I'm shocked. Unlike other portable DVD players I've read about, this one played both my home recorded, and 'store-boughten' DVD's very well.I thought at first it was DOA, but then I found I had to push-in the AC cord pretty firmly into the unit's socket to get a connection. After that, it powered-up Ok. The volume control 'could' be made to go higher on some of my DVDs, but for most DVD's, it's fine just as it is. By the way, the manual doesn't mention this, but there is a 'nearly hidden' On/Off switch on the back of the unit to turn On/Off the 'Display'...so be advised, in case nothing shows on the screen. Also, I had to 'tilt' the unit at a downward angle to get lower 'contrast'...which gave a brighter picture...but I think I read in the manual, somewhere, that there is a 'tilt-screen' control...or maybe not.) Now, as for the use of this unit under alkaline battery-power: I loaded 8 alkaline C-Cells under optimal conditions: They were just bought at a big box store which has high product turnover...so they weren't very long on the shelf; I never 'stored' them for any length of time (or used them in any other device); I inserted them in the player within 2 days of having purchased them; and they were (alkaline) Duracell's which, hands down, are the 'best' quality in my opinion. Over a 2-evening test, with a break after 4 hours of DVD's the first night and then continuing the test the next night, the batteries lasted almost exactly a total of 6 hours of playtime. That's not too bad. I know now that I can watch about 3 DVDs on one set of 8 c-cells...given the optimal conditions I described above. If the battery conditions are not optimal (such as being stored for 9 months before being used, etc.), I'd expect less than 6 hours of playtime. Also, I used the default factory settings for the screen brightness and contrast. As I understand it, if you make the screen dimmer, the batteries last longer (as was told to me by a different manufacturer.) By the way, an 'AA' battery DVD player that used to be on the market required 6 AA batteries to get 2.25 hours of playtime. So, that will give you a basis for comparison. I hope all this helps. It really IS a good unit in my overall estimation. (I just wish it would take 8 'D'-cell batteries, instead of 'C'-cells...which would likely have given it considerably longer playtime.) And I just don't know anything about long-term durability. (Follow-up: I went to the manufacturer?/distributor? website as printed in my package/box inserts, and this is what occurred: 1) The player being reviewed is no longer being shown as a current product (i.e. it's just not 'shown' at all). I'll let you decide how to use that information. 2) I emailed their tech support department to ask what kind of battery was used in the remote control of the model I purchased, and after 3 days, I haven't received any reply. Again, I'll let you decide how to use that information.]

Insignia - CD Boombox with AM/FM Tuner - Black Review

Insignia - CD Boombox with AM/FM Tuner - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll just list the pros and cons since this is a pretty basic radio:

Pros:

1. It's small and easily portable.
2. Cute.
3. Doesn't take much to figure out how to use it once you get used to it.
4. Blue light is pretty and makes a nice night light.
5. Sounds better than I thought would.
6. A good deal. I didn't spend much on this CD radio at all.

Cons:

1. Claims that there is a headphone jack, but I never found one.
2. The blue light might annoy people who play their radios while trying to sleep.
3. I did have a hard time getting it to work at first, but that could be chalked up to simply not being used to a new radio.
4. Don't expect the best. This is an inexpensive radio, so you get what you pay for.

Overall, this a small, basic CD radio that's useful for those who need a new one.I just it had a headphone jack.

Looks like old school, but not old school. The sound is ok, but not that good for the price, and shipping cost. Also, it takes 10 D batteries, and it wouldn't play with them.I had a similar boombox in the 80's, it had great sound. One would think with the advancement of technology, we could still get that great sound. This is a large box with wasted space!Don't buy it, unless you enjoy being disappointed!

I ended up having a lot of trouble with skipping when using this boombox, especially when using burnt CDs.It also lacks a lot of features such as bass boost or a programmable play sequence. The sound is mediocre, but adequate.I'd recommend spending an extra $10-$20 and getting a better model.

Memorex Portable CD Boombox Review

Memorex Portable CD Boombox
Average Reviews:

I have this same boombox but mine is more black (model MP8806)

I bought this from Walmart and I was looking for an affordable boombox to listen to some audio book cds while working.Well this was affordable but the quality is not good.

For one thing there is no headphone jack for my daughter to listen to her disney cds quietly, I thought all boomboxes had headphone jacks??I had one on my old one 20 years ago!

The sound quality is very muffled and hollow sounding. NOT GOOD!

I would not recommended this.Keep looking for a better deal or just pay the extra money for one with a 5 star rating. That's why I'm on Amazon right now.

Sony Boombox with CD Player, AM/FM Radio, and iPod Dock (White) Review

Sony Boombox with CD Player, AM/FM Radio, and iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a neat boombox.I use it when I am cooking or just relaxing.I have only used it indoors (where it sounds great), but I think it is good (though not the best) for outdoors as well.

I had modest expectations when I purchased this and it has worked very well for me.I use an ipod touch in the docking station at it works great. There is no way to navigate ipod menu's (such as artist, songs, and playlist) on the boombox itself, but I use the touch interface on my ipod and it works fine.Of course, the play, pause, and forward/backward skip buttons on the boombox can be used with the ipod (for example, after you choose your favorite artist, playlist, etc on your ipod unit then you can hit play on the boombox and the song will play).

The cd player works great even with heavily used or slightly scratched cds and also plays cdr or cdrw burnt cds. The radio gets great reception.Although you won't be able to throw a window shattering party with this one, I think it is a good buy for most people.

Sony CFD-S05 CD Radio Cassette Recorder (Silver) Review

Sony CFD-S05 CD Radio Cassette Recorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Yes, it's a corny title, I know; what's not corny is this sweet little boombox from Sony. It was little difficult to find a unit like this with all of the features I was in the market for, since boomboxes seem to be on the way out -- at least in their old configurations.

Pretty much gone are days of tape, but I guess that there are some folks out there who still like cassettes; these are the people who will be happy with the CFDS05's built-in tape deck - I will probably never use it. The other features, such as digital AM/FM tuner with numerous presets, CD-R/RW capable compact-disc player, and AUX-in jack for portable music players, are just what I was looking for!

+ The sound, while not audiophile quality, is pleasantly full and crisp; the longstanding Sony Mega Bass feature helps the lower end a little, but don't expect miracles. All in all, it's a very nice sound from a not-too-huge footprint.

+ The digital tuner works well, picking up the new somewhat-hard-to-lock-onto local public music radio station with no difficulties at all. The presets take a little practice -- I actually had to break down and look at the instructions.

+ The CD player seems to have no problems reading my CD-R discs (I always play copies, never original discs); my previous RCA stereo clock radio would conk out in the middle of a CD-R playback.

+ The aux-in feature also works very well with my MP3 player, though it's necessary to crank the volume up a bit in relation to the radio or CD player - don't forget to turn it back down before switching sources!

- About the only minus I can come up with, and it's a minor one, is a lack of some "snazzy" features; there's no remote, no "sleep" feature, and the CD doesn't play back mp3 discs. I'm sure Sony could have included some of these features, but likely not at this price point.

The CFDS05's construction is pretty solid, though perhaps not quite as heavy-duty as the three other Sony boomboxes we own (that are all 3-6 years old, and we haven't had a lick of trouble from any of them). I am hopeful this one will be just as reliable as its predecessors.

Overall, I would say that if you're in the market for what I think is becoming a scarce product offering, pick one of these up while you can! I am very pleased that I found yet another quality Sony boombox to meet my listening needs - I've tried many, many others, and I always end up coming back to Sony.
