JVC XL-FZ258BK 5-CD Changer Review

JVC XL-FZ258BK 5-CD Changer
Average Reviews:

This is a great buy at twice the price. There are two features I would have liked but not major ones.Let me say first of all, I am a part time DJ and I cannot tie up all my CDs in a large 100 or 200 CD carousel.Ineed easy access to load and play lots of new music to build play lists. If you never remove your CDs then I would consider a different player.Ifyou carry your music back and forth to the car or work (or DJ like I do)and want to only load a few CDs for an evening then this is the best I'veseen.First, the good features; a 5 CD drawer that can be opened withoutstopping play, good display, easy to use remote, easy to use front buttons,a power cable that detaches from the back (a BIG help in a crowded cabinetlike mine), optical digital connection, headphone jack w/volume control. Now, the bad features; there seems to be no way to display the time for acut other than the elapsed time.I am slightly disappointed in thisobvious feature I have seen on every CD player in the last 10 years or so. A minor irritant to me, you might not miss it.The other feature is theoptical digital.I would have liked a coax digital as my Kenwood VR-309receiver only has one optical port and that is used by my JVC XV-511 DVD. Other components in my system for sound, 3 x Dual 5" Vifa speakers w/ Aldome tweeters from Speaker City in Glendale, CA, with 2 x Optimus 5 fromRadio Shack for surrounds. The sound of this setup is superb. This unitis a great replacement for my Kenwood DP-R3080 CD.

Product Description:
Although it's a budget model, the JVC XL-FZ258BK five-disc carousel player still satisfies many requirements for ergonomic operation and quality sound reproduction. JVC equips the XL-FZ258BK with play exchange, which lets you change any four discs while one is playing. An optical digital output lets you record direct to CD-R or minidisc for pure digital copies and also facilitates integration with a surround receiver and home theater.
JVC has long been recognized for its dedication to high sound quality. Accordingly, this player offers JVC's exclusive P.E.M. D.D. (Pulse Edge Modulation Differential-Linearity-Errorless) digital-to-analog (D/A) converter, touted by many as one of the most accurate and "musical" one-bit D/As available. The converter is designed to render all the delicacy and subtlety of recorded music, and an 8x oversampling digital filter lends a helping hand.
Conveniences include continuous play and smart random play, five individual disc-select keys on the front panel, and a remote control with 10-key pad for direct disc and track access. The XL-FZ258BK also offers a 20-track program chart, resume functionality (letting you pick up where you left off before you turned off the player), program play (up to 32 tracks and/or discs), and four-way repeat (which lets you repeat all tracks, a single track, programmed tracks, and random-play options).
JVC has thoughtfully provided an independent volume control for the player's headphone jack, and the unit comes with a disc-stabilizing clamper to reduce potentially sound-degrading internal vibrations.
JVC's enhanced Compu Link control system uses intuitive technology to foster communication between various JVC components. This unit comes with a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System 1000W RMS Total Power (Silver) Review

Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System 1000W RMS Total Power
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I took time to go to several stores to try different systems. With each system no matter how innovative or divers the system with the latest capabilities, the only thing that made any difference that was noticeable in the store was the number of watts to the speaker. I tried positions and that was pretty much negligible. So now my mission was to find a mini-stereo that would be a shelf system to replace my poor old 25 year old system that finally bit the dust.

I actually tried the Sony LBTZX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System and found it pretty good. Then I spotted on line the Sony LBTZUX9 Mini Hi-Fi Shelf System. 1000 watts meant 250 watts per-speaker. I do not want rock sounds that will breing every fire engine for the surrounding neighborhood. I did not want a system that you have to ware sunscreen to listen to Prokofiev on a cool evening while reading. So I took a chance and ordered this monster. I was aware that it came in a shipping box that would require a team to deliver; how ever I thought it was just well packed. Expecting a mini-stereo, a shelf system I did not expect just one speaker to be larger than the whole of my older stereo system.Naturally I realize that this animal was never going to fit on a shelf (book shelf) as it has twice the depth and would tip out. The tape-to-tape system opens up on the top instead of the front which again makes it impossible to place on a book self. I am also starting to question the term "Mini".

I was able to retrieve Cargo cases from another room to replace the book shelves. It took five of these animals (one for the stereo and one each for the huge speakers.) there are two remotes because there is not enough room on one remote to hold all the buttons. The speakers were simple to setup. Everything works fine out of the box. However this system may be tad overkill. But the purpose is not for great volumes as great ranges to hear the subtle sounds that you can only get in a concert hall. Many of the time I have to pick the "flat" option to keep the boom box effect to overwhelm the music.

Well with its new home and a little adjustment this is the system to take me into the next couple of decades before the technology will make it obsolete.

Panasonic SC-HC40 Compact Stereo System Review

Panasonic SC-HC40 Compact Stereo System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For a CD player with decent sound with an iPod dock for a small to medium sized room, this piece will work. I really like the size of it (very compact, smaller than I thought it would be) and the design of it. It's very sleek and looks great in our living room. The remote control is also better than I would expect for a system of this size. And, considering how strangely difficult it is to find a CD player with an iPod dock at a reasonable price, I'm glad I have this.

I only dock it down a few stars because of the sound. The sound is average. Despite some minimum controls like bass and treble, the unit just doesn't produce a crisp, sharp sound. It can definitely fill a room, which is great, but for true audiophiles and stereo-quality sound, I'd advise to look elsewhere (and probably at a higher priced unit). My wife loves it and thinks it's great. I, however, can tell the sacrifice in sound quality. It's not bad by any means, just a few notches below the best out there.

It's also more difficult than it should be putting in and taking out CDs.

For us, in its particular room, function (size and design) wins out a bit over quality. When I buy a bigger home with multiple rooms, I'll upgrade to a more traditional stereo system.

