, satisfactory; but portables do not handle this type of program material as well as high powered car or home stereo equipment operated from much higher current power sources than two little AA cells!

8. Instructions unclear?As far as I'm concerned, the supplied manual was a model of clarity, and the actual functionality (though somewhat cumbersome at first) is quite logical once you absorb the idea of what to do, step by step.The display provides more information than any other portable I've seen, and the ability to search the root and directories of CD-Rs containing huge numbers of files is quite exemplary and straightforward.I think the average VCR is an order of magnitude more complicated and confusing than this little device!

9. Unreliable.That is not true of the unit that I purchased.It worked correctly from the instant I put in the batteries and first disk; it still works fine a year later after hundreds and hundreds of hours' use.

I can only assume that people who have found this unit to be entirely UNsatisfactory have failed to observe the following conditions:

a. They haven't read the instructions;
b. They are using lousy batteries; maybe even carbon-zinc cheapies;
c. Their CDs are in TERRIBLE shape;
d. They have allowed the unit to become very dirty, so that the lens is not clean and clear;
e. They have subjected it to some severe physical damage, or left it in 100-degree sun for hours at a time (which will dry up the tiny capacitors on the circuit board);
f. They work for COMPETING COMPANIES (!) and are publishing disinformation to discourage people from considering this product;
g. Or -- let's face it -- they just don't know what they're talking about, have ridiculous expectations, and are almost never satisfied.

For the record, I have been a salesman of high end audio, have designed professional recording equipment, and have many years' background as a recording and audio engineer.The RCA is one of my more satisfactory items of home electronics; I recommend it to people who have expectations of actually receiving a product that lives up pretty well to its published specs (if not pleasing ignoramuses and clumsy folks with lousy, damaged CDs and the expectations that a $60 battery-operated portable will operate and sound like a multi-thousand dollar AC-operated device.)

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman Review

Sony D-NE510 ATRAC3/MP3 CD Walkman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I normally don't review electronics, but so many people before me have knocked this great player down and I have to correct the myths.First of all, this is NOT a MP3 player.It's a CD player that plays MP3 cd's that you burn yourself.It also plays ATRAC and ATRAC+ cd's which is Sony's version of MP3 that compresses files to 1/2 the size of MP3's and retains the quality.Most of these people before this review are not well versed in MP3/CD players as evidenced by the one that thinks this is an simply a MP3 player and doesn't know how to hook it up to "get music" (why do these people bother posting and skewing the reviews is beyond my imagination).I'm reasoning that most of these people never bother to read directions and simply jump to a negative conclusion when they can't figure something out.Let's face it, technology today is complicated and learning how to read is the first step so READ THE INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!!
This is a great cd player for the money.The sound is loud and crisp (when you use the first bass setting) and I'm really picky about bass.However, buy a good pair of headphones.Sony "mega-bass" is the best.As with all players, the ear-wear is always poor quality and the player WILL sound poor no matter what.The software is so completely fool-proof that the people complaining about it probably aren't running a system that's up to date and don't understand the problems with Windows 98 or never defragmented their system.It's simple to use and runs EXACTLY like the software that came with the Intel MP3 player from a few years back.I used the ATRAC+ conversion at 64 kbps (equivalent to 128 kbps for MP3) and was able to get over 300 songs (26 cd's) at an average of 4-5 minutes each.If I used ATRAC (not the + one), I'd probably get 50 less.The sound was not compromised at all.I WAS SHOCKED!Keep in mind I have a $20 pair of headphones and I haven't listened to it in my car or home stereo (or with the cheap headphones that came with).The file compressions to ATRAC+ did take a while but only a fraction longer than regular MP3 converting. There is one problem though, when you already have a MP3 file to convert to ATRAC or ATRAC+, the software doesn't allow you to cancel and you need to control+alt+delete to abort if you change your mind.SONY should patch this problem and I intend on letting them know about it on their support page (which is very good by the way!).
The buttons are easy to use and I have no complaints except for the fact that you can't shuffle play the first track in each file you create on the CD.The player will only randomly select so you may get up to 2 tracks from the same file played after each other (a very minor issue and I never had more than 2 songs from the same file play together).The instruction manual is a little vague in some spots but I was able to easily figure things out by simply play around with it.
I wanted a player to bring to work that had all my favorites songs on one disc.I was able to achieve this with ATRAC+ technology.This way I can bring double the amount of music with me.I cannot recommend this player enough!!I usually buy small electronics made by Phillips because I've had good luck with them.This is not the first Sony cd player I own.I've not been happy with other Sony items I've bought (5 disc cd player, portable cd player a few years back and an amplifier) so I hesitated when buying.I have a SONY Vaio PC and have had no trouble with it.I also like my Sony Cybershot camera so I thought I'd give them another try.I'm glad I did!