Hello Kitty AM/FM CD Boombox - KT2028H Review

Hello Kitty AM/FM CD Boombox - KT2028H

We were excited to find this Hello Kitty boom box for our three year old.She loves books on tape and CD from the library. The player was very easy for her to use and had great sound quality. The first one we had lasted only days before the buttons wouldn't work.We exchanged it and the second one is now having the same problems after only a year of use.I feel it was not abused as she only was allowed to use it while we were supervising so that the library materials were not damaged. It just seems to be a poorly made radio. We are disappointed and searching for a better option.

Coby CXCD400BLK Micro Shelf System (Black) Review

Coby CXCD400BLK Micro Shelf System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Coby CXCD400BLK is an inexpensive unit that will play CD, AM/FMradio, and audio cassette tapes. It also will record CD or radio to audio cassette. I bought it for recording CD to audio cassette because my car has a cassette player but not a CD player. Playback sound from CD and radio are good.

Unfortunately, playback from audio cassettes recorded from CD have far too much background noise, making them difficult to listen to. I asked the manufacturer if this was typical, hoping to ask for a replacement, but they have not responded.

Recording a CD to audio cassette is a bit tricky, as the cassette does not auto-reverse in record mode. This means you have to either listen while recording and stop the CD when you get to the end of the tape, or record all the way through, then come back and see where the tape stopped, flip the tape, find the same spot on the CD, and continue recording.

I had hoped it would have high-speed copying, but was not surprised that it doesn't at this price.

Bottom line: If you want an inexpensive boom box to play your old audio cassettes it's not a bad deal, though it is more a bookshelf system than a portable. But if you want to make good quality recordings on audio cassettes, look elsewhere.

Sharp CD-DH790N - Mini system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 / cassette / USB flash player Review

Sharp CD-DH790N - Mini system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 / cassette / USB flash player
Average Reviews:

This unit replaced a Coby unit that took a hit during a thunderstorm. I looked at several different units. One of the features I needed was a cassette as I still have many of them and of course a CD player. Based on reviews of the other brands I chose this one even though there were not reviews at the time. The other unit that was considered was the Sony. The reviews said that the power / sound was on the light side so I took a chance on this one and I am very glad I did.I like everything about it. Simple and useful features, great remote, exceptional sound quality and plenty of power. I am an old rock'n roller and am pretty particular when it's comes to my sound quality and "loudness". Everything from Jimi Hendrix, the Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones, the Who to Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Pink Floyd, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Pink Floyd, AC/DC and even Hawkwind all sounded good. The bass is particularly good and there is not a hint of that "treblely sound" we have all experienced over the years. In my opinion, in the area that I am using it in, the 300 watt unit might be overkill, but had I to do it over again, for $30 more I may have purchased the 300 watt unit. At the time, I was just looking to replace my Coby which was around $50.00. That just depends on how loud you like and how much "air space" you need to fill. The owner's manual is well organized and written with diagrams and illustrations. One of the neat features is you can use a USB mass storage device. I can copy my entire music library to a 32GB USB memory stick I have and not have to play the CDs. I would purchase this unit again and again...

Magnasonic MAG-MDVD500 Portable CD/DVD Player Boombox with 7' Widescreen LCD, AM/FM Radio, & MP3/WMA/MPEG4 Playback

I'm shocked. Unlike other portable DVD players I've read about, this one played both my home recorded, and 'store-boughten' DVD's very well.I thought at first it was DOA, but then I found I had to push-in the AC cord pretty firmly into the unit's socket to get a connection. After that, it powered-up Ok. The volume control 'could' be made to go higher on some of my DVDs, but for most DVD's, it's fine just as it is. By the way, the manual doesn't mention this, but there is a 'nearly hidden' On/Off switch on the back of the unit to turn On/Off the 'Display'...so be advised, in case nothing shows on the screen. Also, I had to 'tilt' the unit at a downward angle to get lower 'contrast'...which gave a brighter picture...but I think I read in the manual, somewhere, that there is a 'tilt-screen' control...or maybe not.) Now, as for the use of this unit under alkaline battery-power: I loaded 8 alkaline C-Cells under optimal conditions: They were just bought at a big box store which has high product turnover...so they weren't very long on the shelf; I never 'stored' them for any length of time (or used them in any other device); I inserted them in the player within 2 days of having purchased them; and they were (alkaline) Duracell's which, hands down, are the 'best' quality in my opinion. Over a 2-evening test, with a break after 4 hours of DVD's the first night and then continuing the test the next night, the batteries lasted almost exactly a total of 6 hours of playtime. That's not too bad. I know now that I can watch about 3 DVDs on one set of 8 c-cells...given the optimal conditions I described above. If the battery conditions are not optimal (such as being stored for 9 months before being used, etc.), I'd expect less than 6 hours of playtime. Also, I used the default factory settings for the screen brightness and contrast. As I understand it, if you make the screen dimmer, the batteries last longer (as was told to me by a different manufacturer.) By the way, an 'AA' battery DVD player that used to be on the market required 6 AA batteries to get 2.25 hours of playtime. So, that will give you a basis for comparison. I hope all this helps. It really IS a good unit in my overall estimation. (I just wish it would take 8 'D'-cell batteries, instead of 'C'-cells...which would likely have given it considerably longer playtime.) And I just don't know anything about long-term durability. (Follow-up: I went to the manufacturer?/distributor? website as printed in my package/box inserts, and this is what occurred: 1) The player being reviewed is no longer being shown as a current product (i.e. it's just not 'shown' at all). I'll let you decide how to use that information. 2) I emailed their tech support department to ask what kind of battery was used in the remote control of the model I purchased, and after 3 days, I haven't received any reply. Again, I'll let you decide how to use that information.]