Product Description:
Get the most from digital music with Sony's DNE510 portable CD player, which includes SonicStage CD Simple Burner software so you can take advantage of ATRAC3plus, Sony's proprietary music-compression technology when making custom MP3 CDs on a computer. The player includes Sony's popular Jog Dial control for easy folder navigation, a two-line dot-matrix display, and achieves up to 40 hours of continuous playback on two "AA" type batteries (not included).
ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps). The player comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from a PC's hard drive and burns them to a CD using ATRAC3plus compression.
Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. Bookmark playback lets you program favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button, and CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

Sony D-E350 Portable CD Player Review

Sony D-E350 Portable CD Player
Average Reviews:

I bought this amazing product about three weeks ago. I previously had a KOSS mp3 player and after a week, and not being able to return it, I threw it away. So then I decided that I did not want a complicated MP3 playback CD-Player that was prone to failure, and I purchased the D-E350 from Best Buy. I have never had a single problem with it. It has amazing sound, very very long battery life, never skips and looks great. It plays all my cd's, including CD-RW's, even badly scratched ones.
Unlike the cheaper cd-players, this one comes with Great Headphones. Not the kind you would expect bundeled with a cd-player. I have been using it for three weeks, and I have only had to change the batteries once. I just can't get over how great a player this is. I HIGHLY recommend this cd-player to EVERYONE!

GPX CDPM5004 Portable CD/MP3 Player with Anti-Skip Protection Review

GPX CDPM5004 Portable CD/MP3 Player with Anti-Skip Protection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This CD Player has almost everything you could need, Bass Boost, fourty-five second anti-skip on cds, one hundred second on MP3 (which is really cool because it actually stops moving the CD, but still plays the music [it memorizes the songs for two minutes, and then memorizes the next two almost unnoticably] during those two minutes) In the month that I've had it the only time it's skipped is when the batteries run low, and I think that the anti-skip (with the stopping of the cd) with the MP3's actually adds to battery life.

Product Description:
The GPX CDPM5004 personal CD player gives listeners access to both their CD and MP3 catalogs in an affordable, lightweight package. The device is compatible with CD, CD-R, and CD-RW formats, but also plays compressed MP3 files when loaded on a CD-R disc, making it a far more affordable alternative to Flash memory MP3 players. And as a further incentive to digital music fans, it's also quite eye-catching, with a half-moon-shaped window that reveals the spinning CD inside. Active listeners who plan to take the CD player jogging or on bumpy car trips will welcome the anti-skip protection (ASP), which stores the music data for a set time to safeguard against interruptions from jostling. The ASP runs for 120 seconds for MP3 files and 45 seconds when playing CDs.
Ultimately, however, it's the music that makes the machine, and the CDPM5004 delivers on this count, too, with a bass boost system that fills out the lower frequencies to create an impressive overall sound. Other features include 64-track programming, a two-line LCD display, random and repeat play, directory select, CD intro, song skip/search, and a low battery indicator. The device runs on two AA batteries (not included) and comeswith stereo headphones and a belt clip for portable use. It also carries a 90-day warranty on parts and labor.

Sirius SUB-X1 Universal Plug 'n' Play Boombox Review

Sirius SUB-X1 Universal Plug 'n' Play Boombox
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had intended to use the boombox at work. I originially did not know about the need for the indoor/outdoor antenna, which of course makes sense in order to receive a satelite signal, but there is NO physical way for me to get the anntenna outside and I don't have a window in my office. I even tried the boombox at home with the antenna on the windowsill, and I still couldn't get a signal. So disappointed! The boombox is a great design, light weight, and great sound (when I could get a signal for 2 sec.), but unless you have just the right place to put it or are able to put the antenna outside, you may have limited signal capability. So sad! I love my satelite radio!

COBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio Review

COBY CX-CD241 Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio

Pro:
1. Tiny
2. Tiny
3. Cute
4. Decent radio reception even with very short antenna

Con:
1. Puny sound (but it's a tiny, inexpensive stereo...)
2. IT HUMS. In radio or CD mode, there is a moderate/low pitched hummming sound that comes through the music. Even when you're not playing a CD, there's the hum. I thought it was just me, since I'm very sensitive to hums, but my wife (who doesn't care) noticed it, too, without my pointing it out.

I MAY keep this boombox because it's cheap and cute, but the hum really does irritate me.

GPX Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Line in for MP3 Devices and Remote Control (Black) Review

GPX Portable CD Player with AM/FM Radio, Line in for MP3 Devices and Remote Control

The sound quality is complete crap. There is absolutely NO bass and when you try to turn up the volume the speakers crackle and cut out. I was excited about this radio because it is mp3 ready and came with the jack to connect my mp3 player. When I connected my mp3 player I was shocked to discover that the sound quality could get even worse than it already was. I actually like the design and I guess since I will be using it in my office at low volume it will serve its purpose, but I still wish I wouldnt have wasted what little money this costs.
